Dispatch Emerges from Stealth with $500,000 to Build Uncrewed In-Space Manufacturing Stations

By Zero G Talent•

Dispatch has emerged from stealth with $500,000 in backing to develop orbital factories serviced by refurbishable reentry vehicles. Backed by Y Combinator, the San Francisco startup aims to build uncrewed, high-power space stations designed specifically for "lights-out" manufacturing of high-value goods like semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, bypassing the costs and complexities of human-rated space stations.

Hardware development is already underway. Dispatch recently conducted tests in the Mojave Desert on a full-scale heat shield designed to withstand Mach 20+ atmospheric reentry by positioning the shield directly behind a rocket engine. The milestone supports the company's roadmap to conduct a 2027 flight test of a subscale reentry vehicle holding a 30-kilogram payload capacity, ahead of launching a 100-kilowatt uncrewed orbital station by late 2029.

Uncrewed Orbital Factories and Reentry Cargo

In-space manufacturing offers unique physical conditions for developing advanced biotech compounds and semiconductor crystals, but access has historically been bottlenecked by the dual challenges of staying in orbit long enough to manufacture products and finding cost-effective ways to return cargo to Earth.

Dispatch splits these requirements into two systems: permanently anchored orbital platforms and dedicated cargo return capsules. "The whole premise is: if you’re going to be manufacturing in space at scale, why launch the factory every single time? Just have delivery trucks take things there and back," CEO Payton Case told Payload Space.

Rather than flying crew-compatible infrastructure, Dispatch designs its stations strictly for automated production. Operating uncrewed removes the mass, power, and safety burdens associated with environmental control, life support, and escape pods. The planned 100-kilowatt orbital platform will supply power and thermal cooling to 300-kilogram capacity return vehicles, which will dock with the station to run manufacturing operations before returning finished goods to Earth.

Leadership from Astranis

Dispatch was founded in 2025 by Payton Case and Andrew Mello, both former engineers at satellite manufacturer Astranis. Case previously worked within the office of the CTO at Astranis, directing spacecraft architecture, production, and mission operations.

The founders have focused on lowering capital costs through in-house component fabrication and rapid prototyping. Dispatch fabricated its first reentry heat shield in an apartment, validating the thermal protection system at a fraction of standard aerospace development budgets before taking it to Mojave for engine blast testing.

Hardware Engineering Hiring in San Francisco

Dispatch operates out of San Francisco, California, and lists seven open positions across thermal, mechanical, electrical, and avionics engineering disciplines.

Hardware design for atmospheric reentry requires intensive modeling of extreme convective and radiative heating. To expand its vehicle engineering group, the company is recruiting an Aerothermal Engineer to analyze Mach 20+ trajectories, a full-time Thermal Engineer, and a Mechanical Engineer. Full-time engineering roles offer base salaries ranging between $100,000 and $170,000 per year.

The startup is also bringing on early-career engineering talent to work directly on spacecraft components, offering four intern positions paid at $30 per hour. These include a GNC Engineering Intern focused on guidance, navigation, and control systems, as well as interns across mechanical, electrical, and thermal tracks. All open roles require onsite work in San Francisco.
