Luminai Lands Cleveland Clinic Deployment and $38 Million to Automate Healthcare Workflows
Luminai has secured an enterprise-wide deployment with Cleveland Clinic and raised $38 million in Series B funding to scale its workflow automation technology across health systems.
The 31-person startup, originally backed by Y Combinator in the S20 batch, builds software to remove manual data entry and multi-step coordination from core operations. While Luminai initially targeted administrative processes across finance, telecommunications, and healthcare, its recent operational focus centers on large hospital systems, where incoming documentation often arrives via legacy channels like fax machines.
The $38 million Series B was led by Peak XV Partners, with participation from Define Ventures, General Catalyst, Scribble Ventures, and Y Combinator, as reported by citybiz. The round brought Luminai's total equity funding to $60 million. Individual backers include Bob McGrew, Kevin Weil, Arash Ferdowsi, Katie Stanton, and executives from Flexport, Notion, Front, Ramp, and Twitch.
Automating the Healthcare Coordination Layer
Administrative tasks consume up to 25% of total healthcare spending, operating largely as a manual coordination layer between fragmented software systems. Luminai tackles this by pairing healthcare-trained AI models with a workflow execution engine and human-in-the-loop review.
The system ingests unstructured inputs, reads the clinical context, and executes transactions directly within electronic medical records (EMRs). When edge cases emerge, the software routes the full context to human staff, then incorporates the resolution back into the system to refine future executions. Luminai supports multiple deployment models, including on-premises, customer-managed cloud, and managed infrastructure. The core technical stack relies on Python and TypeScript.
The Cleveland Clinic deployment illustrates how the technology operates at scale, as detailed by the Cleveland Clinic Newsroom. The health system, which manages 15.9 million outpatient encounters and 343,000 hospital admissions annually, is using Luminai to handle external patient referrals. Incoming faxes and documents are read, matched to patient records and order types, and transcribed directly into the EMR for follow-up.
"Automation only delivers value when it reflects the realities of clinical and operational work," said Rohit Chandra, Chief Digital Officer at Cleveland Clinic.
According to coverage from Case Western Reserve University, the initial referral automation forms the baseline for expanding into other hospital workflows characterized by heavy documentation and repeated hand-offs.
Leadership and Origins
Luminai was co-founded by CEO Kesava Kirupa Dinakaran and Dmitry Dolgopolov, who previously operated the company under the name DigitalBrain. Dima Dolgopolov also serves as a co-founder. Dinakaran previously lived off hackathon winnings in Silicon Valley and holds two world records for solving Rubik's cubes.
"Healthcare organizations have an opportunity to use AI to modernize and transform operations while still relying on their existing systems of record," Dinakaran told the Cleveland Clinic Newsroom. He noted that operational expenses inside health systems concentrate in roughly a dozen large work streams that eat up administrative capacity.
The team has assembled technical and operational staff from Palantir, Cruise, Google, Coinbase, Brex, Epic, and Banner Health, according to citybiz.
Forward Deployment and Hiring Demands
Rather than shipping off-the-shelf software, Luminai embeds forward-deployed engineers directly inside client operations to tailor workflows alongside clinical staff. To support new enterprise customers, the company has opened 11 roles split across engineering, operations, and go-to-market functions.
Engineering positions show an emphasis on customer-facing technical leads and backend infrastructure. The team is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer - Team Lead ($190,000–$270,000) in New York or San Francisco, as well as a hybrid Senior Software Engineer, Applied AI ($170,000–$250,000) open to remote applicants.
To manage commercial growth, Luminai is also recruiting an Executive Director, Enterprise Partnerships Lead ($300,000–$400,000) in San Mateo, alongside operations, marketing, and design talent. Most positions are based out of San Mateo, San Francisco, or New York, with select engineering roles offering hybrid flexibility.
