Convex Raises $57 Million Series B as AI Coding Agents Reshape Backend Infrastructure
In August 2026, Convex closed a $57 million Series B funding round led by Insight Partners, with participation from Etna Labs alongside existing backers Andreessen Horowitz and Spark Capital. The financing brought the company's total equity funding to $110.5 million, as reported by Pulse 2.0 and citybiz.
Convex is allocating the capital toward core platform engineering, tooling for agentic development, and hiring across technical and go-to-market teams at its San Francisco headquarters.
What Convex Builds
Founded in 2021, Convex develops an open-source reactive database and unified backend platform designed for web developers. Instead of cobbling together standalone databases, cache layers, message queues, workflow schedulers, and file buckets with glue code, developers run their entire backend using TypeScript and JavaScript functions.
The architecture binds application state directly to client interfaces through real-time subscriptions, backed by default ACID transactions and end-to-end type safety. Convex also integrates file storage, server functions, scheduled tasks, and search capabilities.
The company has increasingly geared its platform toward code produced by autonomous AI systems. Convex stated that in its internal evaluations, 90% of AI-built applications that relied on traditional databases experienced silent data corruption in production, while applications configured on Convex recorded no failures under the same conditions.
"Agents reach for the first thing that works, and on most backends the first thing that works is subtly, silently wrong. You’ll find out weeks later, in production," co-founder and CEO Jamie Turner told Pulse 2.0. "Convex is that discipline packaged as a product: the correct thing and the easy thing are the same thing."
Platform usage has grown to nearly 2 million applications built by roughly 500,000 developers, generating more than 1.2 million weekly npm downloads. Teams using Convex include OpenAI, Tripadvisor, Solana, Zapier, and Reducto. The infrastructure is SOC 2 Type II certified and HIPAA compliant, according to FinSMEs.
Technical Leadership Rooted in Distributed Systems
Convex’s core team was formed by engineering leaders who spent years architecting storage and synchronization systems at Dropbox:
- Jamie Turner, Co-Founder and CEO: Turner holds a degree in computer science and English from the University of California, Los Angeles. Before co-founding Convex, he served as Senior Director of Engineering at Dropbox, where he managed business platforms, database systems, and storage groups serving hundreds of millions of users. Earlier, Turner was head of engineering at Bump, which Google acquired in 2013.
- James Cowling, Co-Founder and CTO: Cowling earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering and an MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, after completing his undergraduate degree in computer science at the University of Sydney. He spent eight years at Dropbox from 2012 to 2020 as a Senior Principal Engineer designing distributed file and block storage.
- Sujay Jayakar, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist: Jayakar graduated from Cornell University with a BA in math and economics. At Dropbox, he worked from 2012 to 2020 as a Principal Engineer and served as tech lead on Nucleus, a rewrite of Dropbox's file synchronization engine. As reported by TechRound, Jayakar also worked at Microsoft Research on high-throughput networking.
Expanding Systems Engineering and GTM in San Francisco
Convex operates with 32 employees and has listed 12 open positions, all based in San Francisco under hybrid or onsite arrangements.
The hiring distribution indicates two simultaneous operational priorities: scaling the low-level systems that handle distributed consensus and synchronization, and building out a structured go-to-market engine to capture enterprise adoption.
On the infrastructure side, the company is adding systems depth through openings for an Engineering Manager, Infra/Systems, a Senior Software Engineer, Infra/Systems, and a Software Engineer, Infra/Systems. To support agent-driven workflows and developer APIs, Convex is also hiring a Software Engineer, AI and a Software Engineer, API Platform.
To accelerate adoption among software teams, Convex is filling leadership and commercial positions including Head of Marketing, Head of Developer Experience, and Creative Director / Head of Design.
