Kombo Prepares to Double Headcount With Transatlantic GTM and Engineering Push
Kombo is expanding its operations in Berlin and New York, listing 16 open positions for a team that currently numbers 20 employees. The Series A startup, which went through Y Combinator’s S22 batch, has raised $35.4 million in total funding backed by investors including Volition Capital, 468 Capital, Acadian Ventures, and Robin Capital.
The current hiring push marks a dual expansion: building out go-to-market teams in the United States while scaling core backend and customer-facing engineering at its Berlin headquarters.
Standardizing Data Across Legacy HR and Payroll Systems
Founded in 2022, Kombo builds a unified API that connects customer applications to human resources, payroll, and applicant tracking software. The company positions its platform as an integration layer between software vendors and third-party systems that range from modern SaaS tools to legacy enterprise setups.
Instead of clients independently building and maintaining individual integrations, Kombo provisions a single abstraction layer. Its backend conducts a full read of connected tools every few hours, managing downtime and reconciling irregular schemas from legacy databases that house hundreds of thousands of records.
The company reports that it scaled from zero revenue to more than $1 million in annual recurring revenue within its first year. Its client base spans early-stage startups to Fortune 500 companies seeking to compress multi-month integration timelines into a few days.
On the technical side, Kombo runs on Google Cloud Platform using Cloud Run, Kubernetes, BigQuery, and Postgres Cloud SQL. The application tier uses Node.js and TypeScript, supported by Express, Zod, tRPC, and Prisma, with React and TypeScript on the frontend. The team manages observability with OpenTelemetry and Honeycomb, maintaining infrastructure through Terraform, GitHub, and GitHub Actions.
The Leadership Team
Kombo was founded by four operators with engineering and product backgrounds across Europe and the United States:
- Aike Hillbrands, Co-Founder and CTO, directs the technical infrastructure from Germany.
- Alexander Kübel, Co-Founder, is based in the United States.
- Fabian Rothfuß, Co-Founder, holds a BS in Computer Software Engineering from CODE University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.
- Niklas Higi, Platform Lead, Co-Founder, and Advisor, previously served as the company's CTO. Higi also earned a BS in Software Engineering from CODE University of Applied Sciences.
Go-to-Market Expansion and Technical Hiring
Of the 16 open positions, the hiring split shows a targeted effort to capture US commercial enterprise accounts while keeping product and platform development anchored in Germany.
The company is establishing a direct sales footprint in Manhattan. Open commercial roles include an Enterprise Account Executive (US) paying between $240,000 and $300,000, an onsite Account Executive (NYC) budgeted at $240,000 to $280,000, and a Pre-Sales Engineer offering $180,000 to $220,000. Kombo is also hiring business development representatives and field marketers in New York to build its pipeline.
The engineering organization is adding senior talent to support platform load. Kombo is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer (Platform Team) and a Senior Product Engineer (Full Stack), alongside solutions and developer support engineers to assist clients with API implementations. With the exception of one hybrid sales role, Kombo requires employees to work on site in its Berlin or New York offices.
