Veryfi Expands Fraud Detection and Latin America Operations to Scale Document AI

By Zero G Talent•

Veryfi, Inc. is scaling its document processing platform, adding engineering and account management roles across the United States and Latin America. The San Mateo, California-based company, founded in 2017 out of Y Combinator’s W17 batch, builds APIs and SDKs that extract structured data from unstructured business documents like receipts, invoices, checks, shipping labels, and W-2 forms.

Now operating at Series B+ with approximately 70 employees, the company is building specialized capabilities like automated fraud detection while expanding customer operations for consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands. Backed by NewView Capital, Act One Ventures, Transpose Platform Management, and Zillionize, Veryfi previously raised $12 million to automate document data extraction, as reported by Forbes.

The Data Extraction Engine

Veryfi positions its software around the slogan "Document AI. One API Call." The platform targets financial services, enterprise software, loyalty programs, and retail technology providers that need to turn images and PDFs of documents into machine-readable records in seconds.

The company's software stack combines native mobile client libraries with a Python backend:

  • Mobile SDKs: Swift and Objective-C for iOS, Kotlin for Android.
  • Backend and Models: Python 3, TensorFlow for optical and machine learning models, Django for core APIs, and Flask for web hubs.
  • Infrastructure: Amazon Aurora databases hosted on AWS, with automated deployments spanning four geographic regions.

A core focus for the technical team is keeping data extraction fast and accurate without human-in-the-loop validation during processing.

Leadership from AdTech and HealthTech Infrastructure

Veryfi was co-founded by two engineers who worked together at Coupons, Inc. (later Quotient Technology) through its growth from an early-stage startup to an initial public offering:

  • Dmitry Birulia, co-founder, holds an M.S. in Computer Science from Belarusian State University. He moved to the United States from Belarus in 2009 and spent six years at Coupons, Inc., where he managed three engineering teams before co-founding Veryfi to build data extraction infrastructure.
  • Ernest Semerda, co-founder, studied computer science at the University of Western Sydney and attended the Australian Graduate School of Management. Prior to Veryfi, he served as CTO of Couponstar, ran international engineering at Coupons, Inc., and co-founded VectorCare (originally Medlert), a patient logistics and dispatch platform used by healthcare networks including Kaiser and Sutter Health.

Both founders bring backgrounds in building high-throughput consumer and logistics software, which now shapes Veryfi's emphasis on low-latency API architecture.

Expanding Fraud Detection and Regional Support

Veryfi's current 14 open roles show two clear priorities: deepening the platform's core AI algorithms in California and building a cross-border client operations team in Latin America.

At its San Mateo headquarters, the company is recruiting specialized machine learning engineers to address document tampering and validation. Open roles like the onsite Data Scientist - Fraud Detection ($160,000–$210,000) and Sr. Machine Learning Engineer ($100,000–$160,000) focus directly on evaluating document authenticity. Supporting this infrastructure are openings for a Full-Stack Software Engineer ($120,000–$160,000) and a Senior Python Engineer ($90,000–$130,000).

Simultaneously, Veryfi is expanding operations across Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico. These hires support consumer goods accounts and international data pipelines, led by hybrid positions such as the Node.js Developer/ Technical Account Manager for CPG brands in LATAM ($24,000–$45,000) and the Medellín-based Data Annotation Engineer ($35,000–$40,000).

Commercial roles in the United States include an onsite Sales Engineer ($90,000–$110,000) and an Account Manager - Growth Accounts ($150,000–$183,000) targeting existing enterprise deployments.
