We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we’re developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin’s mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.
Software Development Engineer III – Front-End (AI-Powered UI Platform)
About the Role:
We're a team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers relentlessly committed to a culture of safety and innovation. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and requires your dedication and keen attention to ensure safe and repeatable spaceflight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space, fulfilling Blue Origin's vision of millions living and working in space to benefit Earth.
As part of our Enterprise Technology (ET) team, you will help build the digital infrastructure essential for building the road to space. This is a platform engineering role—you'll be building the thing that builds the thing.
Join our team as an SDE III Front-End Engineer building an AI-powered UI platform that connects enterprise data to user-defined, composable UIs. In this role, you will own critical subsystems of our front-end architecture, delivering declarative UI workflows, AI code-generation guardrails, and design system tooling that accelerates development across all of Blue Origin's engineering programs.
What You'll Work With
- React & React Native
- TypeScript
- GraphQL & REST APIs
- Domain-Specific Languages (DSL) & AST tooling
- AI/LLM integration & code-generation workflows
- Reusable Design Systems & Component Libraries
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Platform Ownership
- Own one or more core subsystems within the AI UI platform, driving the technical design, delivery, and roadmap of improvements with general guidance.
- Practice disciplined technical design for your systems, evaluating near- and long-term objectives, and balancing technical debt against feature delivery.
- Define implementation details for project work: break down complex platform requirements into concrete engineering tasks and provide reliable complexity/schedule estimates.
- Build and maintain core platform capabilities that translate DSL configurations and AI prompts into production-grade React and React Native components.
Design System & Front-End Engineering
- Partner with design system teams and downstream product engineers to implement composable component primitives, contract enforcement, and automated validation.
- Implement parsers, validators, and AST-based code-generation routines to ensure generated UIs conform strictly to Blue Origin design, security, and accessibility standards.
- Encourage the adoption of modern front-end industry best practices, new web technologies, and scalable UI architectures across the team.
Operational Excellence & System Health
- Own and author technical documentation, runbooks, interface specifications, and architectural design docs for your systems.
- Lead root cause analyses (RCA) and corrective actions for major-scope technical issues and non-conformances within your platform domain.
- Identify underlying causes of endemic problems across front-end systems, developing developer tooling and automated tests (unit, integration, E2E) to drive operational excellence.
- Contribute to telemetry and metrics to assess, measure, and validate the impact of platform features.
Collaboration & Guidance
- Serve as a core contributor and subject matter expert (SME) for your assigned systems, working with team leads and senior SMEs to validate designs.
- Partner with Product Managers and internal customer teams to understand pain points, clarify use cases, validate requirements, and iterate on delivered capabilities.
- Provide technical guidance to more junior engineers by answering technical questions, sharing team best practices, and delivering high-quality feedback in code reviews.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software development experience shipping production-grade web applications.
- Strong technical expertise in modern JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript.
- Deep hands-on experience with React (component lifecycle, hooks, state management patterns, and performance tuning).
- Experience with GraphQL (query/mutation design, schema consumption, caching) and REST APIs.
- Demonstrated experience owning the technical design and end-to-end delivery of a system, library, or core project feature.
- Proven experience building reusable UI component libraries, developer tools, or shared front-end platform modules.
- Solid understanding of responsive layout patterns, cross-browser compatibility, and web accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA).
- Strong track record of practicing operational excellence: root-cause analysis, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and code reviews.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with or strong interest in React Native (cross-platform web and mobile architectures).
- Familiarity with Generative AI / LLM APIs, prompt orchestration, or AI-assisted development tools.
- Exposure to compilers, Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs), Babel/SWC plugins, or Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs).
- Deep understanding of front-end build tooling, monorepo tooling, and bundlers (e.g., Vite, Webpack, Turborepo).
- Familiarity with backend runtime environments (Node.js) and AWS cloud infrastructure.
What Success Looks Like
In your first 6–12 months, you will:
- Own & Ship: Drive the technical implementation and delivery of key features in the AI-assisted UI platform from requirements to production.
- Elevate Operations: Establish automated validation, testing, and telemetry for your platform domain, reducing friction for adopting teams.
- Partner & Validate: Work directly with internal engineering customers to onboard them to the platform, capturing feedback to iterate on platform APIs and DSLs.
- Raise the Bar: Actively contribute to team design reviews, mentor junior team members, and champion front-end best practices.
Why Join This Team
- Work on a foundational platform that directly accelerates how mission-critical software is built for space exploration.
- Combine generative AI technology with rigorous, high-standard platform engineering.
- Join a culture that values engineering discipline, operational excellence, and technical ownership.
