Job Description

Job Summary

Creating and optimizing complex CNC programs for precision parts used in robotic systems. This position operates with a high degree of autonomy and technical fluency, designing advanced toolpaths, recommending tooling and fixturing strategies, and ensuring efficient, high-quality machining. The technician regularly collaborates with engineers, machinists, and quality personnel to resolve issues, improve cycle times, and ensure that parts meet exacting robotic
system requirements. This role is ideal for an expert technician who bridges the gap between programming, machining, and production engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

● Develop and modify complex CNC programs/machine set-ups for multi-axis lathes and mills used in robotic component manufacturing.

● Analyze engineering drawings and 3D CAD models, applying GD&T knowledge to ensure programs meet precision requirements.

● Recommend advanced tooling, speeds, feeds, and clamping methods for high-performance materials.

● Design and document custom fixtures for challenging part geometries and robotic integration needs.

● Program, set up, and operate complex CNC equipment to manufacture precision components to tight specifications, optimizing tool paths and machining parameters for quality and efficiency.

● Perform test runs, simulate toolpaths, and validate output for accuracy, quality, and efficiency.

● Troubleshoot complex machining issues and provide guidance to machinists and junior programmers.

● Contribute to root cause analysis of quality issues and lead program-level corrective actions.

● Maintain detailed setup documentation and revision control within quality management systems.

● Identify and implement process improvements to reduce cycle time, scrap, and setup complexity.

Core Competencies:

● Execution
○ Analyzes and prioritizes the varying aspects of the role, knows and/or follows the most effective and efficient processes to get things done, and consistently
achieves results—even under tough circumstances.

● Collaboration
○ Builds partnerships and works collaboratively with others to meet shared
objectives through effective communication that understands the unique needs of different audiences.

● Innovation
○ Creates new and better ways for the organization to be successful, and
anticipates and adopts innovations in business, operations, and technology
applications.

● Adaptability
○ Adapts and pivots in real time to match the shifting demands of different
situations, and moves forward productively and optimistically under conditions of change and ambiguity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

● Expert knowledge of CNC programming (including multi-axis machining), G-code, M-code, and CAM tools (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, Siemens NX).

● Ability to interpret complex part drawings, surface models, and assemblies with tight tolerances.

● In-depth understanding of machining strategies for robotics materials (e.g., aluminum, titanium, engineered plastics).

● Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for tooling, setups, and surface finish quality.

● Capable of designing fixturing solutions for custom or complex geometries.

● Experience with DFM principles, lean manufacturing, and process optimization.

● Strong written and verbal communication skills to document and explain technical work.

Typical Qualifications:

● High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certification in machining or manufacturing preferred.

● 5+ years of experience in CNC programming and advanced machining, preferably in robotics, aerospace, or precision manufacturing.

● Experience with 4- or 5-axis machines and advanced CAM software required.

● Demonstrated ability to lead or mentor junior technicians is highly valued.

● Familiarity with quality systems such as ISO 9001 or AS9100, and with ERP/CAD/CAM integration tools.

The pay range for this position is between $44.00 to $54.00 per hour. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting. Boston Dynamics offers a generous Benefits package including medical, dental vision, 401(k), paid time off and a annual bonus structure. Additional details regarding these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer for employment.
