Job Description

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers, suppliers, and many others to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised $4 billion of capital, making us the largest and leading fusion company in the world.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as Director, Manufacturing, Operations & Supply Chain Finance

We are seeking a strategic and analytical Director of Manufacturing, Operations & Supply Chain Finance to lead our operations finance team.

The ideal candidate blends deep Manufacturing and Operations Finance expertise with the executive presence needed to influence operational strategy and manage manufacturing costs. Reporting to the VP FP&A, this role provides financial leadership across manufacturing sites, including planning, reporting, inventory management, capital investment, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The Director of Manufacturing, Operations & Supply Chain Finance will manage a team of finance business partners, owning finance support across the plants/BUs, and allocations across a matrixed Operations team. As CFS shifts from proving fusion to manufacturing it, this key role will build the operations-finance leadership that turns the breakthrough into economics that support scalability.

What you'll do:

Strategic Financial Leadership:

  • Serve as the primary financial advisor to the Manufacturing and Supply chain leadership teams, providing strategic decision support on cost management, capital investments, and operational efficiencies
  • Translate financial results into operational decisions; bring proactive analysis and clear recommendations to the leadership table
  • Responsible for multi-year budgets, cash flows and long range plans as well as financial KPIs to inform leadership decisions
  • Capital Allocation and Make vs Buy Decisions:

    • Lead the economics of make-vs-buy, sourcing, and vertical integration decisions
    • Own the financial and capital allocation framework for capital projects including factory build-outs, capacity expansions, new-capability introductions. Drive the development of business cases, ROI/NPV, and post-investment review
    • Build and mature the operations-finance infrastructure —data, processes, reporting and systems— for a fast-scaling organization
    • Cost & Manufacturing Finance for Plants/OEM Business:

      • Provide financial expertise to support decisions related to production planning, inventory management, and procurement strategies for manufacturing plants that support vertical integration as well as supply external customers
      • Responsible for long term COGS improvement and supporting margin optimization efforts
      • Direct variance analysis, and management reporting for operations, in partnership with Cost Accounting
      • Standardize and own the standard-costing framework, ensuring cost roll-ups, and unit-cost tracking across the plants; oversee analysis of purchase price variance, absorption, yield, scrap, and capacity utilization
      • Support the implementation and rollout of planning tools and ERP modules to enable manufacturing and cost reporting

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in finance, with a focus on manufacturing and supply chain operations. Deep understanding of Cost Accounting mechanics
  • Proven management skills and the ability to lead, mentor and develop high-functioning finance teams. Demonstrated success building scalable processes and systems in a high-growth organization
  • Experience supporting multi-site, manufacturing operations and ability to operate in a matrixed organization
  • Proven ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels
  • Ability to travel occasionally to manufacturing facilities and supply chain locations
  • Bonus Points For:

  • Masters in Business Administration/CMA
  • Experience supporting a high-growth company
  • Must-have Requirements:

  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Hybrid

At CFS, we excel in fast-paced environments, driven by our values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we grow, we’re eager to bring on mission-driven folks who offer diverse perspectives and fresh ways to tackle challenges.

We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally, regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law.

This role requires compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information (collectively, “Export Control Laws"). Any offer of employment will be contingent on the need for compliance with such Export Control Laws.
