Job Description
Saronic Technologies is a leader in revolutionizing autonomy at sea, dedicated to developing state-of-the-art solutions that enhance maritime operations through autonomous and intelligent platforms.
Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Quality Engineer – Accuracy Control to join our team in support of the building, integration, and testing of autonomous surface vessels. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for ensuring dimensional accuracy, alignment compliance, and precision measurement quality across shipyard operations—including hull fabrication, structural integration, outfitting, machinery alignment, and vessel assembly. You will work closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to monitor, evaluate, and improve dimensional control processes using advanced metrology equipment such as laser trackers and total stations, ensuring vessels meet all customer, naval, and industry requirements.
Responsibilities
Accuracy Control & Dimensional Verification:
Develop, implement, and maintain dimensional control and precision measurement procedures for shipyard fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing activities. Perform high-accuracy inspections and alignment verification to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, regulatory/military standards, and customer specifications.
Precision Measurement & Alignment:
Utilize laser trackers, total stations, digital levels, and other metrology equipment to establish and maintain vessel coordinate systems, reference datums, and control networks. Conduct dimensional inspections and alignment verification for hull structures, foundations, machinery, propulsion systems, piping, and integrated vessel systems.
Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities to improve dimensional control workflows, fabrication accuracy, and shipyard quality processes. Partner with engineering and production teams to reduce rework, improve fit-up efficiency, and implement best practices for vessel construction and integration activities.
Inspection and Testing:
Conduct dimensional inspections and provide oversight of critical assembly and integration processes. Support harbor acceptance testing and sea trial activities by verifying structural and system alignment, dimensional compliance, and overall vessel readiness prior to delivery.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of inspection data, measurement reports, alignment results, and dimensional nonconformances. Prepare and present reports related to quality performance, deviation analysis, corrective actions, and process improvements.
Compliance and Standards:
Ensure compliance with customer specifications, naval and maritime standards, ISO 9001 requirements, and internal quality procedures. Maintain calibration records and ensure proper operation and certification of precision measurement equipment.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner with engineering, production, welding, outfitting, and program teams to resolve dimensional discrepancies, fit-up issues, and alignment concerns. Provide technical support during vessel construction and integration activities to ensure quality and schedule objectives are achieved.
Training and Mentorship:
Support training of shipyard personnel, inspectors, and technicians on dimensional control processes, metrology equipment, accuracy control procedures, and inspection best practices.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Surveying, Geomatics, Quality Engineering, or a related technical field. Advanced certifications in metrology, dimensional inspection, or quality systems are a plus.
Experience:
3–5 years of experience in quality engineering, dimensional control, metrology, or related roles within shipbuilding, defense, offshore fabrication, or complex manufacturing environments. Experience supporting vessel construction, module integration, and marine structural alignment activities is highly desirable.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of shipyard fabrication and vessel construction processes including hull fabrication, welding, outfitting, structural fit-up, and mechanical integration. Hands-on experience with precision measurement systems including:
Laser Trackers (Leica, FARO, API, or similar)
Total Stations
Digital Levels
3D Metrology Software
Proficiency interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, shipbuilding tolerances, and alignment requirements. Familiarity with software such as PolyWorks, SpatialAnalyzer, Leica Cyclone, AutoCAD, or similar metrology and reporting platforms is preferred.
Problem-Solving:
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify root causes of dimensional discrepancies, fit-up issues, distortion, and alignment problems in a fast-paced shipyard production environment.
Communication:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with shipyard personnel, engineering teams, production leadership, and external regulatory representatives.
Attention to Detail:
High attention to detail with commitment to delivering vessels and systems that meet strict naval, customer, and regulatory dimensional accuracy requirements
Physical Demands:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Occasional standing and walking within the office
Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment
Visual acuity to read screens, documents, and reports
Occasional reaching, bending, or stooping to access file drawers, cabinets, or office supplies
Lifting and carrying items up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, packages)
