Wisk Aero has put a second Generation 6 aircraft into the air at its Hollister, California test site, doubling the prototype fleet that will carry the company through the most consequential certification campaign in the autonomous eVTOL sector — a campaign Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation are now racing to match with their own accelerated timelines.
Wisk is the only developer to have designed, built, and flown six distinct generations of eVTOL aircraft, a lineage tracing to 2011 under the Zee Aero banner, funded by Google co-founder Larry Page. The Gen 6, revealed in October 2022, is the first autonomous eVTOL the FAA has accepted as a type-certification candidate. Boeing, which partnered with Wisk's predecessor Kitty Hawk in June 2019 and later spun the effort out as Wisk Aero, aims to present the Gen 6 for U.S. certification around 2028, backed by a $450 million commitment. If the timeline holds, the aircraft would become the first pilotless, passenger-carrying eVTOL to earn an FAA type certificate.
Wisk publishes a three-pillar certification framework: type certification for the aircraft design, production certification for the manufacturing system, and operational certification for the autonomy suite and ground infrastructure. The Gen 6 is a four-passenger, all-electric machine with a claimed range of 10 miles plus reserves, cruising above 100 feet at roughly 100 knots. Sebastien Vigneron took over as CEO in May 2025, and in June the company acquired SkyGrid, a third-party service provider for advanced air mobility, turning it into a Wisk subsidiary. The moves signal a shift from pure vehicle development to building the operational layer the certification framework demands.
The Gen 6 program now paces Wisk's engineering workforce. Every additional test hour on two aircraft generates data the FAA will scrutinize — and every data gap becomes a staffing requirement. That pressure is already visible in the company's hiring.

Systems engineering at this stage means writing and tracing requirements across flight-control laws, redundancy architecture, and the autonomous decision-making stack that must satisfy FAA Part 21.17(b) special-condition criteria for pilotless transport-category aircraft. The Talent Market Responds
Wisk's accelerated Gen 6 program and the hiring surge it has triggered do not unfold in isolation. The two most visible U.S. eVTOL developers — the same rivals racing to match Wisk's timeline — are pushing their own certification and production milestones, and each move pulls from the same shallow pool of senior systems engineers, flight-test specialists, and autonomy architects.
Joby, headquartered in Santa Cruz with 2,500 employees, has been the sector's pace-setter for headcount growth. Its manufacturing footprint alone now demands a different caliber of systems talent. In January 2026 the company announced a second production facility in Dayton, Ohio, spanning 700,000 square feet to complement the existing Marina, California line. That expansion coincides with the March 2026 start of flight testing for Joby's first FAA-conforming S4 eVTOL at Marina, a direct step toward Type Inspection Authorization and commercial certification. The same month, the FAA selected Joby for five eIPP projects covering early operations in five states including New York, Texas, and Florida. Hiring criteria have shifted toward demonstrated certification throughput.
