Variance Raises $21.5M Series A to Build Autonomous AI Risk and Compliance Agents
Variance, a San Francisco software firm developing AI agents for risk and compliance investigations, has raised $21.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Ten Eleven Ventures. Additional investors include 645 Ventures, Okta Ventures, Urban Innovation Fund, and Y Combinator, bringing the company's total funding to $26 million.
Formerly known as Intrinsic, Variance builds autonomous AI agents designed to execute end-to-end investigative workflows for enterprise compliance and trust and safety teams. The platform targets processes such as Know Your Customer (KYC), Know Your Business (KYB), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), transaction monitoring, and fraud detection—tasks that traditionally require teams of human analysts searching across multiple disconnected systems.
According to Business Wire, Variance processes more than 70 million context signals daily and carries out approximately 300,000 automated enforcement actions across customer environments.
Automated Compliance Workflows and Platform Architecture
Variance was founded in 2023 by CEO Karine Mellata and CTO Michael Lin, who previously worked together on fraud engineering and algorithmic risk systems at Apple. Mellata holds a B.Eng in Computer Engineering from McGill University. Lin completed a Master of Science in Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology and previously built online abuse tools at Discord.
"AI is the biggest leap we've ever had for both facilitating and stopping crime," Mellata said in the company's funding announcement. "We intend to use it to its fullest, to make sure it's on the side of the people trying to stop it."
Variance operates on a technical stack combining machine learning inference services, a NextJS and TypeScript frontend, Python backend services, and Google Cloud Platform infrastructure managed with Kubernetes and Terraform. The system uses three main layers to execute investigations:
- Context Engine: Maps enterprise entities, events, and historical investigations into a single ontology for multi-hop investigations.
- SOP Enforcement Layer: Encodes corporate compliance policies written in plain English into executable, auditable steps.
- Data Access Layer: Connects to more than 150 global business registries, sanctions lists, court dockets, and media sources across surface, deep, and dark web environments.
For institutions with strict data sovereignty rules, Variance supports on-premise and air-gapped deployments using customer-managed encryption keys and confidential computing.
