Skalar Analytical Builds 800 Analyzers a Year; Job Board Lists 17 Roles

By Rachel Kim•

The Open Roles: Scope, Functions, and Where They Sit

Skalar Analytical, a Dutch laboratory-automation manufacturer, is recruiting a Lead Mechanical Engineer / Senior Product Development Engineer in Breda to own the mechanical architecture of new analyzers, while a Munich-tagged Zero G Talent board lists 17 roles across product, design, software, data, commercial and finance. The Breda requisition signals continued R&D investment in next-generation analyzer development, but it does not prove a synchronized 17-role campaign. The clearest engineering screen is for hands-on machine design; separate Skalar postings add chemistry, analytical-science and process-instrument signals.

For technical job seekers, the defensible response is to tailor applications to process-instrumentation credentials—chemistry or analytical science, mechanical design and production experience—rather than invoke automation without proof. The postings reviewed here support that reading of the requirements, but they include no application counts, time-to-fill data or before-and-after résumés, so any claim about how many candidates changed their applications would be speculation.

Skalar’s own careers material and Zero G Talent do not document a synchronized campaign; one centers on a Breda R&D vacancy, while the other groups roles across functions under München.

The Breda technical lead anchors Skalar Analytical’s R&D hiring

Skalar also gives the role the title Team Lead Mechanical Engineering. Its posting said:

“Would you like to play a key role in developing the next generation of laboratory analyzers?”

The vacancy gives the lead functional and hierarchical responsibility for mechanical engineering, hands-on product work and influence over R&D strategy and the technology roadmap. The analyzer platforms are aimed at the international mid- and high-end market.

The role covers the mechanical architecture of new analyzers and subsystems, product development, 3D CAD designs, drawings and technical documentation. It also includes Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly and other DFx principles, FMEAs and other quality analyses, and support for prototyping, testing, verification and validation. The lead collaborates with project management, systems engineering, electronics, software, production and supply-chain teams, and is responsible for quality, project timelines and technical standards. The position also requires coaching, mentoring and developing mechanical engineers.

Skalar said its R&D, assembly, quality-control, helpdesk and service teams work together, while purchasing, human resources, sales and support also fall under the company’s own management. Those details place the role within Skalar’s in-house machine-building operation rather than a stand-alone software team.

Skalar Analytical’s 17-role board roster sits in Munich

The current Zero G Talent record lists all 17 roles with München as their board location. One entry carries the “added in the past 7 days” flag, and that is the Sales Development Representative. Because the board gives no shared posting date, the roster lists current roles rather than proving that all the positions were added together.

The function column below groups titles for readability; it is not a category supplied by the board. Role names and board-listed locations are reproduced as shown.

The table shows breadth, not a shared job description: a city tag and function label do not import another posting’s criteria.

What the public records do and do not show

Read together, the records support a selective R&D signal alongside a broader mixed board, not a single requisition family or a dated campaign. Location and function must be separated before credentials are compared; the postings themselves supply the next filter.

What Passes the Screen: Credentials, Keywords, and Domain Signals

The supplied public pages contain no recruiter scoring model, but they do name the credentials, keywords and domain signals applicants are expected to demonstrate. The lead mechanical engineering and product-development posting sets the clearest engineering benchmark. Because the pages are undated, its criteria describe this snapshot rather than every requisition.

Mechanical depth is explicit in the lead role

The Breda vacancy requires a bachelor’s degree (HBO) in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline. Applicants need at least 8 years of experience in product development and mechanical design, including experience leading engineers or technical project teams.

The formal screen also calls for experience with 3D CAD and PLM systems. Candidates need simulation or engineering calculations involving thermal performance, structural strength and tolerances, plus familiarity with mechatronics, systems development, DFx methodologies and FMEA. Excellent command of Dutch and English completes the stated requirements.

Skalar’s undated work-at-Skalar page describes “enormous growth” and separately states that, as a machine builder, the company constructs about 800 new analyzers annually. The vacancy asks for product-development and mechanical-design experience, so applicants should show how they developed complex products and brought them toward production rather than only servicing existing components.

The lead vacancy names product development, mechanical design, complex technical products and machinery, technical development and analyzer platforms. A separate Skalar Product Specialist profile adds market research, analysis of market data and trends, new product concepts, and development based on market demand. The application should show how a candidate turned that demand into a product decision.

The label “mechanical engineer” alone does not meet that standard.

Chemistry is a domain signal across functions

A Skalar Product Specialist profile requires a completed bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, with Analytical or Instrumental Analysis named as the relevant disciplines. The company’s work-at-Skalar page said many employees have a chemical background. It identifies the application laboratory and process laboratory as the company’s main chemistry departments, while product managers, sales-support staff, service engineers and quality colleagues often come from chemistry backgrounds.

That degree is not a universal gate. The Breda sales-support vacancy asks for a background in chemistry or experience in a technical sales environment, so that posting does not establish a chemistry requirement for every commercial opening.

Candidates from adjacent instrumentation fields should show chemistry education, analytical or instrumental-analysis experience and familiarity with the measurement families tied to the role. The Product Specialist profile calls experience in a similar instrumental-analysis position an advantage, specifically TOC, TN or elemental analysis. Those terms deserve prominent space only when laboratory or process work backs them.

Skalar also said it continually introduces new chemical applications and develops progressive measuring methods. Terms from that work should be included only when a candidate can document them.

Software roles still sit beside the machine

Skalar’s software team brings together developers, designers, testers, application specialists and embedded-software specialists. Skalar says software is used to control analysis equipment and that software specialists deal with disciplines outside software on a daily basis. That places software work in an instrument context. The public pages do not name a programming language, framework or degree requirement for every software vacancy, and they do not show one shared stack or an extra credential list for every AI role. For a software or AI candidate, the instrument-system context matters more than merely naming the field.

Secondary filters still remove mismatches

Some operational filters can outweigh technical fit. A Skalar Product Specialist profile listed good spoken and written English, an accurate and result-oriented work ethic, willingness to make long international trips and a full, clean driving license. The posting ties those conditions to that role, and the records do not apply them to every board entry, although candidates can overlook them when they reuse an engineering résumé from another sector.

Tailor the evidence, not the label

Candidate type should determine the order of the evidence. Mechanical hires need design and production decisions, chemists need analytical specialization and methods, and software hires need their place in the instrument system. Product and application candidates should connect market demand to a new analyzer or measurement method.

Skalar’s supplied pages publish no applicant-tracking-system keyword list, so no phrase guarantees an interview. The source set offers no applicant counts, résumé comparisons or interview feedback from which to judge how many candidates changed their applications. It does show what each posting asks candidates to foreground.

Before submitting, build a two-column evidence map. Put the exact requirement from the posting in the first column and a project, credential, method and result in the second. If the second cell is empty, the application has not earned that claim. Make one chain easy to verify: credential, measurement method, machine, product result.

The Location Filter: Breda, Relocation, and Onsite Expectations

The job feed’s location labels require caution. A München label on Zero G Talent’s Skalar Analytical company board sits uneasily with Skalar’s identification of Breda, Netherlands, as its headquarters. The company’s undated LinkedIn profile lists 125 people at Breda, which supports treating the headquarters as an operating center rather than a paper address. It does not, however, establish the actual location of the roles tagged München on the job board.

Skalar’s contact page said:

“Our headquarters is located in the south of The Netherlands. It is equipped with the full production line from sales to distribution.”

Skalar’s company profile also says the headquarters handles research, development, assembly and support for its international sales and after-sales network. That makes Breda a research and production hub, not merely a registered address. The public pages set no fixed office schedule for every role.

Nothing in those pages describes Skalar as remote-first. Its offices page lists locations in the Netherlands, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States, Canada and India, supported by a global distribution network. The company says its staff at these sites are experts in sales, service and maintenance and remain closely connected to the Dutch headquarters. The pages identify Breda as the headquarters and R&D location and support a multi-site service footprint, not a remote-work policy.

Zero G nonetheless lists the Product Engineer and Senior Product Designer under München, alongside the rest of the board, even though both titles are product-focused. Even the Initiativbewerbung carries the München label. The public materials do not explain how those tags relate to Skalar’s Netherlands-based operations.

For the Breda vacancy, living in Breda or the surrounding area is an explicit requirement. The source set documents no relocation package, visa support, hybrid schedule or remote-work policy for these postings. That silence does not prove that every employee attends an office every working day. Skalar’s general work-at-Skalar page does list flexible working hours, but it provides no role-specific hybrid or remote arrangement.

A Breda-based application should state willingness to work from Breda and explain any required move; an application for a München-labeled role should establish the actual work location and any eligibility for a Munich arrangement.

Those based in the Netherlands who want the Breda headquarters should say so and ask the hiring contact to confirm the work location. Those seeking a role labeled München should answer that point directly.

Before submitting, make the first line answerable: state your base location, where you can work, and whether relocation is required. Put base location, travel constraints and relocation status near the top, then connect them to hands-on analyzer and instrumentation work. Generic claims about collaboration do not answer the location filter.

The Broader Signal: Lab Automation Investment and Candidate Response

Skalar’s own company history traces the business to 1965 and credits continuing R&D with many new analyzers. The range documented across its product portfolio spans continuous-flow and discrete analysis, robotic sample handling, digestion automation, carbon/nitrogen analysis and solid-phase extraction. That product range gives technical candidates specific terms to use instead of a generic software claim about automation.

The corporate context is a portfolio build. Whiteford Research’s company review records Battery Ventures’ acquisition of Skalar in March 2023, with the platform-creation announcement published on September 28, 2023, and cites the Battery portfolio page and Skalar/EST release. It reports that no transaction value or valuation was disclosed. ChemEurope’s report describes Advanced Automation Technologies (AAT) as a laboratory-automation platform backed by Battery. AAT then acquired TE Instruments, and Velaris later acquired Markes International, whose gas-chromatography and gas-chromatography-mass-spectrometry technologies added sample preparation, chromatographic separation and data handling. The result is a group spanning sample preparation, analysis and service.

In ChemEurope’s report, Battery general partner and AAT board member Zack Smotherman said:

“As we approach two years since our initial investment in Skalar Analytical, we are pleased with the organic growth of each brand within the AAT family and are excited about the ongoing market tailwinds supporting the development of the platform.”

The remark places the vacancies within a portfolio-growth story, but no public record ties a vacancy to a specific acquisition. It supplies corporate context, not a causal claim.

Skalar reported subsidiaries in most European countries, North America and India, with more than 80 representatives worldwide. The Markes announcement said the group’s European and North American presence, plus local assembly in China, should widen sales and service coverage. Velaris also said PromoChrom brought automated solid-phase-extraction expertise in PFAS testing. These product lines give environmental and water candidates specific language to use and show how the group’s work reaches environmental, food, industrial and life-science laboratories.

The mix of product lines, portfolio expansion and service footprint shows that the recruiting reaches beyond a single craft. For any documented role, however, the evidence still comes down to the workflow named in the posting.

Before submitting, make sure the application answers two practical questions: where the candidate can work and whether they can explain both the science and the hardware behind the instrument. Leaving either unanswered weakens the analyzer story.
