NASA jobs in 2026: how to actually get hired at the space agency

$76K–$197K
GS-12 to GS-15 Range

Getting a NASA job in 2026 is both harder and more nuanced than most people realize. The agency shrank from ~17,400 civil servants to roughly 14,000 after nearly 3,000 employees accepted deferred resignation offers in 2025. The proposed FY2026 budget called for cutting down to 11,853 — though Congress enacted $24.4 billion (rejecting the deepest proposed cuts). Some centers face 40%+ workforce reductions while others are partially protected by Artemis.

But NASA still hires. And the contractor ecosystem employs 3-4x more people than NASA's civil service. Here's how the system actually works.

Two paths: civil servant vs. contractor

Path 1: NASA civil servant (USAJobs)

NASA civil servants are federal employees hired through USAJobs.gov. They receive GS pay, federal benefits (FERS pension, TSP 401(k) with 5% match, FEHB health insurance), and career stability — though the 2025-2026 workforce reductions tested that stability like never before.

How USAJobs works for NASA:

  1. Create a USAJobs account and build a federal resume (the format differs significantly from private sector resumes — use the CAR method: Challenge/Action/Result)
  2. Search for NASA vacancies (also posted at nasa.usajobs.gov)
  3. Complete the online assessment and questionnaire
  4. HR specialists score your application against the position's qualification requirements
  5. Qualified applicants are ranked and referred to the hiring manager
  6. Hiring manager interviews selected candidates

Critical detail: Vacancy announcements often open for just a few days. Pathways Program summer/fall 2026 applications were open February 23-27, 2026 — a 4-day window. Set up USAJobs alerts and have your resume ready.

Veterans preference: Veterans with a 10%+ disability rating receive automatic placement at the top of referral lists. This is a significant competitive advantage in the federal hiring process.

Path 2: NASA contractor

NASA's contractor workforce is 3-4x larger than its civil service. Major NASA contractors and their recent contract values:

Contractor NASA Contracts (FY2021-2025) Focus
Caltech/JPL $9.8B Manages JPL, robotic missions
Boeing $6.4B SLS core stage
SpaceX $5.4B HLS lander, crew transport
Lockheed Martin $2.8B Orion capsule
Northrop Grumman $2.0B SLS boosters, Cygnus
Jacobs $1.9B Facility/mission operations
Johns Hopkins APL $1.5B Science missions
Blue Origin $1.2B HLS alternate lander
KBR $1.2B + $3.6B HHPC2 JSC human health, mission ops
SAIC Major IT/mission support
Leidos Major Engineering/IT support

The common path: Work as a NASA support contractor first (at KBR, Jacobs, Leidos, or SAIC), learn NASA processes and culture, then apply to civil servant positions with an insider's understanding of the agency. Contractor experience at a NASA center gives you a meaningful advantage in the USAJobs application process.

GS pay scale for NASA engineers (2026)

The 2026 pay raise was 1% across-the-board, with locality rates frozen at 2025 levels.

Grade Base (Step 1) Houston (35%) DC Metro (34%) Bay Area (45%)
GS-7 $43,106 $58,193 $57,729 $62,612
GS-9 $52,727 $71,182 $70,615 $76,588
GS-11 $63,795 $86,123 $85,437 $92,679
GS-12 $76,463 $103,225 $102,403 $111,072
GS-13 $90,925 $122,749 $121,772 $132,078
GS-14 $107,446 $145,052 $143,913 $156,063
GS-15 $126,384 $170,618 $169,279 $183,573

Pay cap: $197,200. Engineers typically start at GS-7 (BS) or GS-9 (MS), with automatic promotion through the GS-7/9/11/12 career ladder in 3-4 years. Most journey-level engineers sit at GS-12 or GS-13.

2026 workforce reality

NASA's proposed FY2026 cuts vary dramatically by center: Goddard faces 46% workforce reduction, Glenn 40%, Langley and Stennis 39%, while JSC (21%) and Marshall (23%) are partially protected by Artemis. Congress largely rejected these cuts in the enacted $24.4B budget, but workforce reductions already underway may not be fully reversed. More than 2,000 additional civil servants could face involuntary reductions in force (RIFs). If you're targeting a NASA career, focus on Artemis-protected centers (JSC, KSC, MSFC) and programs with sustained funding.

Where NASA is hiring

Most protected centers (Artemis-linked):

  • JSC (Houston) — Mission control, astronaut training, Orion. 21% proposed cut (smallest).
  • MSFC (Huntsville) — SLS propulsion, in-space propulsion. 23% proposed cut.
  • KSC (Cape Canaveral) — Launch operations, commercial crew. 25% proposed cut.

Most impacted centers:

  • Goddard (Greenbelt, MD) — 46% proposed cut. 13 buildings shuttering.
  • Glenn (Cleveland) — 40% proposed cut. Already lost ~600 employees (19%).
  • JPL (Pasadena) — Caltech-managed, 1,400+ positions eliminated in 4 layoff rounds.

Still hiring for: Artemis mission-critical roles (propulsion, avionics, systems, flight software), cybersecurity, AI/ML, and contractor positions supporting active programs.

Tips for getting hired

  1. Start as a contractor. Apply to KBR, Jacobs, Leidos, or SAIC for NASA support contracts. This gets you inside the center, learning NASA processes, building relationships, and understanding what civil servant roles need.

  2. Build a federal resume. Standard 1-page resumes don't work on USAJobs. Federal resumes should be 3-5 pages, detailing specific responsibilities, accomplishments, and hours per week for each position.

  3. Set up alerts immediately. Vacancy announcements close fast. Have your USAJobs profile complete and alerts set for "NASA" + your engineering specialty.

  4. Target Pathways if you're a student. The Pathways Program converts interns directly to permanent positions without competing on USAJobs. Application windows are extremely short (3-5 days).

  5. Get clearance-ready. While most NASA civil servant roles don't require a clearance, many contractor positions on classified programs do. Being clearance-eligible (US citizen, clean background) opens more doors.

  6. Focus on Artemis-linked centers. JSC, KSC, and MSFC have the most budget protection and the strongest hiring outlook in the current environment.
