Laminar Expands Industrial AI Footprint Following New Accolades and International Push

Laminar, the industrial physical AI startup formerly known as H2Ok Innovations, is accelerating deployments of its factory automation platform across global consumer packaged goods plants. The company operates out of Greentown Labs in Somerville, Massachusetts, with registered headquarters in Cambridge.

Founded in 2020, Laminar has built an operating footprint spanning food and beverage facilities on six continents. The company has raised $19.8 million in Series A funding from investors including Atlantic Labs, Foodlabs, and Foothill Ventures, alongside backing from Greycroft, Construct Capital, 2048 Ventures, Flybridge Capital, Techstars, and Y Combinator.

The company's expansion follows commercial recognition across the processing sector. In October 2026, the Association for Dressings and Sauces named Laminar its Supplier Partner of the Year in the Equipment and Service category, as reported by StreetInsider. The blinded nomination was submitted by member manufacturers evaluating operational floor performance. Earlier in 2026, the company received the Edison Gold Award in Manufacturing and Logistics, earned a FoodTech Innovation Award, and was selected as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer.

Sensor Hardware and Closed-Loop Process Automation

Laminar develops inline spectral sensors and machine learning models designed to automate fluid monitoring inside factory lines. In food, beverage, and personal care facilities, product changeovers require recurring Clean-In-Place (CIP) cycles. Traditional production relies on static, timer-based cleanings that flush lines according to fixed intervals regardless of fluid conditions.

Laminar installs patented optical sensors directly into existing factory piping, creating real-time digital signatures of fluids as they pass through tanks and reactors. Its models interpret these spectral measurements against the facility's baseline process states, autonomously signaling line switches the moment target cleanliness or separation is reached.

Data published across the company's customer base—which includes AB InBev, Coca-Cola, and Unilever—indicates an average 20% reduction in water use, 20% reduction in chemical consumption, and 15% faster cycle times. At Unilever's manufacturing facility in Poznań, Poland, the system saved more than €100,000 annually per line across two production lines.

Founding Team and Backgrounds

Laminar was started by siblings Annie Lu and David Lu. Both grew up around their family's chemical manufacturing business.

Annie Lu, who serves as Chief Executive Officer, studied at Harvard University. In July 2026, she was named to the 100 Women in AI list, as reported by PR Newswire.

David Lu holds a BS in Atmospheric Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Before Laminar, he co-founded environmental monitoring firm Clarity Movement, an air-quality sensor business backed by SOSV.

Expanding Deployments to Latin America

Laminar is now taking its plant deployments into Latin America. Speaking at the Silicon Valley @ Brazil conference in September 2026, David Lu told Valor International that the company is establishing an office in Brazil scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027.

"In the past, innovation almost always happened through software alone. But you can’t really optimize a factory that way, because it’s not just software, it’s not just code," Lu told the publication. "Factories make things and deal with physical materials. Building the factory of the future requires creating solutions that combine software and equipment."

The international expansion targets large-scale food, beverage, and agricultural processing facilities across the region, where water and thermal energy use represent major operational expenses.

Technical and Commercial Hiring Push

With 34 employees listed, Laminar is adding 18 roles across engineering, plant operations, sales, and executive management. All current open listings are based out of Somerville, Massachusetts.

The company's technical hiring centers on bridging industrial controls with modern software.
