The 187-Role Signal

As of late July 2026, RTX's public careers portal and LinkedIn listings show 187 open U.S. roles. A defense prime doesn't post three-figure requisition counts unless something structural has shifted. The last time RTX grew headcount at a double-digit percentage rate, a merger drove it. This time, a backlog growing faster than the workforce can absorb it is the trigger, and the firm's screening now stresses cross‑domain expertise and security‑clearance readiness, forcing job seekers to adapt their applications and pursue targeted upskilling.

The three business units each carry a distinct hiring fingerprint. Collins Aerospace, the avionics and interiors giant, needs systems-integration and digital-thread engineers. Pratt & Whitney hunts propulsion analysts, materials scientists, and manufacturing engineers who can bridge additive processes with legacy certification. Raytheon, the missiles-and-sensors arm, pushes hardest for cross-domain profiles: radar firmware developers who grasp electronic-warfare doctrine, cyber specialists with active clearances, model-based systems engineers who move between simulation and flight test without translation layers.

Revenue hit $90.4 billion trailing-twelve-months, up from $88.6 billion for full-year 2025. Fourth-quarter 2024 sales reached $21.6 billion, a 9 percent year-over-year increase on a reported basis, 11 percent organically. Analysts project another 5.8 percent revenue lift and 6.4 percent EPS growth this quarter. That top-line pressure keeps requisition counts climbing, with new roles appearing daily on a careers site advertising presence across the Americas, APAC, and EMEA.

Headcount sits at roughly 180,000, steady since the 2023 reorganization collapsed the former missiles-and-defense and intelligence-and-space units into the single Raytheon segment. The 2020 pandemic cut of over 8,000 commercial-aviation jobs at Collins and Pratt was part of a broader 62,200-role contraction that year; total headcount remains well below the 2019 peak of 243,200. The Arlington, Virginia headquarters move (completed July 2022) and the 2023 rebrand from Raytheon Technologies to RTX Corporation both signaled a company reorienting around great-power competition rather than commercial-cycle exposure.

What the raw count doesn't show is the clearance bottleneck. A meaningful slice of Raytheon-side roles, and a growing share of Collins' classified avionics work, require active TS/SCI or at least interim eligibility. That constraint shrinks the addressable candidate pool before a single resume is reviewed.

Inside the Screening Funnel

The funnel starts before a human reads a resume. Every candidate, across Raytheon, Pratt & Whitney, and Collins Aerospace, passes through HireVue, an asynchronous video platform serving as the first gate. Prompts are identical in structure but divergent in content: "Why RTX?" mapped to corporate values (Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, Innovation), STAR behavioral questions on safety, conflict, and process improvement, then a sharp fork into role-specific scenarios. Pratt candidates get engine-systems problems; Collins candidates face certification-workflow scenarios; Raytheon candidates draw clearance and program-rigor questions. Everyone gets a CORE continuous-improvement prompt. The platform scores keyword presence, STAR structure, and values alignment before a recruiter ever sees the file.

Values alignment is not decorative. Raytheon's legacy values — integrity, trust, respect, teamwork, creative thinking — and RTX's corporate five (Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, Innovation, with safety threaded through all) function as a rubric. Interviewers explicitly grade answers against them. A candidate who frames a story around "moving fast and breaking things" fails the cultural-fit screen; the organization is process-driven, matrixed, and compliance-heavy by design. Lone-wolf narratives score low. So do answers that treat safety as a checkbox rather than a leading constraint. Glassdoor data across 1,900-plus RTX-branded and 461 Raytheon-branded reports shows the single highest-impact prep step is identifying the business unit before answering any "Why RTX?" question. Measurable results in every bullet (numbers, percentages, dollars) separate the stack that gets a phone screen from the stack that doesn't.

The interview loop itself is a 25-question gauntlet for cleared Raytheon roles (fewer for uncleared Pratt or Collins positions), built on STAR discipline. Interviewers expect Situation, Task, Action, Result, and increasingly a second R for Reflection. Thin stories without quantified outcomes mapped to the five values trip the majority of candidates. So does vague technical talk: "complex systems" without naming the radar mode, the engine stage, or the certification artifact. Compliance literacy is pass-fail: candidates need not be lawyers, but not knowing what ITAR is raises an immediate flag. Clearance claims are verified; overstating level or currency ends the process.

Three failure patterns dominate: not knowing which BU you're interviewing for, missing the aerospace vocabulary the panel expects you to use fluently, and STAR stories with no measurable Results tied to Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, or Innovation. The screen filters for people who already speak the language of the program they'll join, and who can prove they've delivered inside its constraints.

Three Technical Pillars

RTX's current openings cluster around three technical pillars mapping directly to its product roadmap: artificial intelligence and machine learning, real-time embedded systems engineering, and cybersecurity — often in the same role. A 2026 Software Engineer I listing at Raytheon asks for "experience leveraging Generative AI and Machine Learning to improve productivity, collaboration, and performance" alongside "familiarity with real-time embedded systems or aerospace/defense applications" and "exposure to Open Systems Architectures and modular design principles." That triad (AI/ML, embedded real-time, open modular architectures) appears repeatedly across the requisitions.

The defense sector's AI adoption curve explains why. DoD created Task Force Lima in 2023 to align AI use across military operations, and the AI military market is projected to grow 33 percent annually through 2028. Defense teams now use ML to process sensor volumes legacy systems cannot handle, feeding intelligence, target identification, and tactical decision loops. The PATRIOT missile defense system already relies on complex algorithms that track incoming objects and discriminate threats in real time. RTX's portfolio — integrated air and missile defense, advanced sensors, space-based systems, hypersonics, kinetic and non-kinetic effectors — sits at the center of that transition.

Hybrid roles are emerging as a distinct category. The market now sees positions titled AI Security Engineer and Defensive AI Specialist, practitioners who protect ML models from model inversion, data poisoning, and adversarial input manipulation while maintaining operational availability in classified environments. RTX's cyber solutions portfolio spans critical infrastructure protection and the "nation's most critical cybersecurity challenges," per company materials.

Systems engineering demand hasn't softened — it has specialized. Those MOSA requirements appear as explicit requirements because DoD's Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) mandates now flow down to prime contractors. Engineers who can partition safety-critical functions, manage interface control documents, and verify real-time determinism on certified RTOS platforms clear the technical screen faster than generalists. The same postings that ask for generative AI experience also require embedded fluency, a combination that rules out pure software candidates without hardware-in-the-loop background.

Security clearance remains the non-negotiable filter. Most positions require Secret or Top Secret/SCI, with background investigations spanning six to eighteen months. Candidates holding active clearances enter the pipeline with a measurable advantage; those without must factor the timeline into any transition plan. Technical depth in AI, embedded systems, or cyber only matters after the clearance gate opens.

The convergence is deliberate. RTX's 185,000-person workforce spans Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon — each pushing AI into different layers: predictive maintenance on engine fleets, cognitive electronic warfare, autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments. A candidate who can demonstrate a deployed ML model on an embedded target, articulate the cyber risk surface of that model, and speak the language of MOSA compliance covers the three columns hiring managers are scoring against.

How the Market Is Reacting

The surge has collided with a defense talent market already defined by structural invisibility and geographic arbitrage. LinkedIn Talent Insights data from Q4 2024 shows 95 percent of senior cleared candidates are passive, with an average tenure of 6.2 years at their current employer. Fill timelines run 120 to 180 days. ClearanceJobs' 2024 Cleared Recruitment Insights Report places 85 to 90 percent of qualified cleared professionals in the passive category. Active candidates tend to be career changers or individuals whose clearances have lapsed, requiring 12 to 18 months of reinvestigation before they can be productive. The bottleneck is not the absence of qualified engineers; it is the absence of qualified engineers who already hold active TS/SCI clearances.

Competitors are not waiting. The Arizona Manufacturing Council's Q4 2024 Workforce Survey found 68 percent of precision manufacturers in the Tucson area reported active recruitment from competitor facilities. The typical pattern involves Tier 1 missile systems suppliers paying 35 to 40 percent salary premiums above prevailing wage scales to secure machinists with DoD security clearances. For systems engineers, the geographic competition is sharper. Defense contractors in Tucson report 25 percent higher voluntary attrition to Huntsville and Phoenix than compensation differentials alone would predict, per the Arizona Commerce Authority's 2024 Defense Talent Retention Study.

Huntsville offers career progression density: a cleared systems engineer can move from Northrop Grumman to Lockheed Martin to Boeing without changing their commute. Phoenix presents a different pull. TSMC's $65 billion fabrication investment and Intel's expansion have created a semiconductor and defense electronics market paying 8 to 12 percent more for systems engineers. Denver draws senior program management and space systems talent with premiums exceeding 20 percent, a lower unemployment rate of 2.8 percent versus Tucson's 3.2 percent, and a space economy anchored by Ball Aerospace and Lockheed Martin Space.

The pressure cascades down the supply chain. When RTX scales hiring to fill a new hypersonic production line, the gravitational pull on the local talent pool intensifies. Vacancy rates for military and civilian positions hover at 16 percent, translating to roughly 28,000 unfilled positions in 2024. Private sector tech companies continue outpacing defense organizations in both scaling and internal R&D spending, with ground autonomy market funding reaching over $100 billion since 2010 compared to defense funding of roughly $3 billion. A significant salary gap persists: private-sector STEM workers earn approximately $2,600 more annually after accounting for observable differences. Seventy percent of aerospace and defense companies have lower organizational health scores than the global median.

Against this backdrop, RTX's 187 roles are not just a hiring plan. They are a market event that competitors, candidates, and the supply chain are already pricing in.

Hiring Cycles: Then and Now

The current openings land against a workforce that has shrunk 26 percent from its modern peak. As of December 31, 2019, the company employed 243,200 people. By the end of 2025 that figure stood at 180,000 — a net loss of 63,200 positions over six years, per StockAnalysis.com's compilation of SEC filings. The current hiring pulse is not a return to broad-based expansion; it is a targeted insertion of specialized talent into a leaner organization.

That prior surge was 2003, when the company added 48,300 employees (a 31 percent jump) amid the post-9/11 defense buildup. The 2018–2019 period showed a milder 17 percent increase (35,000 roles) as the United Technologies–Raytheon merger integrated two industrial bases. Both cycles were driven by volume: more airframes, more missiles, more maintainers. The 2025 surge arrives while total headcount is still falling (down 3.2 percent year-over-year) and revenue per employee has climbed to $502,000, up from roughly $360,000 in 2019.

The pandemic inflicted the sharpest single-year contraction in the dataset: 62,200 roles erased in 2020, a 25.6 percent drop. Recovery has been uneven. Headcount ticked up 4.6 percent in 2022, then 1.7 percent in 2023, then a marginal 0.5 percent in 2024, before slipping again in 2025. Each post-COVID gain was smaller than the last. The 187 roles now advertised represent roughly one-tenth of one percent of the current workforce, a fraction of the 1–2 percent annual growth rates seen during the 2018–2019 integration.

What distinguishes this cycle is the composition of demand. The 2003 and 2018 waves hired mechanics, assemblers, and program managers to scale existing production lines. Today's openings cluster around programs that did not exist a decade ago: the Army's Next Generation Short-Range Interceptor (NGSRI), which must replace the Stinger while retaining full interoperability with legacy launchers; the GTF and F135 engine fleets where Pratt & Whitney is deploying AI-assisted borescope inspection software acquired through Amsterdam-based Aiir Innovations; and the modular, automated manufacturing lines Raytheon says will accelerate NGSRI production. These programs require engineers who can move between requirements definition, model-based systems engineering, and cyber-hardened software integration, a profile that barely existed in the 2003 or 2018 talent pools.

The defense labor market has also tightened differently. Today, the cleared population has barely grown while demand from Space Force, hypersonics, and classified AI programs has multiplied. RTX's screening now weights cross-domain fluency and clearance readiness alongside traditional systems credentials, a filter that would have excluded most applicants in prior cycles. The company is not hiring to rebuild headcount; it is hiring to raise the talent density of a workforce that is 26 percent smaller but generating substantially more revenue per person than it did at the 2019 peak.

The Clearance Gate

The requisitions will sit open until the clearance pipeline catches up. Every technical pillar — AI on embedded targets, MOSA-compliant architectures, cyber-hardened models — runs through the same narrow gate: an active TS/SCI or a candidate willing to wait 18 months for one. RTX's screening has made that explicit. The resume filter, the HireVue fork, the 25-question panel — each stage reinforces the same signal. The market has priced it in. The supply chain feels it. The next surge will not be measured in requisition counts but in clearance grants.
