Protege’s Twentyfold 2025 Growth Drives 14 New AI‑Data Openings

By David Yu

The Hiring Wave: 14 Roles, One Bottleneck

Protege posted 14 roles in August 2026 — engineering, product, go-to-market, solutions, finance, and a nascent DataLab function — after a $30 million Series A extension, withprotege.ai reported, brought its total capital to $65 million, unite.ai's data shows. The New York–based platform connecting data holders with model builders is hiring across DataLab, Engineering, Finance, GTM, Product, and Solutions teams. The listings appeared on its Ashby board through August 2026, ten tagged worldwide remote, two added in the last 24 hours. The careers page invites applicants to "create your own job description" alongside structured requisitions.

The funding sequence compressed two years of typical venture pacing into eighteen months:

Round Amount Lead Investor Date Other Participants
Seed $10M 2024 CRV, Bloomberg Beta, Flex Capital, Shaper Capital, Liquid 2 Ventures, SV Angel, Adam D'Angelo
Series A $25M Footwork Aug 2025 CRV, Bloomberg Beta, Flex Capital, Shaper Capital, Liquid 2 Ventures, SV Angel, Adam D'Angelo
Series A Extension $30M Andreessen Horowitz Jan 2026 CRV, Bloomberg Beta, Flex Capital, Shaper Capital, Liquid 2 Ventures, SV Angel, Adam D'Angelo
Total Capital $65M

CRV, Bloomberg Beta, Flex Capital, Shaper Capital, Liquid 2 Ventures, SV Angel, and Adam D'Angelo participated across rounds. Co-founders Bobby Samuels (CEO), Travis May, Engy Ziedan (Chief Scientific Officer), and Richard Ho (CTO) say the capital will deepen product investment, expand into new verticals, and grow enterprise and data-partner relationships. The business grew twentyfold in 2025, withprotege.ai found, and the platform now counts over 100 data partners across healthcare and media, delivering access to 300,000 hours of video, 500,000 hours of audio, billions of clinical notes, and hundreds of millions of medical images.

In 2025 and 2026, Protege launched Audio & Speech and Motion Capture verticals and announced partnerships with Dailymotion for licensed global video, ALLSIDES for 3D digital twins, VLGE AI for world-model training data, HC1 for de-identified lab data, Sunain for multimodal human data, the Austrian Ski Federation for winter-sports video, Autentic for premium global content, Segmed for healthcare data, KC Publications for diabetes research, ToughData for human-skill data, PiZetta Media for emotional narrative storytelling, Render Ready for motion and clothing data, and Loopback Health for EHR data. The job board reflects that surface area: a Forward Deployed Engineer for New Verticals, a Forward Deployed Engineer for Healthcare, a Technical Product Manager for Data Ingestion & Quality, a Strategic Account Manager, and a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer all appeared in the past week. A Financial Operations Associate role also opened.

The company's public messaging frames the surge as answering a structural gap. "Access to the right training data continues to be the biggest bottleneck to AI's progress," Samuels said in the Series A announcement. Footwork's Nikhil Basu Trivedi called Protege "the connective tissue between proprietary data and cutting-edge AI."

How the Screen Works: Values First, Code Second

Protege's hiring criteria are explicit. The company's blog posts and founder interviews show the filter mirrors the constraints governing its product: privacy-first architecture, data-source consent, and a governance model that treats compliance as engineering. Samuels says the company "started a privacy review before we wrote a line of code" and that "privacy is central to what we do." The company uses AI tools like ChatGPT for brainstorming and analysis while keeping final decisions human; Samuels cautions "there's basically nothing folks should do without reviewing" model outputs.

The careers page states: "We're looking for candidates who embody our personal values: integrity, inclusivity, and kindness and who share our professional values: we move fast, we value growth, and we take our work seriously but not ourselves." Technical roles demand production-grade experience with data-quality tooling, lineage systems, and automated governance (the "Steve checking a spreadsheet every Friday" anti-pattern Samuels cites). The platform's four core data offerings include Pre-Training, Post-Training, Fine-Tuning, and Evaluation & Benchmarks using uncontaminated test sets.

Candidate Adaptation: Rewriting the Resume for Ethics

Broader AI-hiring patterns show 99% of talent acquisition teams now use automation and 87% of companies deploy AI in recruiting. Protege's values-first framework sharpens the focus on integrity, inclusivity, kindness, and data-ethics experience alongside technical depth.

Standard advice — use the language of the job description — is baseline. Applicants targeting Forward Deployed Engineer and Technical Product Manager slots can lift phrases from the postings: "data ingestion & quality," "new verticals," "healthcare," "financial operations." Front-loading quantified achievements aligns with research-backed practice: five to seven specific, numbered stories. The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is standard prep; some candidates adapt to SOAR (Situation, Obstacle, Action, Result) to surface ethical or inclusive dimensions.

Technical setup matters. With 58% of companies using AI for video interview analysis, and platforms like HireVue, Pymetrics, and chatbot interviewers proliferating, candidates treat the environment as part of the test. Camera at eye level, stable upload above 10 Mbps, clean background, natural light facing the face are prerequisites. Voice clarity at 150–160 words per minute, minimal filler words, purposeful hand gestures, and sustained eye contact with the lens (not the screen) are drilled in mock sessions. Platform-specific guidance circulates in candidate communities: preview time strategy for HireVue, authenticity over gaming for Pymetrics, clear typing for chatbots.

Values demonstration enters the prep cycle. Candidates research Protege's public writing on data marketplace ethics, then map the stated values (integrity, inclusivity, kindness, move fast, value growth, take work seriously but not ourselves) to concrete career episodes. Kindness stories may cite mentoring junior engineers through burnout or designing on-call rotations that protected sleep schedules. Inclusivity stories may cite bias audits, accessibility audits, or hiring-panel diversification. Integrity stories may describe flagging a data-quality issue that would have shipped otherwise.

Post-interview discipline includes the 24-hour follow-up email, targeted to the recruiter or hiring manager, referencing a specific exchange. Candidates document AI-screen questions, their answers, where they stumbled, and what they'd rephrase. Requesting feedback after a rejection is becoming routine; 78% of candidates who've done AI interviews report positive experiences, and 73% will endure the format for a dream role. Protege's surge makes it a target for a noticeable slice of the AI-data talent pool.

"Instability is causing data professionals to be more cautious," said David Farmer, Harnham's CEO. Senior ML salaries rose 15% with top packages clearing $500,000, yet candidates ask 7% less than in 2023. Only 56% feel secure versus 80% in 2020. Two in three professionals would leave for the right role, up from 40% in 2023.

What Comes Next: Headcount as Roadmap

The roles opened after the a16z-led extension read like a product roadmap rendered in headcount. Forward Deployed Engineers for Healthcare and New Verticals signal the company will embed technical talent inside customer environments. That model mirrors the "internal partner" language from case studies this year: Mahesh Ranganath of Siemens Healthineers said "Protege is like an internal partner for us, helping us dig into exactly what data we need for the specific problem we're trying to solve, rather than simply being a data catalog."

Two other openings point to the platform layer that must scale as the catalog expands: Technical Product Manager for Data Ingestion & Quality and Senior Full Stack Software Engineer. Since the January fundraise, Protege has announced partnerships across new data modalities, from de-identified lab data and licensed video to medical imaging and winter-sports footage. Each partnership adds a new data modality, provenance requirement, and compliance surface.

The Strategic Account Manager opening completes the triad: translating technical capabilities into revenue across healthcare, media, audio/speech, and the newly announced Spatial & Physical Intelligence vertical. Bobby Samuels put the post-fundraise position bluntly on the careers page: "We're fresh off a fundraising round, we have the most powerful data asset in healthcare available to buyers, the most robust offering in media, and growing businesses in audio / speech and in motion capture." Paired with the April launch of Spatial & Physical Intelligence and the August 2025 Audio & Speech debut, the statement shows a deliberate sequencing — healthcare first, media second, emerging physical-AI verticals third — and the hiring plan mirrors it.

The a16z follow-on signals the partnership flywheel is spinning faster than the original model projected. The firm's thesis, echoed in Protege's blog, holds that "the data constraint is the most important problem in scaling AI today." The Financial Operations Associate role hints at finance infrastructure for future diligence. Two new roles posted in the past week; if hiring velocity holds, the openings will be filled before Q3 2026 ends.

The constraint is now Protege's headcount plan: people who can govern, ingest, and ship proprietary data without triggering a lawsuit. If the 14 roles fill by autumn, the bottleneck moves from hiring to execution: onboarding a hospital imaging archive, a media video library, a robotics motion-capture feed, all under one governance framework. That was the thesis investors underwrote. The screen is the filter; the hires are the proof.
