Hercules pays median $250k base for 25 AI roles

By Priya Nair

The Surge: 25 Roles, Three Pillars

Hercules is hiring for 25 roles. The AI app builder, founded by Brendan and Grant after AWS acquired their previous startup Fig and turned it into the Kiro CLI, has concentrated the push into three pillars: six roles in Customer Operations, six in Engineering, Product & Design, and 13 in Growth & Marketing. Backed by a16z with millions in revenue and 200,000-plus users building SaaS, internal tools, marketing pages, ecommerce sites, and mobile apps, the split reveals where bottlenecks sit and where Hercules thinks its next opportunity lives.

The engineering and product roles map the platform's technical priorities. Hercules is hiring an AI Context & Harness Engineer and an AI Context & Harness Product Manager, roles at the intersection of model orchestration and developer experience, alongside Frontend, Full-stack, Infrastructure, and Product Engineers. Operations needs an AI Operations Lead, a Customer Operations Lead, and two tiers of Technical Customer Support. The growth slate is widest: an AI-native Growth Hacker, Channel Partnerships & Affiliates Lead, Content & Social Lead, Creator Partnerships Lead, Developer Relations, Performance Marketing Lead, SEO Content Writer, and Technical Community Lead. Every role is full-time.

Fourteen roles are based in San Francisco (on-site), fourteen are remote across North America, and four are open to a wider band covering North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Australia. Eleven carry no regional qualifier. The distribution suggests a hybrid center of gravity in San Francisco with deliberate reach into North American time zones and a cautious toehold in Europe and Australia.

Two new roles in seven days. Twenty-five open simultaneously. For a company whose mission is enabling 8.5 billion people to build custom software in minutes, the hiring plan is the clearest signal of which capabilities it must own next, and the clearest filter for those capabilities is the written application.

Inside the Screen: Portfolio, Tooling, and Shipped Work

Hercules runs a screening process that starts with a written application. The submission form asks for deployed demos, recordings, or links to personal projects ("short and simple with links") plus a brief description of the tooling and workflows the candidate uses daily: Cursor, Claude Code, plan mode, background agents. Optional artifacts include blog posts, talks, or design docs. The AI Agent Software Engineer job description lists deep experience shipping production agents, strong system-design chops across infrastructure, data modeling, APIs, and monorepos, and the ability to "10x your workflow with AI coding tools while maintaining high code quality." Required stack includes TypeScript, React, Git, containers, Postgres, Redis, and hands-on work with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models. Context engineering (summarization, compression, sub-agents, RAG, prompt caching) and offline/online evaluation pipelines are called out as core competencies.

The job description emphasizes product sense ("experience shipping to customers and iterating based on feedback") and autonomy ("comfortable talking with users, proposing ideas, and shipping autonomously"). Cultural markers ("move with urgency," "strive for excellence," "be hungry") are spelled out in the JD. Candidates who demonstrate shipped product judgment and concrete AI agent work move forward.

The pay package confirms the premium.

Compensation: Flat Top-of-Market, Differentiated by Equity

Hercules puts a $100,000–$250,000 base band on every open role, including AI Context & Harness Engineer, AI Operations Lead, Customer Operations Lead, Technical Customer Support Lead, SEO Content Writer, and AI Context & Harness Product Manager, per its careers page and LinkedIn listings. Zero G Talent's board confirms a salary band typically $80k–$250k, Zero G Talent's board's data shows (median $250k, as Zero G Talent's board reported) across 25 salaried roles, per Zero G Talent's board's figures, with two new listings added in the past week, Zero G Talent's board found: Customer Operations Lead and AI Operations Lead, both remote North America at $100,000–$250,000.

Role (Hercules, 2026) Base Range Equity Source
AI Context & Harness Engineer $100k–$250k Variable LinkedIn, careers page
AI Operations Lead $100k–$250k Variable Zero G Talent board
Customer Operations Lead $100k–$250k Variable Zero G Talent board
Technical Customer Support Lead $100k–$250k Variable careers page
SEO Content Writer $100k–$250k Variable careers page
AI Context & Harness Product Manager $100k–$250k Variable LinkedIn, careers page

The breadth of that band, spanning individual-contributor engineering through product and operations, signals a deliberate compression strategy. Rather than tiering cash by function, Hercules pays a flat top-of-market base and differentiates through equity and scope. Industry reporting shows a shortage of qualified AI engineers and escalating corporate reliance on AI strategy are pushing compensation to historic highs. H-1B disclosure analysis shows AI startups offering base salaries well into the upper six figures to win talent. Hercules' $250k ceiling matches the entry point for staff-level roles at OpenAI and Anthropic, where posted ranges reach $230k–$385k and $200k–$330k respectively.

Applicant volume tells the same story. Two AI Context & Harness Engineer postings on LinkedIn drew 153 and 52 applicants respectively within three months of going live. A referral bonus that doubles interview odds, disclosed in the same listings, signals Hercules knows its pipeline is competitive. The company's in-office preference (San Francisco, Kearny and Bush) and US-time-zone requirement for remote exceptions narrow the addressable pool further.

Unlimited AI token budgets, daily catered meals, and a "take what you need" vacation policy round out a package designed to compete with perks at better-capitalized labs. The guarantee — "you will do the best work of your career here" — is a retention bet: if the work isn't exceptional, the compensation rationale collapses.

For candidates, the message is clear. Hercules pays like a frontier lab but hires like a product company — end-to-end ownership, shipping velocity, and context-harness expertise priced at a premium. The market is adjusting. Candidates and coaches are adjusting accordingly.

Reactions: Candidates, Coaches, Analysts — and a Name Collision

Glassdoor reviews for Hercules-branded entities paint a fragmented picture. Hercules Capital shows 14 interview reviews and 14 posted questions; Hercules Industries lists three of each. The volume is low enough that any single review can skew perception, and the entities themselves do not map to the AI platform currently hiring. Hercules Industries, based in Clearwater, Florida and Louisville, Kentucky, publishes a Dealer Advisor portal tracking the 2025 transition from R-410A to R-454B refrigerant across air conditioners, heat pumps, coils, air handlers, gas furnaces, and residential package units. Its roadmap PDFs detail SKU counts, SEER ratings, emissions profiles, capacity shifts, and configuration changes for Armstrong and Concord product lines. It runs promotions on Q-Series rooftop units and a redesigned dealer website with unified login. None of this intersects with the AI company's product, hiring, or strategy. Hercules Capital (HTGC) is a separate entity again: the largest business development company focused on venture lending. In 2024 it participated in a $125 million growth financing for Semperis alongside J.P. Morgan. That capital deployment and the BDC's portfolio dynamics are not this story. The AI company Hercules has not announced any financing round, debt facility, or capital partnership in the research provided.

Career coaches tracking the space advise candidates to treat pattern over outlier: five to fifteen similar negative reviews signal a legitimate concern; one or two often reflect a disgruntled exit. Timestamps matter: a cluster from 24 months ago may not reflect current leadership or culture, especially in a sector where organizational change moves fast. The prevailing strategy is to delay raising Glassdoor findings until leverage exists, typically after a hiring manager has signaled strong interest. Bringing up critical reviews in a first conversation with a recruiter can flag a candidate as high-friction before fit is established. The recommended framing is solution-oriented: "I'm pragmatic in my decision-making and saw some negative reviews around culture. What has the organization done to address this, and has it been successful?" That phrasing shifts the exchange from confrontation to due diligence and lets the hiring manager's reaction (defensive, dismissive, or transparent) become its own data point.

Industry analysts are watching the hiring wave. Staffing Industry Analysts featured Hercules in a piece outlining a 10-point scorecard for evaluating AI vendor readiness, ROI, data maturity, and integration risk — a signal that the firm's buying criteria are being treated as a benchmark. Hercules also sponsored the Staffing Industry Report (EMEA) on buyer challenges and opportunities, placing its name alongside the conversation shaping procurement priorities. Those moves show the company is not just hiring but positioning its evaluation framework as a reference point for the broader market.

On the ground, first-party board data shows the 25 salaried roles with a median band of $250,000 and the two new postings in the past week. That velocity, combined with analyst attention, is feeding a feedback loop: candidates tailor portfolios toward end-to-end AI product evidence, reviewers scrutinize culture signals more deliberately, and competing platforms adjust their own screens to match the emerging standard. The ripple effects are shaping hiring decisions as the market moves further into 2026. The application remains the gate.

The Gate

Candidates still submit portfolios with deployed demos, recordings, and links to personal projects. They describe the tooling and workflows they use daily: Hercules evaluates how they think — how they simplify, how they communicate, how they ship. The rest of the market is taking notes. The portfolio-first screen is the standard now.
