A supersonic startup built a flight-capable engine in three months. Now it has two years to put that engine in the air — and the team that got it this far isn't big enough to finish.

Astro Mechanica is staffing 41 open roles across engineering, manufacturing, and operations. The push follows a $27 million Series A closed in early 2026. Andreessen Horowitz and Lower Carbon Capital led; United Airlines Ventures followed with a strategic stake, calling the Duality™ propulsion system "a novel approach to the engine problem." The capital bought runway. The timeline bought urgency. Founder Ian Brooke has set a public target: engine in the air within two years. That deadline turns every open requisition into a bottleneck.

The Duality™ system is why the timeline is this tight. Traditional aerospace designs the airframe first, then shops for an engine that fits. Brooke's team inverted the sequence: they built the propulsion system first, then designed the aircraft around it. The engine combines turbine and ramjet cycles in a single core, aiming for 787-level fuel efficiency at four times the speed. "We're not looking for 1 to 2% gains," Brooke said in a May 2026 interview. "We are really looking at revolutionary gains here." Integrating engine and airframe development in-house means the company needs engineers who can move across disciplinary boundaries (structures, thermals, controls, manufacturing) without waiting for a handoff.

That approach has already compressed development cycles. A proof-of-concept engine ran in two months. A flight-capable version followed in three. The first test flight is the next milestone. But the roadmap beyond demands scale: three civil aircraft sizes, starting with a five-passenger, 5,000-nautical-mile jet targeting a $5,000 operating cost per trip. A 30-passenger variant comes next, then a 100-passenger airliner. Brooke frames the progression like Tesla's — Roadster to Model 3 — with the end goal a half-trillion-dollar annual market for supersonic travel, as Brooke reported in a S3 | Science, Startups, & Stories interview.

Culture and Structure: Flat Hierarchy, Generalist Depth

Astro Mechanica describes itself in job postings as a team of "generalists with specialist depth, united by a flat structure and a shared obsession with building things that work well. We move fast, stay pragmatic, and let engineering excellence speak louder than hierarchy." That sentence, pulled from a BuiltIn listing for a Structures Design Engineer II role, is the company's cultural constitution, and it doubles as a screening filter. At 52 employees, the organization is small enough that every hire either reinforces or erodes the operating model.

Flat hierarchy here does not mean consensus-driven. Brooke frames it as a bet: "If you find the best people and give them free rein to do their job, you will move more quickly." The alternative (the legacy aerospace model) relies on process gates that "when followed will produce a good product" but at the cost of "a lot of time, a lot of money and things move really slowly." Astro Mechanica replaces process with testing volume: "The way we make sure we have a good safe thing at the end is by doing just an extreme amount of testing."

The generalist-with-specialist-depth formulation is deliberate. Brooke recounts an early intuition to "hire from rocketry, not from airplanes" because "it was very hard to get airplane people to move fast because they're optimizing for human safety... But rockets, the last thing you do is add a person. So it's easier to take rocket people who know how to go fast and teach them about airplanes than teach airplane people how to go fast." That hiring logic shapes the talent pool: the company wants engineers who can traverse propulsion, structures, avionics, and manufacturing without waiting for a handoff. The mindset filter is explicit. "The default on everything is that it doesn't work... What you need to focus on is what are the ways that it can work. How do we make that happen? That is such a different frame of mind that you need to find in people."

In-office presence five days a week is non-negotiable, listed as "an essential part of the employee's role" to "foster collaboration and strengthen our company culture."

Benefits reflect the same philosophy. Brooke's stated ambition — "I also just really want this to be the place for truly the sharpest. This is like old NASA where you're like this is humanity's best" — sets a cultural bar the screening process is built to enforce.

What the Screen Looks Like: Technical Assessments and Systems Thinking

Astro Mechanica's interview process rests on a single premise: credentials are the floor, not the ceiling. The company's technical recruiter role (currently open) explicitly calls for "strong sourcing and assessment skills for candidates whose value is demonstrated through hands-on work, operational ownership, and complex trade studies, not just credentials." That mandate shapes every screen.

The recruiter job description lists "propulsion, testing, manufacturing, or experimental engineering roles" as priority domains. Glassdoor data shows 105 interview questions and 96 reviews for "ASTRO" and another 10 for "Astro," suggesting the process is consistent enough to generate a pattern but rigorous enough to produce variance. The company's board lists the same 41 salaried roles; the two roles added in the past week (Head of People and Director of Manufacturing) signal that the screening infrastructure itself is scaling.

That language mirrors Brooke's description of the Duality™ program: the engine architecture was derived from first-principles fuel-efficiency work, not from an existing airframe. Engineers at Astro therefore own the propulsion system's configuration and performance across the full cycle: early prototype, flight-qualification, vehicle integration, and aircraft flight test. The Mission Systems Lead extends that ownership to the vehicle level, coordinating across subsystems in a flat hierarchy where "engineering excellence speaks louder than hierarchy."

Design: hardware-ready detail and review discipline. The Entry-Level Propulsion Design Engineer posting adds a layer of delivery rigor: "present design reviews and solicit feedback from stakeholders," "assemble prototypes firsthand, design complementary tooling, establish work instructions." This is not a pure CAD role; the designer is expected to walk the build, specify the fixturing, and write the work instructions a technician will follow. Brooke noted of his co-founder Ian that he "could literally build these things himself."

Manufacturing: rapid-iteration fabrication and test-facility ownership. The Director of Manufacturing and Propulsion Technician listings reveal a shop floor that runs on rocket-program tempo. Technicians "operate manual machine shop equipment (drills, cutting tools, mills, lathes)," "fabricate with sheet metal (forming, shearing, rolling, stamping)," and perform "material joining (GTAW welding, brazing, soldering, mechanical fastening)." They also "conduct hardware test and analyze data to verify requirements and performance metrics," "diagnose hardware problems efficiently and determine corrective actions," and "maintain test facility operations and maintenance, troubleshoot problems, site cleanliness." The posting explicitly calls for collaboration "with design and engineering teams to optimize manufacturability, ensure structural integrity, and refine fabrication processes." The feedback loop — technician finds a weld access issue, feeds it back to design, design updates the model — is the operational expression of the company's "test like you fly" mantra.

Candidate Response and Market Impact

Ashby, Astro's ATS, surfaces applications in arrival order, and tracking services like Scoutify push new postings within minutes, making Wednesday (when half of new roles appear) a de facto hiring day. Scoutify data shows 15 open positions in San Francisco, two remote, zero hybrid.
