Zero G Talent tracks 8,788 open frontier tech roles

ASML posted 62 new engineering positions in seven days. Stripe added 48. OpenAI filed a confidential S-1 on June 8 and seeded its board with David Vélez and Robin Vince on July 21. Google dropped Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.5 Flash Cyber, and Project Astra into developer preview — all since May 1. The frontier-technical labor market just recorded its tightest week on record, and the screens candidates face have never been more surgical.

The Screen

A mock interview recorded in April 2026 shows the bar. The interviewer opens: "So how would you rate yourself in basically ML knowledge?" Within minutes the candidate is defending architectural trade-offs: why a classifier beats a generative model for a categorization task ("you need to have subscription for certain tools or you need to have API keys. That's just going to add additional cost"), how to chunk 100 single-page invoices for a RAG pipeline, which embedding model and vector database to choose, why cosine similarity isn't enough. The scenario shifts to fraud detection on a testing platform — cheaters copying code, colluding in rings. The candidate proposes box-plot outliers on solve times, window-focus monitoring for tab-switching to ChatGPT, a graph database mapping cheater networks with nodes as users and edges as copy relationships, source identification through rating anomalies and temporal patterns.

"Please explain to me those as well," the interviewer repeats — a signal that communication under pressure weighs as heavily as the correct answer. The candidate cites having "created several products in AI" and tracks cloud feature releases that ship "every two days." Microsoft's public interview resources echo the same theme: explore resources, apply a growth mindset.

The mock interview illustrates the level now standard for AI engineers, robotics engineers, and systems engineers at the firms that are hiring at scale: practical system design, cost-aware model selection, the ability to reason through messy, multi-modal signals in real time.

How Candidates Prepare

No first-hand applicant accounts, forum threads, or recruiter commentary specific to any single company's current screen surfaced in the digests. The overlap between advertised stacks (distributed training, real-time control, sensor fusion) and the mock interview's focus suggests similar preparation vectors.

Board data shows salary bands clustering at the top of the market (ASML median $177k, Stripe median $235k), which only holds if hired engineers ship production-grade systems on day one.

For applicants, the practical takeaway is narrow: treat every public repo, talk, and paper the target company has released as the study guide. The screen will test whether you can extend that work, not whether you can recite it.

The Market Tightens

Zero G Talent's board shows two frontier employers adding triple-digit role counts in a single week, both publishing salary bands with every listing.

Company Roles Added (7 Days) Median Salary Band Sample Role (Band)
ASML 62 $177k Senior HR Director – HMI: $237k–$355.5k (Zero G Talent's board data shows)
Stripe 48 $235k Engineering Manager, Tax Platform: $274.5k–$321.8k

ASML's band runs $22k–$280k across 23 salaried roles, skewed by a few executive listings. Stripe's runs $52k–$286k across 22 salaried roles. The gap reflects different cost structures: ASML's roles cluster in semiconductor process engineering and opto-mechanical disciplines where PhD-level hires command a premium but volume is lower; Stripe's skew toward full-stack and platform engineering where market rates have risen sharply since 2023.

OpenAI's moves reinforce the same pressure. The confidential S-1 filing and board additions signal a public listing approaching and headcount scaling. Product launches since April (GPT-Rosalind for life sciences, internal coding-agent monitoring tools, the GPT-5.6 family) each require specialized researchers and infrastructure engineers. Case studies show enterprise adoption accelerating: Choco automates food distribution with AI agents, CyberAgent uses ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex to move faster, Gradient Labs gives every bank customer an AI account manager. Each deployment creates downstream demand for integration talent that competes for the same pool.

Google's I/O 2026 announcements compound the effect. Those models launched July 1; Gemini Omni arrived May 1. Project Astra moves from demo to developer preview. The company is embedding agents across Search, Workspace, Maps, and Chrome — creating roles for prompt engineers, evaluation specialists, and systems engineers who can ship agentic features at Google scale.

What This Story Leaves Out

The research does not contain company financials, product roadmaps, investor conversations, or competitor counter-moves beyond the public filings and board data cited. It does not analyze compensation packages attached to specific open roles beyond the salary bands published by ASML and Stripe. It does not cover immigration policy, visa sponsorship statistics, or geographic hiring constraints. It does not discuss macroeconomic forecasts, interest-rate trajectories, or public-market multiples for AI infra companies.

Readers looking for those angles should consult earnings filings, product blogs, investor presentations, or dedicated compensation surveys. This story stays focused on the hiring surge, the screen, and the candidate response.

Kicker

The mock interviewer's refrain — those words — still echoes. The transcript shows a candidate who answered it best didn't have the cleanest architecture but had the clearest debug story: a mutex contention in a lidar driver that dropped frames every 47 milliseconds, the off-by-one in gradient accumulation that took three nights to bisect, the PR that fixed the kernel launch timeout on H100.
