Two positions were added in the past week alone, Zero G Talent's data shows. The openings cluster in Scotts Valley and read like a productization checklist, Zero G Talent's figures put the bands as follows: a Head of Sales (200,000–240,000 USD/year), a Staff Product Manager for Business Applications (180,000–200,000), an Automation & Controls Engineering Manager (170,000–220,000), and three deep technical tracks: Staff/Senior Staff Firmware Integration Engineer (170,000–240,000), Electronics Design Engineer (150,000–200,000), and Senior/Staff Power Electronics Engineer (120,000–200,000).

That spread is deliberate. The firmware integration role sits at the intersection of embedded software and power hardware. The power electronics and electronics design positions target the core energy-conversion stack. The automation manager and product manager roles imply a shift from low-volume builds to repeatable manufacturing and customer-facing deployment. The sales lead confirms a commercial timeline is active.

All six highlighted roles carry "Staff" or "Senior/Staff" designations. Heron is not backfilling junior seats — it is hiring architects who can define interfaces across disciplines and own subsystems through qualification. The salary bands reinforce the point: the top of the firmware integration range matches the Head of Sales ceiling, a rare parity that signals the company values system-level technical leadership as highly as revenue ownership.

Heron's Scotts Valley site sits within commuting range of both Silicon Valley firmware talent and the Central Coast power-electronics cluster around Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, giving the company access to two distinct labor pools without requiring relocation packages. The company lists 43 employees and was founded in 2024, per Built In. Crunchbase's growth score of 91, updated July 3, 2025, signals investor expectations of rapid scaling.

Heron Power develops industrial power electronics purpose-built for the 21st-century grid, helping the electricity sector grow faster with scalable, reliable and software-integrated infrastructure. Its Heron Link product line includes an integrated solid-state transformer plus SuperBBU solution for AI and hyperscale data centers, and an integrated solid-state transformer and inverter in one infinitely scalable platform for solar and storage. The leadership team has shipped gigawatts of power conversion hardware over the past decade, and an LG partnership hints at supply-chain and co-development roles.

Market Context

Heron's slate of openings reads like a microcosm of the skills the entire clean energy sector is chasing. The 2024 Global Energy Talent Index reports that roughly half of renewables professionals saw a pay rise in the past year, up from 47 percent a year earlier, and one in four logged increases of five percent or more. Among engineers specifically, 54 percent reported a raise. Hiring managers are even more bullish: 62 percent saw their own compensation climb, with one in three notching gains above five percent.

The roles themselves map directly to the technology categories posting the fastest growth. Electric power generation jobs grew 4.0 percent in 2023, nearly double the overall U.S. rate, with clean energy technologies delivering 79 percent of net new employment. Transmission, distribution, and storage added 52,000 net jobs at a 3.8 percent clip, accelerating from 2.2 percent in 2022. Battery storage alone grew 3.8 percent. Heron's search for a Senior/Staff Power Electronics Engineer and an Automation & Controls Engineering Manager sits squarely in that expansion. The Staff/Senior Staff Firmware Integration Engineer role reflects the converging demand for embedded software and grid-edge intelligence — a convergence the GETI survey captures in its finding that one in three renewables workers now use AI in their roles, the highest proportion of any energy sector.

Competition for this talent is fierce. ManpowerGroup's 2024 Talent Shortage survey puts Energy & Utilities at a 71 percent hiring difficulty rate; the U.S. overall sits at 70 percent. The DOE's employer survey confirms the pressure: three in four energy employers reported at least "some difficulty" finding qualified workers in 2023, and motor vehicle (90 percent) and electric power generation (85 percent) employers topped the difficulty rankings. Nearly half of motor vehicle employers and 43 percent of energy efficiency employers called it "very difficult." Unionized firms fared better (only 24 percent reported "very difficult" hiring versus 40 percent for non-union), but the gap narrowed only slightly year over year.

That pressure shows up in worker mobility. GETI data reveals one in three renewables professionals have been headhunted six or more times in the past year; 13 percent fielded more than 16 approaches. Roughly a quarter say over half of those approaches came from outside their current industry or expertise. Technology has risen to a top outside-industry destination at 29 percent, up from 25 percent. Eighty-eight percent of renewables workers are open to switching jobs, driven by career progression and broader industry interest. Power generation (43 percent) has just edged out oil and gas (42 percent) as the preferred sector for movers.

Heron's Scotts Valley location places it in a Bay Area labor market where the DOE reports California held 23,800 energy services jobs as of the latest count, sixth among top energy states but embedded in a region where tech-sector compensation sets the floor. The company's salary bands reflect that reality. They also reflect a structural shift: unionization in clean energy hit 12.4 percent in 2023, surpassing traditional energy for the first time, driven by construction and utility growth. Union employers were 50 percent more likely to mandate diversity and inclusion training (36 percent vs. 24 percent) and more likely to run targeted programs for women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ hires.

The skills mismatch underneath the headlines is widening. Employers project programming/software engineering and IT (27 and 26 percent) as their top needs, followed by machine learning (26 percent), cyber security (24 percent), and data science (24 percent). Yet professionals rank IT and cyber security eighth and ninth in their own upskilling priorities, while machine learning, data science, and programming top their lists. Robotics skills sit at 23 percent anticipated demand but only 16 percent of workers are moving toward them. Heron's firmware and automation roles sit at the intersection of those gaps — exactly where the market is tightest and the compensation premium is highest.

What Comes Next

Heron Power's headcount sits at 43 as of late 2025, but the velocity of new postings suggests that number will look quaint within quarters. The company added two roles in a single week this summer (Head of Sales and Staff Firmware Integration Engineer), and that metric signals rapid scaling. The board's median salary already reflects a senior-heavy team; the next wave will likely widen the pyramid.

The product roadmap dictates the hiring roadmap. Heron's announcement of next-generation power infrastructure for AI data centers (specifically the Heron Link solid-state transformer plus SuperBBU) points to a cluster of roles that barely exist today: high-voltage SiC/SiC module packaging engineers, megawatt-scale thermal architects, and firmware leads who can close the loop between converter-level controls and rack-level power management. The same platform targets solar-plus-storage with an integrated solid-state transformer-inverter, which will pull in PV conversion specialists fluent in MPPT and arc-fault detection at utility scale.

Grid-forming and grid-healing functionality, explicitly called out in the current modeling-integration job description, will become a hiring category of its own. IEEE 2800 and UL 1741 compliance is no longer a checkbox — it's a design driver. Candidates who have shepherded RMS (PSS/E, PSLF) and EMT (PSCAD, PowerFactory) models through interconnection studies for multi-hundred-megawatt projects will command a premium. So will engineers who can write the C code that implements those grid-support functions on the same DSP that runs the inner current loop.

Software-defined power electronics is the through-line. The job description demands CI/CD experience for embedded targets, automated HiL test-report generation, and fleet-data analysis for failure mitigation. That triad — continuous integration, hardware-in-the-loop automation, and operational data loops — will define the next five hires. Expect titles like "Embedded CI/CD Engineer," "HiL Systems Architect," and "Fleet Analytics Lead" to appear on the careers page before the year ends.

Manufacturing test is the sleeper. "Iterate quickly, test to failure, and learn fast" is a cultural axiom at Heron, and the Automation & Controls Engineering Manager role signals investment in factory acceptance test infrastructure. Engineers who can design end-of-line testers that stress a solid-state transformer through fault-ride-through transients (and automate the data review) will bridge the gap between prototype and volume.

The LG partnership does so as well: mechanical integration engineers who can package Heron's power stack inside LG's enclosure standards, and supply-chain program managers fluent in automotive-grade SiC procurement.

Heron's leadership team has done so. They know the trajectory: the first 50 hires build the product; the next 200 build the factory and the field-support organization.
