A robotics company that grew from a college project to a 400 percent expansion on U.S. Navy surface fleets in a single year, according to Business Wire, doesn't run on standard operating procedures. The question is what replaces them.

Gecko Robotics operates from Pittsburgh, where its hardware and core software teams sit, while running forward-deployed operations out of New York City and a contracts capture function in Washington, D.C. Job postings on Zero G Talent's board show the split: Deployment Leads for Navy Manufacturing in Pittsburgh and Oil & Gas in New York, Forward Deployed Engineers in New York, a Software Engineer on the Data Platform in New York, a Product Designer for Manufacturing and Defense in Pittsburgh, and a Contracts Capture Strategist in D.C. That distribution maps the org chart: a hardware-and-platform core in Pittsburgh, customer-facing deployment teams embedded at shipyards and energy sites, and a federal-sales engine in the capital.

Decision-making authority traces to Jake Loosararian, who founded the company in 2013 after building the first wall-climbing robot for a power plant while at Grove City College. He cycled through co-founders and worked without pay for years before the Navy partnership landed in 2023. In a 2024 press release he framed the mission directly: "Making sure the brave men and women of the U.S. Navy have the tools they need to perform their vital missions safely and effectively is the perfect example of what our team wakes up every morning focused on." That founder-led, mission-first framing acts as the de facto operating principle. When the Navy added 18 Pacific Fleet ships under a five-year contract with an initial $54 million award in March 2026, and expanded scope to include the first aircraft carrier that fall, the prioritization signal came from the top.

The tempo is set by external deadlines, not internal sprints. The Columbia-class submarine program carries a $132 billion price tag, as Business Wire's data shows, and a national-security timeline; the Chief of Naval Operations has targeted 80 percent fleet readiness by 2027. Gecko's robots now capture 4.2 million data points per asset where traditional methods captured fewer than 100, Business Wire found, and early destroyer deployments cut three months from planning cycles. That throughput demand means deployment leads and forward-deployed engineers operate with high autonomy at shipyards — they have to, because the alternative is a vessel stuck in drydock. The Cantilever platform ingests the robot data and feeds maintenance planners.

Cross-functional ownership is forced by the product: a robot that climbs a hull, scans welds, and writes to a digital twin requires mechanical, electrical, perception, and backend engineers to ship together. The contract structure (a five-year vehicle other services can tap) and the year-over-year growth imply a culture that defaults to the people closest to the problem making the call.

What's not in the public record: internal meeting cadences, how technical debt gets prioritized against new Navy requirements, whether the Pittsburgh/New York/D.C. split creates friction, or how the company onboards engineers into regulated defense work. Values and operating principles

Gecko Robotics does not publish a polished values page. Its operating principles surface in how founder Jake Loosararian describes the business — repeatedly, on the record — and in the structural choices those descriptions imply. The through-line is a rejection of Silicon Valley's default playbook: no pure-software margins, no consumer-scale user growth, no "move fast and break things" in facilities where breaking things means a refinery shutdown or a bridge closure.

The founding mission, "diagnosing the health of the built world," originated in a college dorm room and has not shifted. Loosararian frames it as a response to neglect: "We go into these old sectors that Silicon Valley has very much forgotten about." That sentence functions as both strategy and cultural filter. It tells candidates the work lives in oil refineries, naval shipyards, and power plants, not in a San Francisco loft. It also sets the tempo: customers buy an operating platform called Cantilever, not a robot. "They don't buy the robot. They don't buy any of that. It all feeds into the outcomes that we are to deliver with the operating platform." The principle is outcome ownership — hardware, software, sensors, and deployment are inseparable because the customer pays for uptime and efficiency, not for a demo.

Physical intelligence is the technical moat and the hiring signal. Loosararian argues that "there's very little physical intelligence. And so we are the leading company as it relates to creating that which enables a moat for our artificial intelligence to be exceptionally better than those are coming with a software only solution." In practice, that means the deployment leads on the job board (Navy Manufacturing in Pittsburgh, Oil & Gas in New York) are the data-generating engine. The principle: no physical operations, no defensible AI.

Energy as the binding constraint shapes prioritization. "Energy is the constraint. And so I should be able to unlock energy, not always the other way around." Loosararian cites a customer running 5 percent of U.S. power where five deployments improved heat rate at natural gas plants, extrapolating to roughly ten gigawatts of additional capacity without new construction. The operating principle is measurable infrastructure leverage: if a feature does not move heat rate, CapEx, or throughput, it does not ship.

Pragmatism over hype appears in the phrase "pragmatic artificial intelligence robotics" and in the nine-month horizon Loosararian gave for "scaling and increasing the amounts of fuel to fight that to that fire." The company raised at a $1.35 billion valuation as of September 2025 but describes the next phase in quarters, not years. That tempo, driven by quarterly unveilings with the largest oil and gas operators and manufacturing expansions into steel and copper, is the cadence the culture runs on.

A final principle emerges in how the platform treats the workforce on site: "Enable the folks on the ground to become not just blue collar workers, but engineers, because they can use the alarm that we have inside of Cantilever to understand what sort of decisions to make." The software is designed to be operated by technicians, not only by PhDs. That choice cascades into product decisions and into the profile of the forward-deployed engineers who ship updates from the field.

The tension is visible: the same intensity that produces 20 percent CapEx reductions and 5–15 percent efficiency gains demands deployment leads who can translate a heat-rate model into a valve-turning procedure on site. The principles are coherent; the question the next section answers is who sustains them.

What the hiring bar selects for

Gecko Robotics received more than 40,000 applications for 32 internship roles in 2024. That works out to a 0.08 percent hire rate — one person for every 1,254 applicants. By comparison, Harvard accepted 3.19 percent of its class of 2026, and Goldman Sachs hired roughly 0.9 percent of its internship candidates last year, Business Insider reported. The company says a human reads every application. Hiring staff pay extra attention to the open-ended responses about why the candidate wants to work at Gecko.

CEO Jake Loosararian has spelled out what his team filters for. First: excitement about working in person and a willingness to "get their boots dirty." Second: passion for the actual work: inspecting critical infrastructure with robots, not building software in a vacuum. He explicitly looks for candidates who fall outside traditional norms and who have "experience going through hard things." In interviews he asks about the most difficult career experience the applicant has faced, a product they built, or a plan they executed, and how it turned out. The outcome doesn't matter. He wants to see accountability and the ability to learn from mistakes.

"Obviously I want people who are competent but also those who are able to take really high ownership of what they're trying to accomplish," Loosararian told Fortune. "Building robots isn't perfect, especially when you're not building them for a lab, so I want people who are comfortable with being uncomfortable because that's how innovation happens."

That comfort with discomfort extends to the interview process itself. For engineering internships, Loosararian insists candidates use AI agents during coding tests. He says it better mimics how the work actually gets done. The signal he's after isn't raw coding speed — it's judgment in using the tools the team uses daily.

Degrees are optional. "We have a lot of employees that don't have college degrees who are geniuses in their fields," he said. "I care about the decision you made, to either go to college or not go to college and why. That's what I test for." The hiring bar selects for intentionality: people who chose their path, whatever it was, and can articulate the reasoning.

Loosararian ties the internship's competitiveness to the nature of the experience. "It's not for everyone, but what we offer is a dose of reality around how the real world works," he said. "People aren't stuck sitting behind their desks, so as a young kid you get to go out and get your boots dirty." The same logic applies to full-time roles. The compensation reflects the demand for engineers who can operate in the field, talk to customers, and own outcomes end to end.

The through-line is ownership. Gecko hires people who have already proven they can drive something hard from start to finish, explain what went wrong, and adapt. The selectivity isn't prestige filtering — it's a screen for the specific mix of field readiness, technical depth, and accountability the work requires.

What the employee-experience data shows — and doesn't

If you are evaluating Gecko Robotics, treat the job-board salary bands as the hardest verified numbers available, and supplement them with direct outreach to current employees on LinkedIn or at industry conferences such as AUVSI Xponential or the Navy's Sea-Air-Space exposition. Ask directly about travel expectations, on-call rotations, and how cross-functional ownership plays out when a robot is on a Navy ship versus in a Pittsburgh lab.

The company's public materials emphasize "protecting critical infrastructure" and "wall-climbing robots," language that attracts mission-oriented engineers. But the lived reality of that mission, the support structure around it, and the boundary between ownership and overload remain undocumented in the available research. What the reporting does confirm is the structural logic: a founder who sets tempo from the top, a platform that only works when hardware and software ship together, and a hiring filter that selects for people who have already chosen the hard path. The culture isn't written on a wall.
