SPARC Progress Triggers Targeted Hiring for Licensed Operators

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is advancing its SPARC tokamak toward commissioning at its Devens, Massachusetts campus, creating urgent demand for licensed fusion facility operators. The company, founded in 2018 as an MIT spin-off, has grown to over 1,000 employees as of 2025 and is actively hiring for roles including Shift Operators for SPARC across multiple shifts.

Nuclear Regulatory Pathways Define Operator Qualification Standards

The regulatory framework for fusion facilities is evolving. In 2023, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted unanimously to regulate commercial fusion power plants under a byproduct materials framework (10 CFR Part 30) rather than nuclear fission power plant rules. The ADVANCE Act codified this decision in July 2024.

Massachusetts, an Agreement State, oversees radioactive material handling at the CFS facility. On October 24, 2024, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted CFS a broad-scope radioactive materials license for SPARC — a key milestone toward operating the world's first commercially relevant net energy fusion machine. Corinne Mitchell, Director of Radiation Protection at CFS, stated: "This license from Massachusetts proves we can satisfy regulators' safety requirements that protect employees, the public, and the environment."

CFS maintains a dedicated radiation protection team of health physicists and radiological engineers with experience spanning industry, academia, licensing, and regulatory compliance. The company works closely with the Massachusetts Radiation Control Program as it moves from construction to operation.

The NRC's proposed Part 30 fusion-specific application requirements would ask applicants to provide descriptions of machine radiation safety organization and procedures, operating and emergency protocols, training programs, inspection and maintenance plans, and methodologies for tracking radioactive material inventories.

Other fusion companies in Agreement States include Type One Energy in Tennessee (developing a modular stellarator at TVA's former Bull Run coal plant) and Helion Energy in Washington (developing a pulsed field-reversed configuration device). The NRC and Agreement States are working toward a coherent, risk-informed regulatory approach as fusion technologies progress toward deployment.

Cryogenic and Radiation Safety Expertise Becomes Critical Hiring Filter

SPARC uses yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) high-temperature superconducting magnets that retain superconductivity at temperatures as high as 77 K (optimally at 10 K). The magnets generate a 12.2 T magnetic field — a record 20 T was demonstrated in a prototype test in September 2021. SPARC will include 18 toroidal field magnets, each composed of 16 layers of HTS tape.

The first of 18 toroidal field magnets was completed and placed on an assembly jig in January 2026. The building housing SPARC in Devens was largely completed by November 2024, with assembly in early stages. SPARC is targeted to begin operations in 2026, with the goal of demonstrating net power (Q > 1) in 2027.

The high-field, compact design presents unique cryogenic and radiation safety challenges. Diagnostics for SPARC-like tokamaks must account for neutron flux of ~10¹⁸ n/m²/s at the outer midplane of the first wall, with total neutron fluence of ~3×10²² n/m² over ~3,000 10-second D-T pulses. Neutron diagnostics, interferometry-polarimetry, Thomson scattering, X-ray imaging crystal spectrometry, and passive radiation monitoring all require specialized expertise.

Structural integrity assessments for fusion reactor first wall and blanket components focus on accumulation of plastic strain damage and fracture mechanics principles to assess radiation effects on mechanical properties — knowledge areas with limited existing workforce.

Talent Shortage Drives CFS to Expand Workforce Development

CFS has raised total capital, including a Series B in November 2021, Series B2 in August 2025, and a raise announced in July 2026. Investors include Eni, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Temasek, Equinor, Devonshire Investors, Google, and NVIDIA.

The company announced plans in 2024 to build the world's first grid-scale commercial fusion power plant (ARC) at the James River Industrial Center in Chesterfield County, Virginia, targeting ~400 MWe by the early 2030s. Google signed a direct corporate power purchase agreement for 200 MW from ARC in July 2025. Eni signed a power purchase agreement in September 2025. CFS became the first fusion company to apply to PJM Interconnection (the largest U.S. wholesale electricity market) in April 2026.

CFS partners with MIT on research and development, with the SPARC team growing to 270 members during magnet development. The company collaborates with Siemens and NVIDIA on AI-powered digital twins, and signed a collaborative research agreement with A*STAR in Singapore to advance fusion supply chain capabilities (May 2026). CFS was named the first international partner in UKAEA's LIBRTI program (July 2026).

The DOE's Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program granted CFS additional funding in May 2023 along with seven other U.S. companies. The DOE's Fusion Science & Technology Roadmap charts a path for federal support to accelerate commercial fusion by the mid-2030s, identifying critical workforce gaps.
