Founded in 2017 by engineers from MIT and Stanford, Skylo built a software-defined network layer that turns existing geostationary satellites into functional cell towers. The salary band across 30 salaried roles runs $124k–$240k (median $165k), with senior technical leadership roles posting $215k–$270k.

What distinguishes the roster is the blend: telecom veterans who understand 3GPP standards sitting beside satellite systems engineers who know link budgets and orbital mechanics. The product — a standardized non-terrestrial network layer — demands both.

Compensation at a glance

Skylo's pay sits at the intersection of deep-tech hardware premiums and early-stage equity upside. The clearest signal comes from roles posted to Zero G Talent's board: a live band of $124k–$240k base with a $165k median across 30 salaried listings, a range that aligns with, but tightens, the wider spreads reported by third-party aggregators.

Salary.com's algorithmic estimate puts the U.S. average at $114,762 with a $101k–$129k range, but the site explicitly notes its model does not draw from factual payroll records. RecruitingFromScratch's 14-posting sample (2025–2026) lands at a $168k median ($150k–$217k), closer to the board's $165k median and reinforcing that the board band reflects real posted roles rather than aspirational ranges.

Geography matters. Skylo's Palo Alto headquarters sits in a San Jose metro area with a Cost of Living Index of 214.5 (114.5 percent above the U.S. average and 53.4 percent above California's). A $200k base in Mountain View purchases roughly what $93k buys nationally. The Remote, US listing for the Senior Director role ($230k–$240k) suggests the company prices to the high end of the band regardless of location, at least for government-facing leadership.

Benefits appear consistent with venture-backed deep-tech norms: retirement plans, wellness programs, and a bonus structure described as motivating by employee accounts on Salary.com. Equity grants are not disclosed in any public posting.

The compensation picture is coherent: Skylo pays at market rates for specialized RF, embedded, and systems talent in the Bay Area, with a board band that narrows to $124k–$240k for core engineering and widens at the top for mission-critical architecture and government product roles. The posted ranges are real, recent, and specific enough to anchor negotiation.

Inside the interview loop

Skylo runs a four-round interview loop that typically spans three to five weeks, per the company's own interview guide published on Dataford as of August 2026. The structure is deliberate: a recruiter screen, two technical deep dives, a technical presentation, and a cultural fit evaluation. But the bar isn't syntax recall. Focus on the challenges you faced, the trade-offs you considered, and the final results. Be prepared for deep-dive questions into the 'why' of your implementation." Interviewers probe the decision trail, not the demo. Interviewers test for this by asking how candidates have handled ambiguous requirements, shifting priorities, or cross-team dependencies, common conditions in a company building satellite-enabled connectivity across consumer smartphones, wearables, and enterprise devices on five continents. The guide also notes the process engages "various levels of engineering leadership to ensure a strong cultural and technical fit," meaning candidates meet not just peers but managers and directors who will depend on their judgment.

What distinguishes successful candidates? The guide and aggregated reports converge on a few signals. Communication clarity during system design ("start with a high-level overview before diving into the details") separates engineers who can lead architecture discussions from those who only execute tickets. Transparency when stuck ("communicate your reasoning process… we are interested in how you approach the unknown as much as what you already know") matters more than a perfect answer. Preparation on the domain helps: "Research the basics of satellite connectivity and the 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) standards. Having a high-level understanding of this space will set you apart from other candidates." And candidates who ask about the team's current challenges ("shows genuine interest and helps you evaluate if Skylo is the right place for your career") tend to close the loop with mutual conviction.

A generic final-round coaching video from August 2025 circulates online with advice about consistency, deeper research, competing with internal candidates, and strategic questions. It is not Skylo-specific and should be treated as background noise. The company's own published guide, the Glassdoor aggregate, and the first-party compensation band on Zero G Talent are the grounded signals. The process selects for engineers who have shipped integrated products in constrained environments, can reason across RF, firmware, and cloud, and operate with ownership when the spec is still being written.

Where the work gets done

Skylo's job board lists roles in Mountain View, California, and a US-remote option for a government-focused director position. The company's live service spans five continents and 41 countries, LinkedIn's post reports, with recent commercial launches in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Sweden, and Korea. That footprint is built on partnerships — Telefónica Germany, Tele2, Soracom, KPN, Vodafone, Space42/Thuraya-4, Deutsche Telekom, o2 Business, Charter/Comcast, Verizon — rather than owned ground infrastructure at each location. The work at each site therefore reflects the type of integration Skylo does: standards-based non-terrestrial network (NTN) software that sits between mobile network operators' core networks and satellite providers' payloads.

Mountain View functions as the engineering and product center. The roles posted there — Space Mission Architect for D2D communications, Principal Product Manager for ecosystem, Director of Engineering Program Management, Director of System Test — indicate a concentration of systems engineering, RF and protocol expertise, and cross-partner coordination. A Space Mission Architect at Skylo owns the link budget, waveform design, and regulatory filing strategy for direct-to-device services that must operate over geostationary and LEO satellites using 3GPP Release 17/18 NTN specs. That work requires access to satellite operator telemetry, carrier lab environments, and the certification test suites Skylo runs for every chipset, module, and device that carries the "Skylo Certified" mark. The certification program itself is a continuous cycle: compliance matrix, implementation, testing, confirmation, and new-feature regression. Mountain View hosts the team that manages that cycle across Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 platforms, Murata 1SC modules, Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 modems, Samsung Exynos 2500, and the growing list of certified devices from Garmin, Samsung Galaxy S25/Z Fold/Flip, Google Pixel 9/10, and IoT modules from Blues, LooUQ, Creative5, and Digitanimal.

The US-remote role (Senior Director, Strategic Development for Government Systems) signals a separate track: selling and shaping the same NTN layer into defense and public-safety procurement channels. That work happens wherever the customer operates: Arctic test ranges, as Tele2 and Skylo demonstrated in December 2025, or Colombian emergency-response corridors tested in May 2026. The physical capability there is not a lab but the ability to deploy a standards-based core that roams onto any partner satellite (Viasat, Inmarsat/Thuraya, Iridium, Globalstar, Eutelsat/OneWeb) without bespoke hardware on the device side. Skylo's CPO has described the strategy as "shunning vertical integration": the company does not build or operate satellites, nor does it run consumer-facing apps. Outside the US, Skylo's presence is embedded in partner facilities. The Seoul media session in August 2026 used a live Pixel 10 Pro XL connecting to a satellite 37,000 km away, a demonstration that required Skylo engineers on-site at a Korean carrier or satellite partner's lab. The Soracom launch in Japan, the o2 Business IoT tariff in Germany, the Tele2 service in Sweden, the KPN wholesale agreement in the Netherlands, and the Space42/Thuraya-4 integration covering the Middle East and Africa each put Skylo software into a partner's network operations center and satellite gateway. The three global sites map to this model: a US headquarters in Mountain View, a US-distributed government team, and international hubs aligned with the densest partner clusters (EMEA and APAC, given the announced deals). The research does not name those hubs explicitly, and the job board has not yet posted roles there.

What enables the work at every site is not square footage but access: to satellite operator APIs for real-time ephemeris and beam scheduling; to MNO core networks for SIM authentication and roaming policy; to regulatory filings (FCC, ISED, CE/ETSI, and each national administration) that govern earth-station licensing and spectrum sharing; and to the device certification labs where RF conformance, protocol compliance, and "Standards Plus" interoperability tests run. Skylo's certification FAQ notes that a malfunctioning device on a terrestrial network causes localized disruption, but on a satellite network it can impact an entire continent; so the test environment must replicate the full link, including Doppler, delay, and beam handover. The hybrid-remote model means a systems engineer in Mountain View can debug a NB-IoT NTN attach failure on a Soracom SIM in Tokyo while a government-program director in Colorado writes a proposal for Arctic maritime domain awareness. Both rely on the same cloud-hosted NTN core and the same certification regression suite. The physical sites are anchors for the hardware-adjacent work — RF test racks, satellite simulator chains, partner lab access — while the software and standards work travels with the people.

Employee reviews tell a split story. Glassdoor shows 71 percent of reviewers would recommend Skylo to a friend, with work-life balance rated 3.6 out of 5 and culture and values at 3.5. AmbitionBox, drawing on a smaller sample, puts the overall rating at 3.3 and flags work satisfaction at 2.7 (the lowest factor) while work-life balance sits at 4.1. That gap matters. It suggests people appreciate the flexibility and the mission but find the day-to-day execution grinding in ways the perks don't offset.

The LinkedIn description puts it bluntly: the team and ecosystem are driving the wireless industry's roadmap. That only works if individuals take end-to-end responsibility for their piece of the stack — RF front end, modem firmware, network protocols, cloud services, regulatory filings — and coordinate across the three sites without waiting for a weekly sync to unblock.

Cross-functional collaboration isn't optional. The product is a network. A change in the satellite link budget ripples through modem firmware, server-side scheduling, and the carrier integration layer. The global deployment team (US, Finland, India) means time zones are a design constraint. Engineers who thrive here treat the distributed structure as a given and build communication habits that survive eight-hour offsets.

Tolerance for ambiguity separates the people who stay from the ones who leave. The work satisfaction score of 2.7 on AmbitionBox, contrasted with a 4.1 for work-life balance, hints at a culture that gives you autonomy but asks you to define the problem before you solve it. Early-stage deep tech (especially a standards-based service operator selling to carriers) moves on regulatory timelines, partner integration schedules, and hardware qualification cycles that no sprint planning can compress. The people who last are comfortable making architectural decisions with incomplete data and revising them when the next test flight or field trial returns real numbers.

Technical depth in constrained environments is the hiring bar the main theme identifies. The company was founded on the insight that a software-defined layer could make satellite connectivity cheap and ubiquitous. Proving that at scale — across five continents, millions of devices, multiple frequency bands, and evolving 3GPP releases — means solving link budget, power, latency, and cost constraints simultaneously.

The hybrid-remote model across three sites selects for self-directed communicators. The people who succeed treat documentation, test automation, and clear interface contracts as survival tools, not bureaucracy.

If the reviews are directionally right, Skylo rewards the engineer who wants to own a hard subsystem in a live global network, can collaborate across time zones without hand-holding, and accepts that the roadmap will shift when physics or regulators say so. The compensation reflects that scarcity. The work-life balance suggests the company respects boundaries. The work satisfaction score suggests the work itself remains genuinely hard, and for the right person, that's the point. The signal doesn't drop.
