Who Scout hires and where they land

Scout Space doesn't hire like a prime contractor. It hires like a company that must launch hardware, clear export-control gates, and keep a lean team moving without a bureaucracy to absorb the friction.

The live openings tell the story. Zero G Talent's board shows six recent postings: Director of Engineering, Senior Parts and Reliability Engineer, Controller, Senior IT Systems Administrator, Technical Program Manager, and Senior Mission Systems Engineer. That mix — finance, quality, IT, program management, mission systems, forms the operational spine of a small space domain awareness company in Reston, Virginia. Greenhouse lists 12 open requisitions; Glassdoor counts 11; the board itself tallies 11 salaried roles. The numbers converge: Scout is staffing the functions that let it fly.

A hard constraint shapes every team: U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or protected-individual status under 8 USC 1324b(a)(3), because the work falls under State Department export authorization. That gate filters the applicant pool before a résumé is read. Most of the team already works hybrid or remote. The company prefers candidates in or around Reston "as we scale our facilities and engineering team to provide more opportunities to work and collaborate in-person." Internships are "mainly remote, but may involve in-person opportunities." A candidate walking in should expect a Reston anchor, a distributed team, and a pace set by launch schedules and government milestones — not headcount targets.

The pay structure: flat, lean, and benchmarked against primes

Scout Space's live postings cluster in a $110k–$200k base-salary band with a $200k median, according to Zero G Talent's board — a range that holds across engineering, finance, quality, IT, and program management. Six of 11 salaried roles carry explicit ranges; all sit inside the same $90k window, and the median lands at the top. That flat structure reflects a 30-person outfit (per Levels.fyi) that runs lean and pays for ownership, not headcount.

The table makes the hiring mix visible. Three of the six named roles (Controller, Senior Parts and Reliability Engineer, Senior IT Systems Administrator) are pure operational functions. Technical Program Manager bridges execution and delivery. Only Director of Engineering and Senior Mission Systems Engineer sit in traditional spacecraft engineering. That ratio matches the company's stated focus: space domain awareness sensors and autonomy software, but the hiring is weighted toward the finance, quality, supply-chain, and IT infrastructure that keep a small Reston-based prime flying. Glassdoor shows 11 employee-posted salaries and reviews, consistent with the board's 11-role count.

Remote and hybrid designations are baked into each listing. Per the board data, Director of Engineering and Senior IT Systems Administrator are hybrid; those two roles, and Technical Program Manager are remote; Senior Mission Systems Engineer is on-site. The split reflects the work: hardware-adjacent reliability and mission-systems seats need lab access; finance, IT, program management, and the engineering lead role do not. Candidates should read the work-mode tag as a proxy for how much time the role spends in the Reston integration spaces versus a home office.

The $200k median is striking for a Series A space company with $1M–$10M estimated revenue (Levels.fyi). It signals that Scout benchmarks against prime-contractor and defense-tech compensation, not early-stage startup equity packages. Equity is not disclosed in the board postings; candidates should ask about grant size and vesting during the screen.

Inside the interview loop: four rounds, three weeks, no brainteasers

Scout Space runs a four-round loop that typically spans three to five weeks. The sequence is consistent across engineering and technical roles: an initial conversation, two technical evaluations, an onsite panel preparation session, and a final decision round. Dataford's interview guide, which aggregates reported loops, describes the process as "highly technical but practical, focusing on real-world engineering scenarios rather than abstract brainteasers" and notes it evaluates "both your deep technical capabilities and your ability to work in a collaborative, cross-functional startup environment."

The initial conversation is a recruiter screen where the filter is straightforward: can you articulate why Scout's mission (space domain awareness via distributed satellite sensing) matches your background, and do you have the baseline technical depth for the role? Recruiters listen for hardware-software empathy: evidence you've written code or designed systems that touched physical hardware — sensors, actuators, power budgets, thermal constraints. "When preparing technical examples, focus heavily on projects where software interacted directly with physical systems, sensors, or actuators," the guide advises. "Demonstrating this hardware-software empathy is highly valued by the hiring team."

Rounds two and three are the technical evaluations. Reported loops show exactly what gets tested: Software Engineering (General) appears in every loop; Senior-Level Engineering in 96%; Mission Systems Engineering in 92%; Flight Software Engineering in 88%; Satellite Systems Engineering in 85%. Electrical Engineering for Space Systems (81%), Embedded Software Development (77%), and Optomechanical Engineering (74%) follow. The onsite panel is where the cross-functional bar shows up. The guide is explicit: "Communicate across disciplines: Show that you can speak the language of electrical and mechanical engineers. Use clear, unambiguous terminology when discussing interfaces and data structures." The behavioral portion rewards specific debugging stories: "During behavioral interviews, highlight experiences where you had to debug complex, interdisciplinary failures. Stories about finding a software bug that turned out to be a hardware noise issue are highly relevant and respected."

Candidates who cannot admit knowledge gaps, such as when asked a complex physics or hardware question outside their expertise, fail the ownership test; they should instead walk the interviewer through their logical thought process and explain how they would collaborate with a domain expert to find the answer.

The Greenhouse career page frames the final evaluation: "We are looking for people that bring excitement and energy to our organization, are curious and eager to..." — the sentence cuts off in the feed, but the signal is clear: curiosity and energy are evaluated, not assumed.

Glassdoor reports confirm the structure: "The interview typically consists of multiple stages, including an initial HR interview, a technical round, and a take-home assignment for candidates in technical roles. Interview timelines: Most candidates noted a well-defined process that typically unfolds over a few weeks, allowing for clear expectations."

For non-engineering roles (the non-engineering roles listed above), the loop follows a similar structure with domain-specific case studies, and the board data shows these roles carry the same $110k–$200k band.

A strong application contains: a resume that quantifies hardware-software interaction, a cover letter that names Scout's specific mission (space domain awareness), and interview answers that trace a line from past interdisciplinary debugging to the satellite integration challenges Scout publishes. Generic "full-stack" narratives without embedded or real-time evidence, inability to discuss power/thermal/memory constraints, and answers that sound rehearsed rather than reasoned through are consistent with candidate-reported rejection patterns.

Two Northern Virginia sites: a headquarters and a factory floor

Scout Space operates from two Northern Virginia sites that reflect a hardware company still small enough to fit in a single headquarters but scaling fast enough to need its own manufacturing floor. The primary address is 2002 Edmund Halley Drive in Reston, inside the Summit office complex near Dulles Airport. That facility houses corporate leadership, strategic planning, and the majority of technical development for the roughly 38-person team as of September 2026, per the company's office directory. The building sits at the end of Edmund Halley Drive — a corridor that Bernstein Management Corporation, which acquired the Summit offices in 2025, has proposed redeveloping into over 3.1 million square feet of new office space, multifamily housing, and retail. A rezoning application was submitted in March 2026; a draft amendment has not yet been released. For now, the lease holds and the headquarters functions as the day-to-day center of gravity.

Six miles east, in the Merrifield area south of the Dunn Loring Metro station, Scout is building out a 2,650-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Lee Hi Industrial Park. The company announced the expansion in June 2026 alongside its $18 million Series A, saying it would create 31 Virginia jobs and begin operations there in the fall. The space is sized for sensor assembly, integration, and test, the work that turns the Owl electro-optical and infrared payloads and the autonomy software stack into flight hardware. Fairfax County Economic Development Authority notes the company's current clients include the U.S. Space Force and Blue Origin; the Blue Ring integration campaign, which will fly Scout's flagship Owl sensor on Blue Origin's inaugural Blue Ring mission, drives the manufacturing build-out. Proximity to those mission partners and to the Pentagon's acquisition ecosystem is the stated rationale for staying in Northern Virginia rather than chasing cheaper industrial space farther out.

The job postings on Zero G Talent's board make the hybrid reality concrete. Of the six live salaried roles sampled, two list "Reston, VA - Hybrid" (Director of Engineering, Senior IT Systems Administrator), three list "Reston, VA - Remote" (Senior Parts and Reliability Engineer, Controller, Technical Program Manager), and one lists "Reston, VA - On-site" (Senior Mission Systems Engineer). The pattern fits a hardware shop where mechanical, optical, and integration engineers need lab access several days a week while finance, IT, program management, and parts-reliability specialists can operate remotely. The company has not published a formal return-to-office mandate; the role-by-role designations function as the de facto policy.

That flexibility is partly a recruiting lever in a region where federal workforce layoffs and funding cuts have softened the labor market but housing and energy infrastructure remain tight. Candidates should expect to commute to Reston or Merrifield for hardware milestones (integration reviews, vibration test, thermal vacuum) and work remotely the rest of the time. The Summit rezoning adds a medium-term variable; the Merrifield manufacturing footprint is the newer, purpose-built commitment.

The profile: ownership without a safety net

Two in three Scout Space employees would recommend the company to a friend, per Glassdoor (66%). The reviews tell the real story: roles are not as clearly defined as they tend to be at other agencies. Management is working hard to address these issues, but at times, change can be slow and frustrating. Employees are driven and eager to help out with initiatives not always associated with their role. The company is still developing its culture.

The live openings (those four roles) are operational spines, not pure research seats. Mission fluency here means speaking SDA without a glossary. You need to know why a long-range, independently taskable, gimbaled optical instrument with onboard AI-driven processing matters for collision avoidance in GEO, and you need to explain it to a program officer. The Owl sensor is a flight unit funded under a sequential Phase II, destined for a commercial tug's inaugural mission.

Comfort with ambiguity is a survival trait. The Reston headquarters doubles as an integration lab. The Technical Program Manager coordinates a supply chain that spans radiation-hardened FPGAs, custom optics, and a launch provider's evolving interface control document — all while the company culture is still developing. One Reddit observer noted a new company will feel more like a startup as it gets off the ground. That is the operating model.

The through-line across finance, quality, supply chain, and engineering is ownership without a safety net. The company pays competitively for Reston, but the equity upside ties to a single payload line and a single customer tier. People who have built a test stand in a garage, or closed a monthly close while the ERP was half-implemented, or written a waiver that kept a launch date; they recognize the rhythm. They apply. The Owl ships. They stay for the next one.
