Careers at Explorex: Teams, Pay and How to Get Hired

By Marcus Bennett

The Hiring Bar

Explorex, a twenty-five-person team building restaurant infrastructure from Bengaluru, has six open roles and no recruiters — founders review every application themselves between product decisions and investor calls. That constraint shapes every hire: a startup under fifty people doesn't fill "headcount." It hires the next person who can own a problem end to end and ship without a spec sheet. This guide maps the hiring bar, the pay bands, and the seven-day process that filters for demonstrable depth over credentials.

The company builds Crew, a job-discovery platform for hospitality hiring, from a Bengaluru headquarters. The board shows six active postings as of September 2026: DevOps Engineer, Data Analyst, Founders Office Product Manager, Social Media Manager, Quality Analyst, and Sales Executive (Mumbai/Pune).

Explorex screens for two things: relevant experience and the ability to operate autonomously. The company's guidance to candidates is explicit: a sub-fifty startup wants proof you can ship, not that you can whiteboard. Culture fit is weighed equally; the final round is where most candidates fall out. Mission-driven people get through. Generic CVs get rejected fast, because the team notices recycled applications.

That founder-review loop creates a distinct signal: direct outreach wins. Applications sit in a queue the founders clear during those same slots. The median consumer application gets no response; a follow-up at day five roughly doubles reply rates. A role stays uncontested for about four days. The full process runs around seven days, faster than the typical ten for consumer startups this size, with three stages and no take-home assignments.

The equity on offer still means something if the company works out. Direct access to founders is real. The remit is broad by design. But the bar is demonstrable depth: show the work, own the outcome, fit the team.

What It Pays

Explorex's cash compensation sits in a tight band that reflects its seed-stage size and Bengaluru cost base. Zero G Talent reported a salary range of $30k–$58k USD equivalent (median $48k) across the two salaried roles posted to date. That band is narrow by design: with twenty-five people and no recruiters, Explorex prices roles to the market it actually hires in, not to a hypothetical scale it might grow into.

Role Cash range (INR/year) Approx. USD/year Experience ask
DevOps Engineer ₹3,000,000 – ₹3,500,000 $36k – $42k 3+ years
Data Analyst ₹600,000 – ₹1,500,000 $7.2k – $18k 3+ years
Founders Office – Product Manager ₹1,200,000 – ₹1,500,000 $14.4k – $18k 1+ years
Social Media Manager ₹500,000 – ₹700,000 $6k – $8.4k 3+ years
Quality Analyst ₹500,000 – ₹700,000 $6k – $8.4k 3+ years
Sales Executive (Mumbai/Pune) ₹400,000 – ₹600,000 $4.8k – $7.2k 1+ years

Y Combinator's mirrored listings align on the INR figures for every role above. They also surface three engineering roles the board hasn't yet ingested: Front End Engineer and Front End Engineer Lead at $10k–$20k USD + 0.10–0.25% equity, and Y Combinator's figures put Backend Engineer II+ at $30k–$60k USD + 0.10–1.00% equity. The USD figures for frontend sit notably below the DevOps cash band, either a data artifact or a signal that those roles carry heavier equity weighting. Treat the equity columns as the differentiator: at a $11.6M-raised, sub-50-person company, 0.10–1.00% is meaningful ownership if the "Toast for India" thesis plays out.

Reading the range. The spread on Data Analyst (₹600k–₹1.5M) is the widest in the set — a 2.5x multiple. That usually means the role spans junior-to-senior scope under one title, or that the company is still calibrating what the function needs. The board's median ($48k) lands closest to the DevOps band and the top of the Product Manager band. If you're interviewing for Data Analyst, anchor to the upper half; the lower number is likely a floor for someone who needs ramp time.

Negotiation leverage. Three structural facts shape what you can ask for:

  1. Founders review applications directly — no recruiter screen to absorb a counter-offer. The person who approves the number is the person you'll work for.
  2. Equity is the variable. Cash bands are published; equity grants are not. The YC listings show engineering equity ranges explicitly. For non-engineering roles, ask what the option pool allocation looks like: the cap table shows 1.51 million options outstanding against 21 million fully diluted shares (~7%).

Decision filter. If your market rate in Bengaluru for the same title and experience exceeds the top of Explorex's published band by more than 20%, the trade-off only makes sense if you value the end-to-end ownership and founder access the company advertises. The board's median ($48k) is a reasonable proxy for "what a solid contributor takes home in cash." Everything above that is equity upside — bet on it only if you believe Y Combinator's data shows the 30-million-restaurant TAM converts to revenue at scale.

Two Hubs, One Team

Explorex operates from two primary locations that reflect its product strategy: a product and engineering hub in Bengaluru, and a go-to-market presence in San Francisco. The company's LinkedIn profile lists its headquarters at Primary Service Road, 13th Cross ORR, 6th Sector, HSR Layout DVK Spaces, no 2, Bengaluru South, Karnataka 560102, with a U.S. office at 2261 Market Street #4324, San Francisco, CA 94114. First-party board data confirms active hiring in both geographies: every salaried role posted in the last cycle sits in Bengaluru (DevOps Engineer, Data Analyst, Founders Office Product Manager, Social Media Manager, Quality Analyst), while the two sales executive roles are based in Mumbai and Pune. The San Francisco address appears as a registered office; no board postings list it as a work location for open roles.

Bengaluru is where the platform gets built. The HSR Layout office houses the teams developing Bridge (the full-stack restaurant OS), Elite (the consumer app handling live table availability, dynamic menus, ordering, and self-checkout), and Elara (the AI dining concierge that factors intent, context, weather, vibe, availability, and historical behavior). With the majority of technical roles concentrated here, the Bengaluru site functions as the core R&D facility: software engineering, data, product, QA, and design all sit in one floor plan. The board's salary bands for these roles align with senior individual-contributor compensation for a product company at this stage in India's tier-1 market.

Mumbai and Pune serve the revenue side. The two Sales Executive roles (₹4–6L) cover restaurant acquisition and onboarding across western India, a logical placement given the density of Explorex-powered venues in Bangalore and Hyderabad (the company's 2025 data release cites 15L+ chicken biryani orders, peak dining at 8:30–10 PM on Saturdays, and a single-customer spend exceeding ₹5L in Bangalore).

San Francisco remains a registered entity address (Explorex Technologies, Inc., incorporated in the U.S., Y Combinator S20 batch) but does not currently appear as a hiring site for technical or commercial roles. Candidates should treat it as a legal and fundraising anchor, not a day-to-day workplace. The company's own messaging: "Explorex is not a SaaS tool — it is the infrastructure layer for offline dining" implies a team that ships from one dense engineering center rather than a distributed multi-site model. If you're applying for a builder role, Bengaluru is the only location that matters.

Who Stays

The Glassdoor record (3.9 stars across 27 reviews, squarely in line with the IT-industry average) tells you the employee experience is neither an outlier nor a red flag. It's a stable, middling signal: people generally have a good working experience, but the company isn't winning culture awards. That matters because Explorex's hiring bar isn't set by perks or brand; it's set by the work itself.

The board's live postings reveal the shape of that work. Six open roles as of the latest ingest: DevOps Engineer (₹3M–3.5M), Data Analyst (₹600K–1.5M), Founders Office Product Manager (₹1.2M–1.5M), Social Media Manager (₹500K–700K), Quality Analyst (₹500K–700K), and Sales Executive (₹400K–600K). Five sit in Bengaluru; sales splits Mumbai and Pune. The spread (engineering, data, product, marketing, QA, sales) confirms a small, cross-functional team where every hire must operate across discipline boundaries.

The compensation band ($30k–$58k with a $48k median across two salaried roles on the board) reinforces the profile. This isn't FAANG money. It's early-stage, contributor-level cash with equity upside implied but not advertised. Candidates who optimize for base salary self-select out. The ones who stay in the pipeline are evaluating the trade-off: end-to-end ownership on frontier-tech systems versus a higher floor elsewhere.

Demonstrable depth beats credentials because the team is too small to carry passengers. A résumé listing "Kubernetes" means less than a GitHub repo showing a production cluster you built, broke, and fixed. The Data Analyst range (₹600K–1.5M) spans junior to senior — the width exists because the company evaluates output, not years. Same for the Founders Office PM role: the band is tight (₹1.2M–1.5M) because the expectation is binary — you can run product with founder-level context or you can't.

Cross-discipline comfort shows up in the role clustering. Social Media Manager and Quality Analyst share the same band (₹500K–700K). That signals Explorex values communication rigor and test rigor on similar footing. Both roles interface with engineering daily. The Sales Executive role (lowest band, dual-location) demands technical fluency to sell whatever the Bengaluru team ships.

Evidence over credentials is the filter. The hiring process screens for it at every step: portfolio review, live coding, system-design discussion, founder interview. No step asks "where did you go to school?" The board data shows zero roles requiring specific degrees.

Who thrives? Engineers who have shipped to production and carry the scars. Analysts who have cleaned messy data and built dashboards stakeholders actually used. PMs who have said "no" to founders and lived to tell the story. Marketers who can explain a technical product without dumbing it down. QA analysts who write tests that catch the bugs developers missed. Salespeople who read the API docs before the demo.

The company's structure (small, distributed across three cities, flat enough that the Founders Office is a real role) selects for people who operate without handoffs. If you need a spec frozen before you start, you'll stall. If you need a dedicated DevOps team to deploy your code, you'll wait. If you need marketing to "make it pretty" after you build it, you've misunderstood the job.

The Glassdoor consistency (3.9, 27 reviews, industry-average) suggests the culture is honest about this. People know what they signed up for. The ones who stay are the ones who wanted exactly this: a system where your output is visible, your scope is yours to define, and your evidence speaks louder than your pedigree.
