Careers at E2B: Teams, Pay and How to Get Hired

By Elena Petrova

The Team Behind the Runtime

The sandbox runtime that runs AI agents for 94 of the Fortune 100 is built by seventeen people.

That headcount (September 2026, per BuiltIn) makes every hire disproportionately visible. E2B raised a $21 million Series A in July 2025, bringing total disclosed funding to $35 million, and the capital is translating directly into headcount. The company is hiring across engineering, marketing, and operations in near-equal measure — a signal that the runtime layer is proven and the go-to-market engine is now the priority. As of late September the company lists nine to ten open roles across two hubs: San Francisco and Prague.

Engineering carries the largest share, four to six roles depending on the source, but marketing has pulled even in new postings. Three marketing positions appeared in the last 28 days: a Content Marketing Lead, a Community Growth Manager, and a Technical Copywriter, all based in San Francisco. Engineering added one: a Platform Engineer in Prague. The remaining openings sit in People (a Technical Recruiter in San Francisco) and Operations (a Business Operations role in San Francisco). Only two current listings carry a "senior" tag; the rest leave level open.

The roles map to a specific product architecture. E2B sells secure microVM sandboxes that spin up in milliseconds — infrastructure that lets AI agents execute code safely at scale. Engineering openings cluster around the platform layer: a Platform Engineer in San Francisco and Prague to orchestrate placement, live migrations, and sub-200ms VM startup; a Product Engineer – Backend Developer in both cities owning the Dashboard and SDK APIs, auth, billing, usage metering, and real-time WebSocket/SSE pipelines; a Billing Engineer in Prague redesigning the usage-metering and Stripe integration stack; and an Engineering Team Lead for Platform in Prague. The common thread is Go, distributed systems, and kernel-level observability — the stack that keeps sandboxes fast and isolated.

Marketing roles are unusually technical. The Content Marketing Lead owns strategy and production across articles, social, emails, customer stories, comparison pages, launches, and sales materials. The Community Growth Manager runs Discord, GitHub, forums, and meetups while producing workshops, hackathons, and dinners. The Technical Copywriter writes comparison, migration, integration, and documentation-adjacent explainers plus case studies. Each requires fluency in AI infrastructure — not just "developer marketing" as a discipline but the ability to explain sandbox internals to engineers evaluating the runtime.

The lone People role, a Technical Recruiter, runs full-cycle recruiting for senior engineering talent, designs interview processes, and builds talent brand. Business Operations oversees finance, legal, HR, vendor management, and logistics as the company scales. Both are San Francisco-based and signal that the non-engineering backbone is being professionalized in parallel with product.

Qualifications follow the product. Engineering candidates need production Go, distributed systems experience, and a track record shipping latency-sensitive infrastructure. Marketing hires need a portfolio of technical content aimed at builders — migration guides, API deep dives, architecture comparisons, not blog fluff. The recruiter needs a network in senior systems engineering. Operations wants someone who has built finance, legal, and vendor processes at a Series A startup before. Across functions the careers page names four values: high agency (ownership by default), ambition to ship (live beats planned), humility and curiosity (strong opinions, loosely held), and developer experience (every call starts from what builders need). The bar is not years of experience; it is evidence of shipping the kind of infrastructure E2B runs on.

Pay Bands and the Math Behind Them

E2B's compensation reflects a Series A company that raised $35 million in under two years and reached eight-figure ARR before its second birthday. The salary bands sit above early-stage norms but below hyperscaler ceilings. Board data, drawn from ten live salaried postings, shows a band spanning $89,000 to $350,000 with a median of $200,000. The spread maps cleanly to function and seniority.

Role Location Salary Band (Annual) Source
Platform Engineer San Francisco $250,000 – $350,000 Zero G Talent board
Product Engineer – Backend San Francisco $175,000 – $350,000 Zero G Talent board
Engineering Team Lead Prague 1,800,000 – 3,600,000 CZK Zero G Talent board
Platform Engineer Prague 1,500,000 – 3,000,000 CZK/month Zero G Talent board
Business Operations San Francisco $200,000 – $230,000 Zero G Talent board
Technical Copywriter San Francisco $90,000 – $200,000 Zero G Talent board

Indeed's aggregate of ten past and present postings reports a similar spread: $128,488 for a Content Marketer at the low end to $308,501 for a Head of Product at the high end. The overlap suggests the ranges are real and current, not aspirational. E2B's careers page confirms equity grants across roles, though specific percentages or strike prices aren't public, typical for a private Series A where the 409A valuation moves quarterly.

The benefits package leans hard into in-office presence. The company mandates four days on-site, one day remote from its San Francisco (Market Street) and Prague (Na Perštýně) offices. In return, it covers free lunch daily, free dinner after 6 p.m., late-night and early-morning Uber rides, and a living-proximity allowance for employees near either office. Hardware is top-spec: 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 Pro or a comparable Linux machine, dual monitors, and a $2,000 personal equipment budget. AI software subscriptions are expensed. Health coverage includes medical, dental, vision, and gym reimbursement; a 401(k) is offered in the U.S., with benefits in other countries aligned to local statutes. Unlimited, trust-based PTO rounds out the offer.

Inside the Interview Loop

The interview loop at E2B runs three rounds over roughly three to five weeks: a phone screen, technical interviews, and a final round. Dataford's interview guide, compiled from candidate reports, maps the full sequence. The process is described as rigorous yet supportive, emphasizing collaboration and technical excellence — a framing that matches the company's own emphasis on both technical depth and interpersonal fluency.

What the phone screen actually screens for

The initial call assesses whether you can operate in the problem space E2B lives in: distributed systems, platform engineering, and the developer experience layer that sits on top. Skill-frequency data from reported loops makes the priority list explicit — distributed systems appears in every loop, platform engineering in 96 percent, software engineering fundamentals in 93 percent. Engineering leadership and technical leadership (team or platform scope) each show up in roughly 85–90 percent of interviews. AI product engineering registers at 82 percent, system scalability at 79 percent, and platform engineering practices at 75 percent. Dashboard and UI engineering, reliability engineering, developer experience, and concurrency or parallelism round out the lower tier but still appear in more than half of loops.

Technical interviews: depth over breadth

The technical rounds test the top-tier skills directly. Candidates report the interviews are challenging, reflecting the technical and collaborative nature of the role. Expect coding exercises and system-design prompts that lean toward platform-scale questions. The collaboration signal is evaluated in real time; interviewers watch whether you ask clarifying questions, articulate trade-offs, and incorporate feedback mid-session. Successful candidates demonstrate strong technical proficiency, effective problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with teams. They communicate clearly and align with E2B's values throughout the interview process, the guide summarizes.

Final round and decision

The final round typically adds a leadership or cross-functional panel. Engineering leadership and technical leadership competencies (each tested in roughly 85–90 percent of loops) come into focus here. You'll discuss architectural decisions you've owned, how you've mentored junior engineers, and how you've navigated product-engineering tension. The company's own description of the role emphasizes contributing to architectural discussions and mentoring junior engineers alongside regular code reviews and participation in agile ceremonies. Offer likelihood varies by candidate performance across those steps, especially in the technical portion that assesses coding and problem solving.

What a strong application looks like

A resume that clears the screen usually shows: production experience with cloud platforms and containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes), fluency in Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines, and at least one project where you owned a system that served external developers or internal platform consumers. The role requirements list proficiency in specific programming languages relevant to the role, strong understanding of algorithms and data structures, and experience with cloud platforms and architectures as must-haves. Nice-to-haves include DevOps practices, containerization, and UX design principles. E2B's first-party board listings signal that senior IC and lead tracks both exist and that compensation bands reflect the skill density the loop tests for.

What disqualifies candidates

The collaborative signal is weighted heavily: interviewers look for evidence you can navigate complex technical conversations while also fostering a collaborative environment. The process also filters for alignment with a culture that emphasizes teamwork, continuous learning, and a commitment to delivering quality products. Most candidates find that dedicating several weeks to focused preparation yields the best results — not because the bar is arbitrary, but because the skill surface is genuinely wide.

Two Hubs, One Runtime

E2B operates from two primary hubs, its headquarters in San Francisco and a newly opened office in Prague, while maintaining a remote-first culture that predates the Prague expansion. The company's LinkedIn page lists its headquarters as San Francisco, California, with a Prague address at Na Perštýně 342/1, 6th floor, 11000, Czech Republic. As of September 2026, the company announced it was opening a new office in Prague as an addition to its HQ in San Francisco, signaling a deliberate two-hub strategy rather than a relocation. Highperformr's September 2026 snapshot confirms no additional office locations beyond these two.

The San Francisco hub anchors the company's commercial and product-facing functions. These roles benefit from proximity to the Bay Area's AI infrastructure ecosystem, where E2B counts Hugging Face, Meta, Amp, Gumloop, Manus, Lindy, and Groq among its users. The Platform Engineer band in San Francisco tops out at $350K, the highest on the board, reflecting the premium for engineers who can ship the Firecracker microVM runtime that underpins E2B's isolation guarantees.

Prague, by contrast, is positioned as an engineering center of gravity. Tracxn identifies E2B as a Series A company based in Prague, founded in 2023 by Vasek Mlejnsky and Tomas Valenta, and the CEO listed as of April 2025 is Matěj Kovář, a Czech name consistent with a Prague-anchored leadership presence.

What each site enables maps to the product's architecture. E2B's core offering, customized Firecracker microVMs, each with its own kernel, that give AI agents a separate sandbox for executing untrusted code, demands deep systems engineering: kernel-level virtualization, container orchestration, and low-latency sandbox boot times. Paper Instruments benchmarked E2B at up to three times faster than every other sandbox provider. That work clusters in Prague, where the Team Lead and Platform Engineer roles sit. San Francisco, meanwhile, hosts the roles that translate the runtime into product adoption: the Backend Product Engineer who shapes the developer API, the Business Operations hire who structures enterprise deals, and the Technical Copywriter who documents the platform for the community the company advertised in September 2026 as "the best place on the internet for people building agents."

The remote-first label matters. Highperformr's September 2026 digest explicitly calls E2B a remote-first company that is currently expanding, and the job board's geographic split leaves room for distributed hires not tied to either office. But the physical hubs serve a recruiting function: they give candidates a concrete answer to "where would I work?" For a candidate, the choice of hub, or neither, signals which side of the product they'll touch. Prague puts you in the microVM kernel loop. San Francisco puts you in the developer-feedback loop. Both put you in a company that ships sandbox isolation as a primitive for the agent economy.

The Profile That Lasts

The hiring pattern tells the story. E2B's open roles form a coherent picture of what the company optimizes for. This is not a team hiring for narrow specialization. It is building a developer-facing infrastructure product, "Machines for AI agents" per its LinkedIn; "Safely run AI-generated code in E2B sandbox" per BuiltIn, with a 17-person headcount spread across two cities.

Systems fluency over framework familiarity

Every engineering role on the board is a platform or product engineering role. There are no frontend-only, mobile-only, or single-language postings. The Platform Engineer bands in San Francisco and Prague sit alongside the Product Engineer – Backend role, and the Engineering Team Lead in Prague. This spread signals that the bar is systems-level competence: sandbox isolation, code execution environments, agent-tool interaction, and the reliability guarantees that make AI-generated code safe to run in production. Candidates who have built runtime infrastructure, container orchestration, or developer tooling, and can articulate the trade-offs, map to the actual work. Framework churn tolerance matters less than understanding the layer below.

Developer empathy as a first-class skill

The Technical Copywriter role exists because E2B's product is consumed by developers, not end users. Documentation, SDK references, integration guides, and changelog narratives are part of the product surface area. The same instinct shows in the Product Engineer – Backend title: not "Backend Engineer" but "Product Engineer," implying ownership of the developer experience from API design through to error messages.

Distributed ownership by default

With 17 employees split between San Francisco and Prague, there is no headquarters gravity to hide behind. The BuiltIn profile notes "OnSite Workspace Employees work from physical offices. Typical time on-site: None, a phrasing that suggests offices exist but attendance is not mandated." The Engineering Team Lead role in Prague confirms that leadership is distributed.

High-agency comfort with ambiguity

The Business Operations role is a generalist slot at a company too small for specialized ops functions. The person who fills it will touch finance, legal, people ops, vendor management, and the operational glue that keeps a binational team compliant and moving. The compensation bands, median $200K across 10 salaried roles on the Zero G Talent board, reflect an expectation of adult autonomy.

Mission alignment: infrastructure for the agentic web

The company's self-description, "Machines for AI agents", is not branding fluff. It defines the technical horizon: building the compute substrate that lets LLMs act, not just chat. The hiring data bears this out: the roles cluster around the execution layer (sandbox, platform, backend) rather than model training or application features.

The filter in practice

Put together, the profile is: a systems engineer who writes, a remote-native operator who owns outcomes, a developer-tools builder who has felt the pain they're now solving, and a pragmatist who treats "AI agents" as an architectural constraint, not a buzzword. The board's salary bands confirm the company pays for that intersection. The Prague–San Francisco split confirms it hires for it globally. The 17-person headcount confirms there is nowhere to hide. If that description fits, the interview process is designed to verify it. If it doesn't, the compensation is competitive for a reason — the work demands it.

Seventeen people. Ninety-four of the Fortune 100. The next hire changes the ratio.
