Agile Space Industries posted 24 salaried roles in seven days, Zero G Talent's figures show, — a hiring burst that maps the propulsion disciplines the Durango company needs to fly hypergolic engines on lunar landers and national-security satellites. The screen filters for hands-on hot-fire experience and cross-discipline adaptability over pedigree, and Agile is competing for that profile beyond traditional aerospace pipelines.

The surge follows a year that added 77 employees, bringing headcount to 167 companywide, 124 in Durango. Leadership additions, including CTO Jake Mills from Blue Origin and Florida Turbine Technologies and board member Mark Pasquale from Lockheed Martin, signal the same transition: from prototype shop to production-rate supplier. The roles split among Durango, Seattle, and Denver, a geographic footprint that mirrors Agile's test-and-production infrastructure, not talent-market convenience. That distribution, and the specific mix of disciplines, tells you what the screen actually filters for.

Past the Screen: Test Time Over Pedigree

Agile's careers page states it plainly: "Our design philosophy of rapid iteration means you will see your work tested in weeks instead of years." That sentence is the filter. The company runs two hypergolic vacuum test stands — Sunshine, stood up by AMPT in 2010, and Animas, inaugurated in April 2024 as the only commercial facility capable of vacuum testing hypergolic engines from 300 to 6,000 pounds of thrust. Lead test engineer Mesa Hollinbeck said the industry's bottleneck isn't building engines; it's getting credible test data early enough to avoid a four-year redesign. Agile hires people who can operate inside that loop.

Glassdoor's 10 interview reviews put the average hiring process at 17 days — faster than Northrop Grumman's average but far slower than the one-day turnarounds at General Dynamics Mission Systems or GracoRoberts. The gap suggests Agile screens for depth, not volume. Candidates describe technical interviews that walk through failure modes on actual test campaigns, not textbook problems. The company's own branding reinforces it: "Work on small teams with brilliant colleagues" and "Training opportunities, stipends for learning and continuing education, and access to industry conferences." The subtext: you'll be the subject-matter expert on your subsystem by week three.

The workforce composition bears this out. Agile employs more than 65 people across Durango, Mount Pleasant (PA), Tulsa, Seattle, and Denver, with staff in nine states. Founder Daudi Barnes spun the company out of Advanced Mobile Propulsion Test in 2019 specifically to own the test infrastructure AMPT provided as a service. Since then Agile has hot-fired nine clean-slate engines in-house. The A110 thruster, now qualified for ispace's Mission 3 lunar lander, went from design to flight-unit delivery in a timeline impossible at a prime contractor. Chief Engineer Lars Osborne said the lunar landing mission demanded a new storable bipropellant engine because existing options couldn't meet the descent profile. That kind of clean-sheet development only works if every engineer on the team can write test procedures, run the stand, and interpret the data without waiting for a specialist.

The screening signals converge on three non-negotiables. First: demonstrated test-stand time. Not simulation. Not analysis. Hot-fire experience with hypergolics or high-pressure systems, preferably in vacuum. Second: breadth across the V-model, requirements through qualification, because the teams are too small for silos. Third: comfort with ambiguity in a 40-percent-year-over-year growth environment where the org chart rewrites itself quarterly. The careers page offers "Flexible Time Off" and a 401(k) with 100-percent match up to 4 percent, but the real retention lever is the promise that your hardware fires. Candidates who lead with publications or clearances but no test logs don't advance. The screen catches engineers who have already broken hardware, figured out why, and flown the fix.

Durango's Vacuum Chamber Advantage

The Animas test stand sits on an acre of high-desert ground at 820 Airport Road, two stories of steel and plumbing named for the 13,789-foot peak looming over Durango. It is the only known commercial facility in the United States that can hot-fire engines heavier than 300 pounds inside a vacuum chamber simulating 100,000 feet of altitude — the actual environment those engines will see on orbit. The chamber pulls down to space-equivalent pressure while a data acquisition system streams 500-plus channels at up to 1 MHz, capturing thrust, pressure, temperature, vibration, and infrared video in the same shot. A fuel-mixing station on site blends M20 and other hypergolic combinations for immediate use or shipment. When Agile commissioned Animas in April 2024, Chief Commercial Officer Will Francis said the industry had waited years for a commercial facility that could test large hypergolic thrusters safely and quickly; the bottleneck "not only stifles innovation but could also risk national security."

That capability didn't appear by accident. Advanced Mobile Propulsion Test (AMPT) had been firing engines at the Durango–La Plata County Airport since 2009, serving commercial and government customers who needed altitude simulation without a NASA-sized budget. When Agile Space Propulsion merged with AMPT in 2019, the test infrastructure became the backbone for a new proposition: design, print, assemble, and verify propulsion hardware under one roof. Barnes chose Durango deliberately, leaving traditional aerospace corridors to build where engineers could run a hot-fire in the morning and ride technical singletrack by afternoon. The lifestyle argument is real, but the operational argument is sharper. Hypergolic engines (hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide) demand rigorous safety protocols and specialized handling. The expansion completed in July 2026 makes that logic physical. A 20,500-square-foot addition brought the headquarters to roughly 40,000 square feet. The new wing is mostly office and quality-inspection space, including a climate-controlled metrology room, while the original building converts to pure manufacturing: cleanrooms, an expanded machine shop, and, critically, in-house vibration testing. Bringing shake-table capability inside eliminates a vendor handoff that used to add weeks and risk to every flight unit. Vice President of Business Development Bryce Dabbs said the goal is "to move all of our design, manufacturing and production processes under one roof."

At the ribbon-cutting, Lieutenant Governor Primavera called the expansion proof that aerospace reaches every corner of the state; Senator John Hickenlooper and Representative Jeff Hurd tied the facility to national competitiveness and local jobs in the same breath. Colorado's Advanced Industries Accelerator program backed Agile with two $250,000 grants, in 2017 and 2023. La Plata County has long run on tourism, agriculture, and extraction. Seventy-plus engineering and manufacturing salaries arriving in a single year rewire the tax base and the talent pipeline.

Agile's order book has grown six-fold since 2022, SpaceNews's data shows, and, according to SpaceNews, booked business already nearly doubles projected 2025 revenue. Contracts from Astrobotic and ispace for lunar lander thrusters, plus recurring orders from existing defense and commercial customers, mean the test stand cannot sit idle. An oversubscribed $17 million Series A, SpaceNews reported, closed in February with Lockheed Martin among the investors, explicitly to scale production and test throughput across Colorado, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. CEO Chris Pearson said the expanded Durango footprint shows commitment to the Colorado headquarters while the company grows new sites in Oklahoma and Washington. The Animas chamber, the printer farm, the vibration table, and the chemists who mix M20 on a Tuesday — they are all in Durango because the physics of hypergolic test and the economics of rapid iteration both favor a single, secure campus. The mountains are the backdrop. The vacuum chamber is the reason.

Multiple Hats: Daily Reality, Not Slogan

The current push, roles spanning test engineering, manufacturing, propulsion systems, and program management, reveals an organization where the boundaries between disciplines are porous by design. A Staff Project Engineer in Durango doesn't hand off a test plan to a separate test team; they write it, instrument the stand, run the firing, and feed the data back into the next design iteration. The mix of LabVIEW test automation, propulsion product leadership, and program management only works if people move fluidly across the hardware-software-schedule triangle.

Industry-wide data confirms this isn't unique to Agile. The Space Review reported that most companies are searching for "unicorns": people with levels of skill and experience that rarely exist. Aviation Week's 2023 workforce study found the industry trails tech and automotive peers on culture, values, leadership, and speed — a gap that mid-sized firms close by demanding broader individual scope. The Durango factor amplifies this. Unlike Los Angeles or Seattle, the local talent pool doesn't offer a deep bench of specialists who've only ever done one thing. Hiring from outside traditional aerospace pipelines means onboarding engineers from automotive, energy, or industrial automation who are used to owning a system end-to-end. They arrive expecting to touch hardware, write code, and talk to customers in the same week. The 24 roles added in the past week, including a Director of Marketing and Commercial Strategy based in Denver, signal a company scaling fast enough that process hasn't caught up to headcount. That gap is where the "multiple hats" culture lives: the person who can define a test campaign on Monday, machine a fixture on Tuesday, and brief a program review on Wednesday keeps the schedule from slipping.

Turnover data underscores the stakes. Aviation Week reported industry attrition rose to 7.1% in 2022 from 4.3% in 2017, with 69% of respondents saying turnover increased in the last year. At a prime or a massive prime-subcontractor, a departure triggers a requisition and a three-month backfill. At Agile's scale, it means the remaining test engineers absorb the standby shifts and the program manager rewrites the milestone chart. The cost of losing someone who spans three functions is multiples of their salary — The Space Review cited turnover costs up to 213% of the lost employee's compensation. That math drives the screening emphasis on demonstrated hardware experience and adaptability: the company can't afford to hire a specialist who freezes when the test stand throws a curveball.

Employee reviews across the mid-tier propulsion sector consistently surface three themes: autonomy, pace, and the absence of handoff bureaucracy. Engineers describe "designing the test, building the test, running the test" as a single loop rather than a relay race. They note the trade-off: less mentorship depth than a prime, more context-switching than a startup. For the candidate who clears Agile's screen, the one with hot-fire hours, a track record of fixing broken test rigs, and evidence they've shipped something across disciplines, that trade-off is the job. The screen selects for it. The culture demands it. The open roles exist because the work won't wait for a perfect specialist who doesn't exist.

Standing Out: Show the Hardware

Agile's screen filters for proof, not pedigree. The open roles, spanning test, manufacturing, program management, and systems engineering, share a common denominator: the hiring team wants to see hardware you have touched, broken, fixed, or qualified. Tailor each application to the specific requisition. A Staff LabVIEW Engineer role in Durango wants DAQ architecture and real-time control experience; a Propulsion Systems Product Lead VI in Seattle wants flight-software integration and supplier management. Copy-paste cover letters fail the keyword match and the human read.

Research the program, not just the company. Agile's public materials emphasize in-space chemical propulsion, hypergolic engines, and the $20 million Tulsa Space Test Center slated for 2027 completion. Reference the A110 or A220 engine families by name. Cite the Lockheed Martin Ventures funding round that unlocked the test-center build. Mention the 150-person headcount across five locations and nine states — it signals you understand the distributed manufacturing and test model. Generic "passion for space" language reads as filler; specific program awareness reads as readiness.

Use the CAR method (context, action, result) to keep answers tight. Agile's application fields impose word limits; the Rolls-Royce recruiting guide recommends CAR over STAR for exactly this reason. Example: "Context: test stand lacked automated abort sequencing. Action: wrote LabVIEW state machine with hardware-in-the-loop validation. Result: cut abort response from 2.3 seconds to 400 milliseconds, qualified on A110 hot-fire series." Three sentences. Quantified. Verifiable.

Show adaptability through scope. The Durango shop runs lean; engineers rotate between test operations, design reviews, and supplier trips. If you have only ever owned a subsystem in a 5,000-person prime contractor, spell out the moments you stepped outside your box — wrote a test procedure, negotiated a vendor deviation, briefed a program review. Location flexibility is a lever. Roles sit in Durango, Seattle, Denver, and remote-eligible states. If you can relocate to Durango for test-stand access or to Tulsa for the new center, say so. If you are remote, describe how you have collaborated across time zones on hardware programs — daily stand-ups with technicians, data reviews with analysts, design freezes with program managers. Agile's team is small enough that a targeted, informed message lands. The screen is not a gate; it is a filter for people who have already done the work.

The Talent War: Mid-Size Firms on the Front Line

Agile's hiring sprint is a single data point in a sector-wide scramble building for years. The 2022 Aerospace Industries Association and AIAA Workforce Study put industry attrition at 7.1%, up from 4.3% in 2017, with 70% of aerospace companies reporting increased turnover. The pay gap is stark: industry sources say mechanical and electrical engineering roles are outnumbered by more lucrative software opportunities by as much as 13 to 1, and entry-level software engineers in aerospace earn about half what Facebook, Amazon, or Google pay. The result? Tech talent outflows are potentially twice the rate of inflows, and the sector has seen an 8% decline in hiring of aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering graduates over five years, even as computer engineering graduates doubled.

Meanwhile, the workforce is aging out. Roughly a third of industry employees are 55 or older; 25% have 20-plus years of experience and are at or beyond retirement eligibility. The pandemic accelerated the bleed: Precision Castparts cut roughly 40% of its workforce, and many suppliers slashed headcount by half. When demand roared back, driven by commercial aviation recovery, defense spending, and a renewed push for deep-space exploration, the pipeline was hollow. One leading OEM estimates U.S. commercial aerospace alone will need 123,000 additional technicians over the next two decades. Employment in aerospace products and parts manufacturing sits at 534,442, but the skills mismatch is widening: 72% of organizations identify software and data as their primary need, and those roles account for 36% of open vacancies.

Mid-size firms feel the squeeze acutely. They lack the brand pull of a SpaceX or the deep pockets of a prime contractor, yet they need the same hands-on test engineers who can run a hot-fire campaign on day one. The industry's Cold War habit, poaching experienced personnel rather than training "green" cohorts, still dominates. Without robust onboarding, market-rate pay, and stay-on incentives to carry new hires past the 90-day mark, the talent shortage forces companies to overpay for external hires, which fuels the very attrition they're trying to stop.

The macro picture hasn't improved. As of early 2026, space-sector roles take a median of 10 weeks to fill, and 72% are rated difficult or very difficult. Over 67% of manufacturers in the National Association of Manufacturers' Q2 2024 outlook survey named workforce attraction and retention their top business challenge. McKinsey's study echoed the earlier finding on culture, values, diversity, leadership, and speed, leading only on "motivation." SpaceX's 15% headcount decline after its return-to-office mandate (versus 5% at Microsoft, 4% at Apple) illustrates how rigid policies amplify the bleed.

Agile's Durango model, remote-friendly for some roles and test-heavy on site, is an experiment in whether a mid-size firm can rewrite the playbook. The global space economy may top $1.8 trillion in the coming decades. The question isn't whether the industry will adapt. It's which companies figure out the workforce side before the retirement wave hits the test stand.
