Product Designer, AI Hardware & User Interface

Pocket
San Francisco, CA
Full Time
Compensation
$130,000–$165,000/year

Job Description

Pocket - a beautifully designed mobile device and the AI-powered apps that make everything you capture exponentially useful. We're a small team, pre-Series A, and we're serious about design.

This is a foundational role. As one team, you'll work directly with execs and IC’s alike on new product interfaces, our emerging design system, and the visual interaction language that will define how Pocket feels in the world.

Here's the thing that makes this different from every other design job posted this week: you'll hold in hand what you make. Physical products have a pull that screen-only work never quite matches. At Pocket, the hardware is the product. The software wraps around it. In the end, the experience is what you will design.

We're working at a moment when the tools, methods, and vocabulary of interface design are being rewritten. How we design, prototype, and define experiences may look nothing like current tools in one year. You'll be here when that shift begins (it already has).

This is an early hire. Equity reflects that. And you'll be mentored by - and teach - a CDO who chose this company for the same reasons you should.

What you'll own

  • Visual (Graphic) Design excellence
  • Design user interface for Pocket's companion apps and hardware interactions, with AI focus
  • Execute end-to-end experience design with empathy and craftsmanship
  • Contribute to the formation of a state-of-the-art design system
  • Specify motion and micro-interactions that communicate state and delight
  • Drive cohesive visual identity across all touchpoints
  • Bring aesthetic rigor and interaction clarity to every surface you touch
  • Support Senior and Principal Designers
  • Partner with engineering for spec fidelity; measure design quality in production
  • Run lightweight research (usability tests, intercepts); synthesize insights into decisions
  • Establish documentation: usage rules, accessibility, content and voice guidelines
  • Be a steward of an emerging world-class, high-design brand language
  • Enjoy the journey

What we're looking for

You’re a fit if you are curious, brave, relentlessly optimistic, and deeply thoughtful. Designers do empathy. You are an empath. And..

  • Fascination with Artificial Intelligence, and have a daily relationship with it
  • A trained Designer (accredited design program or other formal training)
  • 3–5 years of product design experience
  • Highly capable with all elements of Graphic Design and Brand
  • Fluent with iOS and Android guidelines and Web design standards
  • Expert in Figma and various prototyping tools (and willingness to learn)
  • UI Animation design proficiency and Motion sensibility
  • Experience with design systems, accessibility, and design-to-dev workflows
  • Are energized by ambiguity and curious about where the practice of design is heading
  • Hunger and the courage to do the best work of your career

Strong plus:

  • Have designed with AI Design workflows and can share new things with the team
  • Have shipped holistic hardware, software, and services
  • Content design/copywriting skill for in-product education and product engagement
  • Analytics-informed iteration; experimentation with clear success metrics

What we offer

  • Direct impact on a fast-growing YC company with strong early revenue traction
  • Work directly with senior team and founders who care about quality and move fast
  • High trust, high ownership environment
  • Best-in-class tools (design, motion, testing devices, prototyping kits)
