Job Description

About OpenAI

OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. We build models and products that help people learn, create, and solve problems—and we work to do so safely and responsibly.

About the Team

OpenAI’s products are talked about by people, not just press and pundits. More than 900 million people use our tools each week, learning from one other and passing along what works. Their stories shape our reputation and encourage others to try our products.

Our community team builds direct relationships & channels with people who use our tech then amplifies their stories and use cases so peers can learn from them and channels their insights to our product and research teams.

About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Technical Community Program Manager to help manage and scale a high-signal community of advanced ChatGPT Pro users.

This is a hands-on, technically fluent role at the intersection of community-building, product enablement, user research, product education, and editorial storytelling.

You do not need to be a full-time software engineer, but you should be comfortable understanding technical workflows, asking sharp technical questions, using the latest AI tools, and helping advanced users explain what they are building.

You will report to the Head of Pro Subscriber Community and will be based in New York City.

In this role, you will:

Run and grow a high-signal community

  • Help manage and deepen engagement with the ChatGPT Pro cohort of advanced users across disciplines

  • Design and execute high-touch community programming, including product demos, office hours, show-and-tell sessions, peer-learning formats, and in-person events

  • Build repeatable systems for onboarding, engagement, retention, and member communications

Build deep relationships with exceptional users

  • Identify, recruit, and onboard new individuals doing high-impact work with ChatGPT and Codex

  • Conduct in-depth interviews and maintain ongoing relationships to understand workflows, decision-making, and real-world applications

  • Act as a trusted point of contact between these users and OpenAI

  • Create an experience that is worthy of users’ time, expertise, and trust

Support advanced technical workflows

  • Help advanced Pro users understand and operationalize new capabilities across ChatGPT, Codex, agents, and related products

  • Run technical office hours, workflow reviews, demos, and peer-learning sessions for users building complex systems

  • Partner with DevEx, Product, and Research to route technical questions, bugs, edge cases, and workflow feedback to the right teams

  • Translate between highly technical users, non-technical experts becoming builders, and internal teams trying to understand real-world usage

Surface and document how ChatGPT and Codex are actually being used

  • Curate and evaluate user chats and workflows for editorial publication, internal learning, and product feedback

  • Identify patterns across use cases and distill them into actionable insights, educational assets, and reusable examples

  • Uphold technical accuracy, domain accuracy, user consent, and privacy across a wide range of fields, including science, law, finance, education, and creative work

Tell the story of the community

  • Produce user profiles and case studies

  • Contribute to editorial channels including Substack, social content, newsletters, and internal storytelling

  • Shape how we present advanced AI usage to both internal teams and external audiences

  • Collaborate closely with users and internal partners to ensure stories are accurate, compelling, and respectful of context

Support product testing and feedback loops

  • Help organize and run small cohorts of Pro users to test new models and features

  • Work closely with users to document their experiments, successes, and friction points

  • Synthesize feedback clearly, distinguishing recurring patterns from isolated anecdotes

  • Bridge the gap between expert users who are becoming builders and tools such as Codex, helping them test, understand, and apply agentic capabilities in serious real-world workflows.

Spot emerging trends in AI usage

  • Identify new patterns in how advanced users are interacting with ChatGPT and Codex

  • Track shifts in workflows, prompting strategies, and tool adoption

  • Surface recommendations to relevant internal teams and help explain why emerging behaviors may matter at scale

Why this role matters

We are at a moment where advanced users are doing remarkable work with AI, but much of that knowledge is fragmented, undocumented, or invisible.

This role is about making frontier legible and useful:

  • Turning individual experiments into shared knowledge

  • Helping users learn from each other

  • Creating a reliable feedback loop between real-world usage and product development

Done well, this work will shape not just the community, but how ChatGPT and Codex evolve.

Must-haves

  • Exceptional curiosity about how people work and solve problems

  • Highly organized and able to build systems, manage competing priorities, and close loops reliably

  • Good taste, you know what is interesting, novel, and worth sharing

  • Strong technical fluency. You may not be a software engineer, but you can understand technical workflows, reason through product behavior, and communicate credibly with builders

  • Hands-on experience using AI tools for complex work, ideally including Codex, agents, APIs, automation, or technical prototyping

  • Ability to help users break down workflows, identify friction, document edge cases, and translate technical usage into clear product feedback

  • Strong writing and editing skills, especially for turning complex technical behavior into precise, accessible stories and examples

Nice-to-haves

The strongest candidates will often be a hybrid of two or more of the following:

  • A developer advocate or technical community builder who wants to work with expert consumer users rather than only API developers

  • A technically fluent AI power user who has built sophisticated workflows with Codex, agents, automation, or APIs and can teach others

  • A product-minded technical writer or developer educator who can turn complex workflows into clear examples, stories, and feedback

Across all archetypes, we are looking for:

  • Taste: strong judgment about what is worth attention

  • Curiosity: genuine interest in how people think and work

  • Agency: ability to operate independently and build from scratch

  • Range: comfort moving across disciplines and levels of abstraction

  • Rigor: ability to distinguish signal from noise and document insights accurately
