
Senior Software Engineering Manager, Simulation Infrastructure

About the Role
Muon seeks a Software Engineering Manager to lead the Simulation infrastructure team. This team builds high-performance simulations of our spacecraft and related systems, enabling Muon to make informed decisions about mission proposals as well as the design, manufacture, and operation of our orbital satellites.
In this role, you will grow the people, processes, and technical capabilities of a multidisciplinary team of physics-based modelling experts, product development engineers, and data analysts. You will collaborate closely with the team’s architect and other engineering leaders, and participate in all stages of the company’s business from proposal bidding to on-orbit mission performance analysis. And you will define and deliver best-in-the-industry simulations and analytic capabilities to keep Muon delivering ground-breaking missions for years to come.
This position is hybrid and requires working on-site in our San Jose, CA office three days per week.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop software engineers and scientists who build critical numerical modelling infrastructure, and perform comprehensive data analysis
- Work with a variety of partners to synthesize a far-reaching team roadmap aligned with Muon’s priorities
- Guide the execution of foundational projects to deliver the best possible understanding of the performance of complex space systems
- Develop and track important quality and performance metrics to drive improvement in mission-critical systems
- Collaborate with your leadership colleagues to architect organizational process that’ll serve for years to come
- Manage team capacity, staffing, and growth, including hiring, coaching, and performance development
- Be a voice of responsible and compassionate leadership in a fast-growing, dynamic workplace
Qualifications
- BS/MS or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- 5+ years of software engineering experience and 3+ years of experience managing software engineering teams building production systems
- Demonstrated experience managing teams delivering on physical simulations and data analytics programs
- Domain expertise of the application of physics-based modeling to the design, implementation, behavior, and testing of complex hardware
- Proven track record managing teams building and maintaining reliable, scalable software tools
- Extensive experience with software project resource estimation and scheduling
- Accomplished history of hiring, training, and promoting software engineers and data scientists
- Significant experience developing in languages such as C++, Python, TypeScript, or Julia
- Strong communication skills, and comfort working with cross-functional stakeholders
Nice-to-have Skills
- Familiarity with statistical analytic methods
- Familiarity with failure analysis methods
- Experience with Software-in-the-Loop (SITL) simulation testing
- Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) as it relates to physics simulations
- Experience with event streaming and batch data processing pipelines
- Knowledge of orbital dynamics as it pertains to spacecraft operations
- Familiarity with space industry technology, terminology, and practices
Salary
The salary range for this role is $241,000 - $266,000, plus a competitive equity grant and comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location as assessed during the interview process.
