Sr Manufacturing Project Engineer

Job Description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. The Vertical Integration Strategy and Execution team stands up new in-house manufacturing capability for critical hardware.

You will design and stand up new production lines, taking hardware from concept through process development to a running line. That means building the manufacturing plan, laying out the factory and work cells, defining the flow line and its stations, specifying the equipment and utilities, and owning the schedule, budget, and requirements through operational readiness. You will do this on greenfield floor space, working from a blank plan rather than an existing line.

You will model each line before it is built. That includes process simulation to validate throughput, station balance, and material flow, and 3D layout models of the floor and installed equipment to verify fit, clearances, utility routing, and installation sequence. These models are how you prove out a line and justify the capital to build it.

You will stand up multiple lines over the next several years, often with two or three efforts at different stages at once. Along the way you will build the layout, capacity, simulation, and cost models that make each successive line faster to design. You will work across engineering, supply chain, facilities, and production to qualify each line and hand it over.

Qualifications

  • Passion for our mission and vision!
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Systems, or related engineering discipline, plus 6+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Experience standing up a new production line or facility on greenfield space, including developing the layout, material flow, and workcell designs from a blank floor plan
  • Experience designing flow lines for new products, including station definition, work content allocation, takt and line balancing, and capacity modeling
  • Experience building simulation models of production lines to validate throughput, station balance, and material flow prior to capital commitment, using FlexSim, Simio, AnyLogic, Plant Simulation, or equivalent
  • Experience developing 3D layout or facility models to validate equipment fit, clearances, utility routing, and installation sequencing, using Revit, Navisworks, NX, CATIA, AutoCAD, or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes for complex, low-volume hardware, with the ability to translate process requirements into line and station design
  • Experience defining equipment, tooling, utility, and facility requirements and carrying capital projects through installation and qualification
  • Proven success owning technical projects end to end, including schedule, budget, and requirements, with multiple efforts running concurrently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical recommendations and capital justifications to leadership
  • Hands-on manufacturing or process engineering experience with electromechanical assemblies and electronic hardware, including experience designing lines for rate rather than one-off or prototype build

Desired

  • Experience standing up more than one new line or facility
  • Experience ramping a production line from low initial rate to sustained high volume (unless promoted to required)
  • Experience building reusable planning or simulation models that others adopted
  • Experience integrating process simulation with 3D layout models on the same line design effort
  • Experience in a regulated, high-complexity manufacturing environment
  • Experience in an engineering-development organization
  • Experience providing technical direction or mentorship to other engineers
  • Six Sigma or Lean certification
  • Experience with reality capture or point cloud data for as-built verification
  • Experience connecting simulation models to live production data for ongoing throughput and bottleneck analysis
  • SQL or other coding ability

Culture Statement

Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building an authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
