Mechanical Engineering Placement (6 Months), New Grad

$8,000–$10,000/month

Job Description

About the company

Aseon Labs builds robotic pitstops for self-driving cars. A depot in a box for charging, cleaning and inspecting autonomous fleets directly in operating zones.

Autonomous driving is working. The operational layer around it is not. Today, fleets lose significant time and money travelling to centralised depots for charging, cleaning and servicing, creating dead miles, lower uptime and operational bottlenecks that limit fleet scale.

Aseon Pods are modular, rapidly deployable robotic stations that keep autonomous fleets operating near demand. By bringing operations directly into demand zones, Aseon helps fleet operators increase uptime, reduce operational overhead and scale markets more efficiently without relying on large centralised depots.

George and Dan are second-time founders and mobility infrastructure operators. Previously, they built and scaled Pushme to 5,000 stations across 40 cities and were acquired by TIER-Dott. Aseon Labs is backed by Y Combinator (YC P26), has just closed a $10M raise, and is headquartered in Redwood City.

About the role

Aseon is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to start now and work directly alongside the founding team on the mechanical design and production implementation of the Aseon Pod. This is a six-month, in-person placement based in our Redwood City office and workshop, built for someone finishing a master's degree or undergraduate engineering programme seeking ownership and hands-on hardware exposure that conventional graduate roles or corporate rotation programmes can’t offer.

You will report directly to the founders and work day-to-day across mechanical, robotics and controls disciplines. At a company this early, your work is not simulated or set aside as a training exercise. What you design, prototype and help ship goes directly into hardware that gets deployed in the field. Strong performance over the six months carries a genuine path to a full-time offer.

You should already have a track record of doing hard technical work well before anyone asked you to: research projects you drove yourself, competition teams you built or led, prototypes you designed and machined because you care.

What you will do

  • Work alongside founding mechanical engineers on the mechanical design and architecture of the Aseon Pod, including structural assemblies, robot mounting systems, gantries, end-effectors, vehicle interfaces and service access features
  •  Take real design problems from concept through CAD, prototyping and testing, with direct input into decisions that ship
  • Collaborate across functions with the robotics, electrical and software engineers to integrate subsystems into a single working product
  • Build, test, debug and iterate on physical prototypes in our Redwood City workshop
  • Support supplier and manufacturing partner coordination on fabrication, tooling and early production runs
  • Help identify where Aseon should design custom hardware, modify existing products or integrate off-the-shelf solutions
  • Operate with genuine autonomy on defined workstreams under the senior mechanical engineer

What you will bring

Must have

  • Recent Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Bachelor’s programme
  • Prior project or internship experience in a robotics or hardware startup context
  • Ability to propose unconventional solutions
  • Technical precision with an ability to make design decisions backed by underlying mechanics
  • Command of 3D CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA, NX or equivalent), including some experience with FEA or basic simulation tools
  • Rigorous fundamentals in mechanisms, tolerancing and electromechanical system design, and familiarity with common fabrication methods such as sheet metal, machining, 3D printing or moulding
  • Demonstrable hands-on project experience, outside of coursework: FSAE, Formula Student, robotics competition teams, personal fabrication projects, research builds, or a prior hardware internship where you owned a real deliverable
  • Comfort working across mechanical, electrical and robotics boundaries and picking up context quickly
  • Ability to work with genuine agency: making sound calls with limited resources and incomplete information, in a small, fast-moving team
  • Strong communication skills, able to work directly with engineers and founders and shift between technical and non-technical concepts with ease

Useful to have

  • Experience designing or building larger-scale mechanical or infrastructure equipment
  • Deep grasp and passion for robotics
  • Exposure to electrical or firmware fundamentals, from working on integrated hardware projects

Why this role

  • You will get more ownership and autonomy in six months here than in several years at a large engineering company.
  • Working directly with senior mechanical engineers inside the founding team
  • Potential to convert to a full-time founding offer (performance-dependent)

Recruitment Timeline

  • Founder screening 1 (20 mins)
  • Founder screening 2 (20 mins)
  • Technical interview with senior mechanical engineer (1 hr)
  • Decision within 1-2 weeks
