Wolf Lepenies is the Professor of Sociology at Free University of Berlin since 1971. After working for several years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Wolf was admitted to the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin which he directed as Vice-Chancellor from 1986 to 2001. In addition to holding an honorary Doctorate from Sorbonne University in Paris, Lepenies is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee at the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung (Cologne) and a Member of the Supervisory Board at Axel Springer AG. In 2006, he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Wolf received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Münster in 1967. Wolf was born in the East Prussian town of Deuthen (Allenstein) in 1941, is married to Annette Lepenies and has three children.
