Joe Hutt

Joe Hutt is a seasoned engineering executive in the electronic design automation (EDA) software industry. Hutt has over 25 years of experience in building R&D teams with some of the EDA industry’s most successful companies. Joe previously served as the President and CEO of Pyxis Technology, a Formative Ventures portfolio company. Hutt was previously on the senior executive team at Magma Design Automation, where he served as the VP of Technical Sales for 2 years, and as the VP of Engineering for 3 years. As VP of Technical Sales, Hutt rebuilt the North American sales team and created the Design Services organization, both of which set the stage for increased sales and led to the Company’s very successful IPO in November of 2001. As the VP Engineering from 1998-2001, Hutt built the R&D group from 8 engineers to over 60, where he hired and integrated experienced development personnel in order to complete a fully integrated design environment. This team included top R&D engineers in California and in the Netherlands. Prior to joining Magma, Hutt was the Director and VP of the Advanced Technology Group at Synopsys. He managed the Synopsys Research organization, and was technical director for new programs involving IC design. Before Synopsys, Hutt was the Program Director and Senior Project manager for VLSI Design systems at IBM, where he directed 200+ R&D personnel responsible for the delivery of design systems for IBM microprocessors that were developed in Austin, Rochester and Poughkeepsie, as well as the Somerset joint partnership. Hutt managed a $30M annual budget for design tool support. From 1991-1993, he was the Project Manager of Design Systems at Somerset, the IBM, Motorola, and Apple joint design center for PowerPC development. Hutt was responsible for developing the design methodology and creating the initial design environment used for the first three microprocessors designed at Somerset. Hutt held various other engineering management positions with IBM since 1976. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Union College in New York in 1975.
