George Carmany has over 45 years of international investment and life sciences experience. He began his career in the international banking division of Bankers Trust Company, and subsequently held executive positions at American Express Company, where he served as Senior Vice President - Corporate Strategic Planning; Senior Executive Vice President of American Express Bank; and Senior Executive Vice President and Director of The Boston Company, the company’s investment management and private banking subsidiary. Upon the sale of The Boston Company to Mellon Financial Corporation he established G. W. Carmany and Company, an advisory business in financial services and health care. Mr. Carmany is a Director of the Macquarie Infrastructure Company and BreatheAmerica; served internationally until 2010 as a Director of Sun Life Financial, Toronto, Canada; and is a Senior Advisor to Brown Brothers Harriman and EnGeneIC, Ltd., Sydney, Australia. Until 2005 he was Chairman and CEO of Helicon Therapeutics, a company founded by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Roche Pharmaceuticals, and OSI Pharmaceuticals. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Education of the Harvard Medical School; Past Chairman of The New England Medical Center and the Board of Associates of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research; served for twenty years as a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of Bentley University, and as Vice President of the Alumni Council of Amherst College, from which he holds the college’s Medal for Eminent Service. Mr. Carmany received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College. He joined Essex Woodlands as Senior Advisor in June 2010.
