Ultima Genomics is a rapidly growing company that is developing ground-breaking genomics technologies. Our mission is to continuously drive the scale of genomic information to enable unprecedented advances in biology and improvements in human health. We have developed a foundational new approach to sequencing at scale that overcomes limitations due to the high costs of current technologies. We are well-funded and have raised approximately $600 million from global top-tier investors. Our team brings together unique and diverse expertise across multiple disciplines, from healthcare and life sciences, to engineering, to technology and software and beyond. We are a collaborative group, including successful entrepreneurs, chemists, hardware and software engineers, genomics and biotechnology experts, molecular and computational biologists, software and algorithm experts, and operations and commercial leaders. Join us to develop and commercialize technologies that unleash the power of genomics at scale and empower the future of human health.

We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Manufacturing Engineer to join our team!

As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you will play an important role in the development and commercialization of technology and products that will accelerate our understanding of life, biology and disease and transform large industries. You will work as a part of Manufacturing Engineering Team supporting production on preparing, installing and configuring a variety of subassembly and system level components.

This is a full-time onsite position at our Fremont, CA location.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Responsible for all aspects of production documentation for complex DNA sequencing systems and sub-assemblies including Incoming Quality Control (IQC), build, test, and rework procedures
  • Review, create, and update documentation for high volume procurement such as drawings for cables, Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBA), electromechanical assemblies, and Off-The-Shelf (OTS) parts and subsystems
  • Provide vendor feedback and review as needed to maintain incoming product quality and compliance
  • Support new product development, engineering test, manufacturing test, and manufacturing and contract manufacturing (CM) outsourcing
  • Work closely with R&D teams on design transfer, Engineering Change Order (ECO) implementation and Common Industrial Protocol (CIP)
  • Facilitate and participate in feasibility studies alongside development engineering to build the product validation and test requirements/equipment to support manufacturing
  • Be "first line of defense” for manufacturing issues and escalate through appropriate chains of communication to address them in a timely fashion
  • Troubleshoot and conduct root cause analysis of production equipment and failed Operational Qualification (OQ) for electrical and electromechanical assemblies, and PCBAs
  • Own continuous improvement of existing products to end of product life cycle
  • Follow closely and manage the steps from development to full production; calling for a design freeze, pre-production test and validation builds (pilot builds), lead cross-functional communication between development, procurement, manufacturing, quality, and field operations
  • Develop and maintain project schedules for design freezes for Bill of Materials (BOM) release, long lead time orders and risk buys
  • Review designs to identify opportunities for improvement prior to release to production
  • Maintain visibility and coordination of components for field testing
  • Support quality in First Article Inspection (FAI)
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM); Design for Assembly (DFA); and Design for Quality (DFQ) principles to optimize design and production
  • Plan and execute change control implementation
  • Understanding of test fixtures and system level integration, including Off-The-Shelf Input/Output OTS I/O vs in-house I/O, interfacing with firmware, software, and scripting; ability to set clear and qualified configurations for fixture and tool stability
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience taking products from an R&D environment to full scale capital equipment production in the 10’s to 100’s and beyond
  • Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing environment building, testing, or troubleshooting automated instruments or robotic systems involving electrical and electro-mechanical assemblies, with a working understanding of their firmware and software-level control interfaces
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting PCB schematics, board layout, harness drawings, and multi-level BOMs to support build, inspection, and incoming quality review of electrical assemblies
  • Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMMs), and other bench test equipment to diagnose quality or manufacturing defects at the board, harness, and system level
  • Experience working as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) design owner
  • Excellent technical writing skills to generate clear, precise documentation such as manufacturing instruction, rework, and deviation documents
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, New Product Introduction (NPI) activities, and product development lifecycle
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) experience with Arena or equivalent for multi-level nested BOMs and part management of assemblies up to several thousand-line items
  • Experience with electrical CAD packages such as Altium, or KiCAD for PCB design and the ability to read schematics and understand board layout
  • Experience with manufacturing and design of PCBAs, knowledge of In Process Control (IPC) standards, ISO 13485 or 9001, and familiarity with vendor management is a plus

About Ultima Genomics

Ultima Genomics is unleashing the power of genomics at scale. Our mission is to continuously drive the scale of genomic information to enable unprecedented advances in biology and improvements in human health. With humanity on the cusp of a biological revolution, there is a virtually endless need for more genomic information to address biology’s complexity and dynamic change—and a further need to challenge conventional next-generation sequencing technologies. Ultima’s revolutionary new sequencing architecture drives down the costs of sequencing to help overcome the tradeoffs that scientists and clinicians are forced to make between the breadth, depth, and frequency with which they use genomic information. The new sequencing architecture was designed to scale far beyond conventional sequencing technologies, lower the cost of genomic information and catalyze the next phase of genomics in the 21st century.
