WHAT YOU’LL DO

As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the New Initiatives team, you will set the technical direction for a new, zero-to-one initiative focused on applying AI to how care decisions are made in oncology, helping people receive the right, evidence-based treatment at the moment it matters. Working closely with senior clinical, operations, product, and business leaders, you will shape the strategy, identify the highest-value opportunities, and lead the most complex and consequential technical work needed to build a solution with the potential to become a category-defining platform.

This is a hands-on, full-stack role for an engineer who can operate at both the strategic and implementation levels, moving fluidly between learning from users, influencing product direction, designing long-term architecture, and shipping production code. You will establish the technical foundation across web applications, APIs, data integrations, AI systems, and cloud infrastructure, while creating patterns that can scale across future products and initiatives. Much of this work sits at the intersection of applied AI, clinical guidelines, operational workflows, and automated decisioning in a regulated setting where accuracy, auditability, and trust are non-negotiable. As company priorities evolve, you may also step into established product areas to solve high-impact technical problems that span teams and systems.

• Set the technical vision and lead execution for a major zero-to-one initiative, from early discovery and prototyping through production launch, iteration, and sustained delivery.

• Partner with senior clinical, policy, product, and operations leaders to shape the strategy, identify the highest-value opportunities, and translate complex care-decision workflows into systems that execute reliably.

• Own the long-term architecture across web interfaces, APIs and services, data models, integrations, AI systems, and cloud infrastructure while remaining hands-on in the most complex and consequential areas.

• Build and establish patterns for polished front-end experiences with Vue.js and TypeScript and reliable back-end services with Python, FastAPI, and Postgres, deployed and operated in AWS.

• Lead the design and productionization of LLM-powered capabilities for high-stakes care decisions, including automated decisioning, document understanding, and conversational experiences.

• Define the evaluation, prompting, observability, and guardrail standards that make automated decisions accurate, safe, auditable, and defensible to clinical, provider, and health-plan stakeholders.

• Establish how the team uses AI-enabled development tools to accelerate the path from idea to working prototype and turn validated concepts into durable products.

• Navigate ambiguity and make sound architectural decisions that balance speed with security, privacy, reliability, regulatory requirements, and long-term scalability.

• Create reusable technical foundations and patterns that accelerate future initiatives and influence how AI-powered products are built across the company.

• Communicate complex tradeoffs clearly, build alignment among senior leaders and cross-functional partners, and drive decisions when the path forward is uncertain.

• Raise the engineering bar across teams through technical leadership, mentorship, and effective practices in system design, testing, code review, documentation, and technical decision-making.

• Build systems that improve the speed and quality of care decisions while reducing friction for the clinicians and patients who rely on them.

WHAT YOU’VE DONE

• Set the technical direction for complex software products or platforms and led them from an initial idea through launch, scale, and sustained production operation.

• Led high-impact zero-to-one or early-stage initiatives when the problem, requirements, and path forward were not fully defined.

• Delivered polished front-end applications and robust back-end services while remaining hands-on in the most technically complex areas.

• Worked deeply with JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks such as Vue.js, React, or Angular and back-end technologies comparable to Python and FastAPI.

• Designed scalable APIs, data models, and system architectures; worked with relational databases such as Postgres; and operated production services in a cloud environment such as AWS.

• Established effective ways for teams to use AI-enabled development tools to prototype, evaluate, and ship production software with high velocity.

• Designed and shipped LLM-powered product capabilities and developed the evaluation, observability, and guardrail approaches needed to make them reliable in production.

• Made consequential architectural decisions that balanced speed, user needs, security, reliability, regulatory requirements, and long-term scalability.

• Succeeded within a new business line, internal venture, incubation team, or similarly ambiguous and fast-changing environment.

• Influenced senior product and business leaders through strong technical judgment, aligned teams around complex decisions, and raised engineering quality beyond the systems and code you personally owned.

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of the total compensation package that also includes equity, benefits, and other opportunities at Thyme Care. Individual pay decisions are based on several factors, including qualifications, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to other Thyme Care employees. The base salary for this role is $220,000 - $260,000 The salary range could be lower or higher than this if the role is hired at another level. This position is also bonus-eligible.
