Mechatronics | Mechanical Engineering internship: modal analysis tooling

Job Description

Introduction

The mechatronics department for the Projection Optics Box (POB) in ASML’s EUV systems develops ultra-stable structures and actuation solutions for mirror alignment. You will contribute to improving system stability by detecting unintended mechanical shortcuts between structural frames. These shortcuts can reduce performance and are difficult to localize with visual inspection alone. In this internship: you will help turn measurement data into actionable insight. Your work supports high-precision performance in EUV manufacturing.

Your assignment

In complex mechanical systems, hidden connections between frames can disturb dynamic behavior and reduce positioning accuracy. In this internship you will investigate how changes in dynamic behavior reveal the presence and location of these shortcuts. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Analyze measurement data to detect changes in system dynamics

  • Perform modal fitting on frequency response data

  • Compare results with reference data from nominal conditions

  • Identify patterns in mode shape variations linked to structural shortcuts

  • Develop software tooling for data analysis and visualization

  • Validate findings with engineering insights and simulations

  • Present results and recommendations to the team

This is a master non-thesis internship for minimum 4 months and maximum 6 months, for 5 days per week (2 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of September 2026.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics or a related field

  • Have experience with system identification and dynamic modeling

  • Have practical experience using MATLAB or similar tools

  • Show analytical thinking and a structured working approach

  • Are collaborative and can also work independently

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
