Electrical Safety Engineer

Introduction to the Job

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Safety Engineer to act as the subject matter expert for electrical safety within our development organization. This role is critical in ensuring that new and existing products meet internal safety requirements and comply with applicable industry standards. You will collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, customer support, and EHS teams to embed safety into both product design and operational use.

Role and Responsibilities

Operational & Workplace Safety (EHS)

  • Independently lead technical discussions on test setup safety, identifying risks and proposing mitigation strategies.
    • Maintain a broad understanding of multiple safety domains, including: Dangerous gasses, Electrical, Ergonomics, Lifting , Materials & Substances, Mechanical, Radiation, Thermal, Working at height
  • Lead or contribute to incident and near-miss investigations, performing root cause analysis and defining corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conduct and support lab inspections to ensure compliance with EHS and electrical safety requirements.
  • Drive and sustain 5S+1 practices within labs and technical workspaces to improve safety, organization, and efficiency.
  • Ensure proper documentation, tracking, and closure of safety actions using the Intelex management system.
  • Represent EHS (for instance by organizing monthly safety meetings with lab owners) to ensure alignment between design safety, operational safety, and workplace safety practices.

Product Safety & Engineering Integration

  • Work with NPI (New Product Introduction) design teams to ensure compliance with electrical safety requirements as defined in SAF documentation.
  • Identify key electrical safety risks early in the development phase (pre-KD3) and drive mitigation strategies. Define, propose, and lead Safety Risk Assessments (SRA), including identification of relevant topics and methodologies.
  • Participate in design reviews, including Critical Design Reviews (CDR), ensuring electrical safety requirements are met.
  • Ensure proper electrical safety verification strategies, including test methodologies and validation approaches.
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Customer Support to ensure safe operation and service of systems by taking the lead in risk assessments across NPI and Installed Base (full lifecycle)

Competence Building

  • Act as the knowledge owner of electrical safety competence, providing guidance to engineering teams.
  • Apply deep expertise in electrical design concepts impacting human safety, including grounding, insulation, HV systems, interlocks, and fault protection.
  • Define and maintain the electrical safety competence framework.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for electrical engineers to improve safety awareness and competency.
  • Drive continuous improvement of organizational electrical safety maturity.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of electrical safety standards and regulations.
  • Assess impact of evolving standards and update SAF documentation accordingly to maintain compliance.

Education and Experience

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of electrical system design experience, OR
  • MS in Electrical Engineering with 2+ years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated experience applying electrical safety standards and conducting risk assessments in product design
  • Experience in lab or manufacturing safety environments including incident investigations, inspections, audits and EHS management systems (e.g. Intelex or similar)
  • Experience leading cross-functional safety initiatives without direct authority in complex equipment or industrial systems.
  • Experience mentoring or acting as subject matter expert in electrical safety.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of electrical safety standards, such as: SEMI S2, IEC 60204-1, IEC61010-1, NFPA 70 / 70E / 79, OSHA, UL
  • Knowledge of safety risk assessment methodologies: ISO 12100, SEMI S10
  • Experience with EHS processes and systems, including Lab / safety inspections, 5S / 5S+1 implementation, Incident investigation and root cause analysis
  • Experience using Intelex or similar EHS management systems for tracking incidents, audits and corrective actions.
  • Deep technical expertise in electrical safety design principles and hazard mitigation.
  • Broad engineering knowledge with the ability to interface across disciplines.

Professional Skills

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to lead without authority and influence design decisions.
  • Proven capability to: Lead discussions, Drive alignment, Identify risks early, Deliver predictable outcomes
  • Comfortable operating with high-level managerial guidance and autonomy.
  • Ability to translate theoretical safety standards into practical design solutions.

Additional Information

  • Primary location: San Jose, CA
  • Limited travel (<15%), with occasional collaboration across global teams.

The current base annual salary range for this role is currently:

$130,500-195,750

Pay scales are determined by role, level, location and alignment with market data. Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of several factors that that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, relevant education and experience, certifications, abilities of the candidate and pay relative to other team members.

Employees will also receive eight (8) hours of vacation leave every month and (13) paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
