Role Overview
As Chief of Staff to the CEO, you will sit at the center of how this company operates and makes decisions. You will own the operating cadence, drive cross-functional initiatives from problem definition to resolution, and handle the work that keeps the CEO focused on the highest-leverage problems. That means being equally comfortable in a budget-versus-actual, a headcount model, or an organizational question that needs someone to push it to closure.
You think clearly under pressure, communicate with precision, and know how to move work forward with the best judgement. You understand how AI tools can accelerate serious work, and you use them that way. If you want a front row seat to how a CEO makes decisions and how a growth-stage company actually scales, this role delivers that.
Who You Are
Strategic Partner to the CEO:
Trusted confidant and advisor to the CEO. Helping think through complex strategic, financial, and personnel decisions, and ensuring they are executed upon.
Ability to disseminate information and communicate ideas on behalf of the CEO to the Executive Leadership Team and external stakeholders.
Track record of “clearing the path”. Taking ownership of day-to-day operations and cross-functional processes to create more leverage for the CEO.
Strong financial and operational judgment: able to read and synthesize P&L data, budget variances, and headcount plans to inform executive-level decision-making with clarity and speed.
Strategic thinker, excellent problem solver, and first-class communicator.
Natural curiosity, particularly around how AI is being adopted across industries and how it drives measurable ROI, and the ability to bring those insights back to inform how OpenGov operates and competes.
Excellent Operator:
Ability to lead and drive timely execution of business critical and cross-functional strategic initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
Seamlessly break down large and complex concepts into actionable tasks and steps.
Experience building and maintaining an operating cadence that promotes alignment, accountability, and knowledge-sharing at the executive level.
Ability to synthesize complex, competing information quickly and form an independent point of view — then move work forward decisively, even under pressure and without complete information.
Clear Communicator:
Track record of effectively communicating, influencing, and driving alignment across executive leadership and beyond.
High EQ with the ability to identify the needs of OpenGov’s Executive Leadership Team, build strong relationships among internal and external stakeholders, and promote a culture of trust and transparency.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and attention to detail.
Customer Obsessed:
Genuine commitment to understanding the needs of OpenGov's customers and ensuring their voice is represented in executive-level decisions and company priorities.
Approaches every cross-functional initiative with a lens of customer impact — not just internal efficiency.
What You'll Do
Own the company-wide operating cadence: company all-hands meetings, Executive Leadership Team meetings, and quarterly offsites. This includes agenda-setting, logistics, notetaking, and follow through on decisions.
Own the company's goal-setting process end to end, from framework design and OKR cycle coordination to tracking progress and holding teams accountable to outcomes.
Drive alignment and accountability across the Executive Leadership Team, ensuring the organization stays focused on the highest-priority challenges and executes with urgency.
Triage and manage competing priorities for the CEO: synthesize complex inputs, frame decision options, and surface key insights to inform executive-level choices.
Conduct ad-hoc financial and operational analyses diagnosing business challenges and recommending tailored, scalable solutions.
Partner with Finance on review cycles and headcount analysis; synthesizing financial data into clear, actionable recommendations for the CEO.
Lead and project manage company-wide strategic initiatives; bring together cross-functional stakeholders and drive decisions and action.
Develop and document internal processes for communications, operations, and other organizational needs.
Work closely with the Executive Assistant to the CEO to ensure appropriate management of the CEO's calendar, prioritizing tasks and meetings in alignment with organizational goals.
Serve as a key liaison between the CEO, the Executive Leadership Team, and external partners, adapting your communication style to build trust and accelerate decision-making.
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's degree required; MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
Strong financial acumen: demonstrated ability to interpret P&L statements, headcount plans, and translate financial data into clear executive recommendations.
Proven track record managing complex, cross-functional projects or programs end-to-end, with expertise in establishing systems to track progress and accountability.
Strong familiarity with AI-enabled tools and a willingness to champion AI adoption across the organization.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
Strong analytical capabilities: comfortable building analyses, interpreting data trends, and presenting actionable recommendations.
Demonstrated commitment to honesty, ethical conduct, and maintaining the highest levels of confidentiality.
Passion for OpenGov's mission of powering more effective and accountable government.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in investment banking, private equity, venture capital, top-tier management consulting, Vertical Software, or as a Chief of Staff to a senior executive in a high-growth technology company.
Deep understanding of SaaS business models, with experience supporting financial planning or investor-facing processes.
Experience supporting a CEO or C-suite executive
Deep expertise in operational best practices and goal-setting frameworks (e.g., OKRs) that drive accountability and measurable outcomes.
Familiarity with GovTech or the public sector software market.
Compensation:
San Francisco, CA: $150,000 - $200,000
On target ranges above include base plus a portion of variable compensation that is earned based on company and individual performance.
The final compensation will be determined by a number of factors such as qualifications, expertise, and the candidate’s geographical location.
