Do NASA internships provide housing in 2026?
NASA does not provide housing for interns. However, the stipend is designed to cover living expenses, and most centers have intern housing resources.
What NASA provides instead
NASA interns receive a stipend (not hourly wages) that varies by education level and center:
| Education Level | Typical Stipend | Weekly Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | $7,000–$9,500/term | $580–$790 |
| Graduate (MS) | $9,000–$11,000/term | $750–$920 |
| Graduate (PhD) | $10,000–$12,000/term | $830–$1,000 |
Stipend amounts vary by center and are adjusted periodically.
Housing by center
| Center | Average Rent (1BR) | Affordable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JSC (Houston) | $1,000–$1,400 | Yes | Clear Lake/Webster area popular with interns |
| MSFC (Huntsville) | $800–$1,100 | Yes | Very affordable |
| KSC (Florida) | $1,000–$1,400 | Moderate | Cocoa Beach, Titusville |
| JPL (Pasadena) | $1,600–$2,200 | Tight | LA-area pricing |
| GSFC (Greenbelt) | $1,400–$1,800 | Tight | DC-area pricing |
| Ames (Bay Area) | $1,800–$2,500 | Difficult | Stipend may not cover rent |
| Langley (Hampton) | $900–$1,200 | Yes | Affordable area |
How interns find housing
- NASA intern Facebook/Discord groups — Each center has active intern housing groups where people find roommates
- University housing databases — Some centers partner with local universities for summer housing
- Intern coordinators — Your NASA mentor or intern coordinator can connect you with past interns and local resources
- Furnished short-term rentals — Many interns use Furnished Finder or sublease from college students
At high-cost centers like JPL and Ames, the stipend may barely cover rent. Many interns share apartments (2-3 roommates) to make it work. Start searching for housing as soon as you accept the internship offer — don't wait until a month before.
