Checkr Pivots Toward Continuous Identity Defense and Income Verification at $5 Billion Valuation

By Zero G Talent•

Checkr is shifting its platform beyond traditional background checks to combat synthetic identities and deepfakes across the employment lifecycle. In October 2026, the company rolled out its Fraud Detection Suite, designed to evaluate continuous identity signals from initial application through post-hire reverification, as reported by PR Newswire.

The launch follows internal beta testing showing that 36% of inbound resumes triggered fraud flags for further manual review, with technical positions seeing flags on 50% of software and AI engineering submissions. A parallel survey of 3,000 U.S. hiring managers published by Mecklenburg Times revealed that 68% believe candidates use artificial intelligence to fake credentials faster than corporate screening systems can catch them, while 40% reported interviewing applicants later identified as using false identities.

The product rollout marks an operational repositioning for the 12-year-old company. Rather than serving as an API layer that runs single-point background checks when an employer issues an offer, Checkr is building tools that assess biometric data, device spoofing, location masking, and resume text against an internal graph database containing more than 260 million verified profiles.

Verification Infrastructure and Financial Expansion

Founded in 2014 out of Y Combinator’s S14 batch, Checkr established its core market by automating criminal record searches, driving history reports, drug testing, and education checks for high-volume gig-economy platforms. Early customers included Lyft, Instacart, DoorDash, Airtable, and Coinbase. The business has since grown to serve more than 140,000 customers globally, operating out of headquarters in San Francisco with hubs in Denver and Santiago, Chile.

The company has raised $680 million across eight institutional funding rounds, backed by GV, IVP, Accel, Khosla Ventures, Bond Capital, and T. Rowe Price. Checkr closed a $120 million late-stage round in April 2022 that set its valuation at $5 billion. In 2025, gross revenue exceeded $800 million and net revenue surpassed $500 million, according to Fortune.

Checkr has also moved into income, employment, and mortgage verification. After acquiring GoodHire for $400 million in 2022, the company acquired payroll verification startups Truework and Truv and integrated directly with Workday. In an interview with HousingWire, Felicia Lee, Checkr’s head of mortgage solutions and customer success, noted that the combined systems now verify 97% of domestic employment data, with completion rates reaching 75% across nontraditional and gig earnings. In March 2026, Checkr brought on former ZipRecruiter CFO Tim Yarbrough to run finance operations and target an addressable verification market valued above $40 billion.

Engineering Origins and Internal Tooling

Checkr was co-founded by CEO Daniel Yanisse and Jonathan Perichon. Both founders are engineers who worked together at mobile messaging startup Mogreet and on-demand delivery service Deliv prior to launching Checkr.

Yanisse completed a bachelor's and master's degree in microtechnique and microengineering at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), having previously worked on Mars rover prototypes during an internship at the NASA Ames Research Center. Perichon holds an undergraduate degree in computing from Blaise Pascal University and earned a master’s degree in computer science from UTBM, with exchange coursework at Laval University.

Inside the company, the engineering leadership expects high levels of tool building across every team. As reported by Business Insider, Yanisse instituted monthly stipends and mandatory project hackathons where non-technical employees in legal, HR, and finance build functional internal applications using AI coding interfaces like Cursor and Lovable. During corporate onboarding, every new employee—including C-suite executives—is tasked with shipping a software project to automate an aspect of their workflow.

Hiring Priorities Across Trust and Incubation

Checkr lists 800 employees and currently has five open roles on its engineering and corporate strategy teams. The hiring profile reflects the dual challenge of defending platform data against sophisticated bad actors while identifying adjacent commercial products.

On the security and platform architecture side, the company is recruiting a Senior Software Engineer, Trust ($185,000 to $218,000) to build detection pipelines that ingest identity anomalies. Checkr is also hiring multiple senior engineers to scale high-throughput infrastructure, including a hybrid Staff Software Engineer ($224,000 to $264,000) open across Denver, San Francisco, or remote settings.

For future product lines, Checkr maintains an internal experimental team, currently hiring an onsite Senior Software Engineer, Incubator ($185,000 to $218,000) based in San Francisco. Corporate and operational scaling are tied together by openings like the Product Finance & Strategy Manager ($161,000 to $189,000), which evaluates unit economics for new verification features.

The open technical roles require systems engineering experience, familiarity with large distributed datasets, and comfort working in environments that deploy automated code generation daily.
