Careers at Thera: Teams, Pay and How to Get Hired

By Priya Nair•

Who Gets Hired

Thera is a fifteen-person team building an AI-native finance OS that bundles global payroll, treasury, spend management, and invoicing into a single subscription for startups and SMEs that don't want a PEO. Y Combinator backed the Summer 2022 cohort. Since founding in 2021, Thera has raised $4.1 million, including a $4 million seed round in August 2024 led by Y Combinator, Amino Capital, Zillionize, and 10x Founder. Headcount grew 22 percent year over year per Simplify data. Founder and CEO Akhil Reddy describes the vision as "long-term vision, near-term conviction." The team is based in New York City, though several engineering roles now list remote eligibility.

Engineering dominates open roles. The Zero G Talent board shows six technical postings: CTO (NYC and remote US, $120k–$270k (Zero G Talent's board reported)), Senior Software Engineer (NYC and remote US, $120k–$250k (Zero G Talent found)), Staff Engineer (NYC, $100k–$250k), and Founding Engineer (NYC, $100k–$250k with 0.01–0.50% equity). The first-party salary band across all nine salaried roles runs $94k–$270k (according to Zero G Talent's board) with a $250k median (Zero G Talent's data shows). These are full-stack product engineers who ship payroll rails, banking integrations, and compliance logic across 150-plus countries.

Go-to-market is the other hiring vector. A Marketing Lead role (NYC, $80k–$150k base, 0.01–0.50% equity, five-plus years) appears across Ashby, Startup.jobs, and Y Combinator's job board with identical language: a hands-on individual contributor who "owns top of funnel and generates demand," tests ads, runs events, launches products, and works directly with the CEO and growth leadership. The posting explicitly calls for someone who will "run a campaign one day and wear a mascot costume the next to go viral." A GTM Lead and Partnerships Lead sit at the same compensation tier ($100k–$150k base, same equity band, five-plus years), signaling that distribution partnerships and channel strategy are active priorities. A Content Creator–Copy Writer role ($70k–$90k, hybrid or remote US) rounds out the marketing function.

Thera's internal permission model (documented in its help center as of March 2026) reveals how the team thinks about access. Six roles exist: Org Admin (platform-wide visibility and people/contract management), HR Specialist (broad HR workflow access), Team Admin (team-level settings and sensitive data access), People Manager + Payer, People Manager, and Viewer (Sensitive). This granularity matters for candidates: the product serves HR and finance teams at companies like Oceans, 20four7VA, Landed, Zendrop, Oneleet, Codingal, and Meru. Understanding the user's permission mental model is table stakes for product and engineering hires alike.

What unifies the profile? The marketing posting's "speed, creativity, and accountability" triplet applies across functions. At fifteen people, there is no platform team to hand off to, no dedicated DevOps, no marketing operations. The founding engineer writes the payroll engine and the CI pipeline. The marketing lead buys the ads and stitches the mascot costume. Thera hires people who have already operated at the edge of their competence and want to stay there.

The Pay Scale

Thera's compensation sits well above the therapy-industry medians that dominate public salary surveys. The live job board shows nine salaried roles clustered in a $94,000–$270,000 band with a $250,000 median — a software engineering and leadership pay scale, not a clinical one.

Role Location Salary Band (USD/year)
CTO Remote (US) 120,000 – 270,000
CTO New York, NY 120,000 – 270,000
Senior Software Engineer New York, NY 120,000 – 250,000
Senior Software Engineer Remote (US) 120,000 – 250,000
Staff Engineer New York, NY 100,000 – 250,000
Founding Engineer New York, NY 100,000 – 250,000

The highest posted ranges belong to the two CTO listings, both spanning $120,000–$270,000 (Zero G Talent's figures put). One is remote-eligible across the U.S.; the other is anchored in New York. Senior Software Engineer roles in New York and remote carry identical $120,000–$250,000 bands. Staff Engineer and Founding Engineer positions, both New York-based, open at $100,000 (according to Zero G Talent's board) and top out at $250,000. Across the six engineering and leadership postings, the floor never drops below $100,000 and the ceiling holds at $250,000–$270,000.

These bands are wider than typical corporate ladders — a $150,000 spread on the CTO role suggests the company prices for outcome and scope rather than a rigid leveling matrix. Remote parity on Senior Software Engineer and CTO postings signals that geography does not discount the offer; a candidate in Denver or Atlanta sees the same range as one in Manhattan.

Contrast this with therapy-sector benchmarks that often surface in searches for "Thera." The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2024 OEWS data puts mental health counselors at a $59,190 median, marriage and family therapists at $63,780, and clinical psychologists at $94,310. Even the 90th-percentile counselor wage of $98,210 falls below Thera's engineering floor. A separate Salary.com estimate for "Thera Wellness" (a different entity) cites an $82,902–$107,026 range averaging $94,373. That figure aligns with the board's $94,000 low end but describes a clinical employer, not the technology company posting CTO and founding-engineer roles.

Candidates should treat posted ranges as negotiation anchors. Know the band, quantify your value, and ask for the top of it.

How the Loop Runs

Thera runs a lean, engineering-first hiring loop built around the roles it actually funds: CTO, Staff Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, and Founding Engineer. The first-party board data shows nine salaried postings in the past cycle, all clustered in the $100k–$270k band, split between New York and remote-US. That shape tells you the process is designed for senior individual contributors who can ship product in a regulated fintech environment (payroll, contractor payments, and cross-border employment compliance), not for junior generalists.

The company looks for engineers who have operated at the intersection of financial infrastructure and distributed systems. The job titles, Staff Engineer and Founding Engineer, signal an expectation of ownership: you will design the ledger, own the compliance surface, and negotiate trade-offs between speed and auditability. Remote-US roles require proven async communication; New York roles expect in-office collaboration with the founding team. The board's salary median of $250k reflects that bar.

What candidates need to succeed:

  • Domain fluency. You don't need to have built a payroll engine, but you must articulate how you'd handle floating-point precision in money movement, or why you'd choose event sourcing over CRUD for an audit log.
  • Regulatory intuition. Thera sells compliance as a feature. Candidates who can map a feature request to a specific licensing requirement (e.g., "this flow triggers MTL in California") move faster.
  • Remote-first discipline. The remote-US roles are not "remote-optional." The loop tests written communication.
  • Founder alignment. The values interview probes whether you'll push back on a deadline that risks a regulatory breach. The YC backing means speed matters, but the product category means the cost of a bug is a frozen payroll run.

Leverage points: Ask to shadow the on-call rotation or sit in on a compliance review. The startup.jobs listing notes six open positions as of September 2026; the team is small enough that a candidate who demonstrates they've read the public materials and can critique the technical approach stands out. Treat the recruiting coordinator as a future teammate — they route your packet to the CTO.

Where the Team Works

Thera operates from a compact physical footprint that belies its distributed reach. The company is headquartered at 90 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park, a single office location that serves as its registered base, according to corporate registry data. That address places the company in the heart of the Peninsula venture corridor, within walking distance of Sand Hill Road and the Stanford campus — a deliberate signal for a payroll and payments platform targeting venture-backed startups and global teams.

The first-party board data tells a more operational story. Of the six active roles listed on Zero G Talent's board, three are anchored in New York City, with CTO, Senior Software Engineer, and Staff Engineer all carrying a "New York, NY, US" location tag, while the remaining three (CTO, Senior Software Engineer, Founding Engineer) are tagged "Remote (US)." No roles list Menlo Park as the work location. That split suggests the New York presence functions as a de facto second hub, at least for engineering and leadership, while the Menlo Park address remains the legal and perhaps executive center.

Thera's own product messaging reinforces the remote-first architecture. The company publishes a Remote Work Playbook (a documented framework for distributed teams), and its platform is explicitly built to "run US payroll, pay contractors worldwide, and hire international employees all in one place." The playbook isn't marketing collateral; it's a product-adjacent artifact that signals how the company dogfoods its own infrastructure. Candidates should read it before interviewing.

The New York roles carry the same salary bands as their remote counterparts ($120,000 to $270,000 for CTO and Senior Software Engineer positions, $100,000 to $250,000 for Staff and Founding Engineer roles), indicating location-agnostic compensation within the US. That parity is notable in a market where New York premiums of 15–20% over national medians are still common. It also means the "New York" label on a posting doesn't imply a mandatory office commute; it may simply denote a hiring entity or tax nexus.

Physical workspace details are thin in the public record. The Menlo Park address appears in corporate filings but not in facility tours, lease announcements, or employee photo streams. The New York location lacks a published street address in the job data — only the metro designation. For a company selling global employment infrastructure, that opacity is either oversight or strategy: the product is the workspace. The board listings' "Remote (US)" tags cover the United States, with no time-zone restrictions disclosed. Candidates in Mountain or Pacific time should clarify expected overlap hours during screening.

If you're evaluating fit, treat the Menlo Park HQ as a legal anchor, the New York cluster as a talent density play, and the remote designation as the actual operating model. Ask hiring managers which team rituals are synchronous, how onboarding handles equipment provisioning across states, and whether the company maintains a physical offsite cadence. The answers will tell you more about day-to-day work than any address on a careers page.

Who Thrives Here

The public record on Thera's internal culture is sparse — no Glassdoor corpus for this entity, no employee blog series, no conference talks from staff. What exists are the roles the company has chosen to fund and the locations it has approved. From the Zero G Talent board, nine salaried postings have appeared recently, all in engineering: CTO (two listings, one remote and one New York), Senior Software Engineer (remote and New York), Staff Engineer (New York), and Founding Engineer (New York). The salary band spans $94,000 to $270,000 with a median of $250,000. That distribution (heavy on senior and staff titles, light on junior or mid-level) suggests a team that expects new hires to operate with minimal scaffolding.

The split between remote-U.S. and New York postings for identical titles (CTO, Senior Software Engineer) indicates the organization has built, or is building, a hybrid model where geography is not a proxy for seniority. Candidates who thrive in that environment tend to be self-directed communicators who can maintain velocity without daily physical co-location. The presence of a Founding Engineer role in New York alongside a Staff Engineer role in the same city hints at a product surface area that still rewards architectural ownership — someone who can take a vague problem space and ship a coherent system.

Compensation at the $250,000 median for engineering roles attracts candidates who have competing offers from public companies and well-capitalized startups. The people who accept (and stay) are typically optimizing for technical scope and equity upside over brand prestige or perimeter benefits. They are comfortable with ambiguity in product direction because the role definitions (Founding Engineer, Staff Engineer) imply the roadmap is still being written.

No public data describes Thera's interview rubric, performance review cycle, or promotion ladder. The board shows no postings for product managers, designers, data scientists, or go-to-market roles — either those functions don't exist yet, they're filled, or they're hired through channels not captured here. A candidate evaluating fit should treat that absence as signal: the engineering team likely carries product and design responsibilities that would be specialized elsewhere.

The only verifiable traits are the ones the job titles demand: deep systems fluency, comfort owning outcomes end-to-end, and the ability to recruit peers into a technical vision. Everything else (culture rituals, management style, work-hour norms) remains private. Ask about it in the loop. The fifteen people building this system don't have a playbook. They're writing it. The next hire writes the next page.
