Careers at Respan: Teams, Pay and How to Get Hired

By Elena Petrova•

Who gets hired

Respan processes over one billion logs and two trillion tokens monthly for 6.5 million end users across 100-plus AI startups and enterprise teams, TheJobsMap's data shows — all with a headcount you can count on two hands. That density defines the bar. The Y Combinator W24 company lists nine open roles on its YC jobs page and states plainly on its careers page that it hires "for exceptional people first" — roles are a starting point, not a ceiling.

Engineering roles cluster around the stack's three surfaces. A Senior Software Engineer, Frontend (six-plus years) owns the interfaces developers touch daily. A Software Engineer, Full-Stack (three-plus years) and a Product Engineer (three-plus years) work across the API layer and the runtime that executes agent workloads. A Software Engineer, AI (three-plus years) focuses on the model-serving and evaluation plumbing that distinguishes the product from a generic wrapper. The fall co-op Frontend Intern slot signals the team wants pipeline talent it can mold before graduation.

Two roles sit outside pure engineering but require technical fluency. The Founding Technical GTM (one-plus years, $100K–$150K, Y Combinator's jobs page reports this band) bridges sales and product — someone who can demo the platform to a founding engineer and translate feedback into roadmap items. The Designer, Product & Web (one-plus years, $100K, TheJobsMap's figures put this at $100K) owns the end-to-end experience from marketing site to dashboard, a scope that in a ten-person company means designing, building, and shipping front-end code themselves.

The Chief of Staff role (three-plus years, $1–$250K, Y Combinator's jobs page lists this range) is the outlier: a wide-band operator who runs recruiting, fundraising support, customer operations, and whatever the founders need cleared from their plates. The Marketing role (one-plus years, $1–$120K, Y Combinator's jobs page shows this range, remote US) handles developer content, community, and launch narratives — again, a single person owning a function that at a Series B company would employ a team.

Remote eligibility appears on most listings as "Remote (IN)" — India, alongside the Alameda headquarters. The careers page notes most of the team lives together in hacker houses and works seven days a week. That intensity is explicit: "We're only looking for people who are genuinely excited about the grind." In a founder interview, Andy Li said they want people who "take pride in that ownership and who take pride in the fact that they will be able to manage different priorities."

Qualifications across roles share a pattern: three-plus years for individual contributors, six-plus for senior, one-plus for design and GTM. The company's own description — "teams that ship AI in production need a whole new class of tooling" doubles as a candidate signal.

Pay and equity

Respan's compensation data comes from three sources that don't fully align: the company's own Y Combinator job postings, third-party aggregator alion.io, and Zero G Talent's first-party board listings. The board data is the most current and specific — it reflects actual open roles as of this month, so it carries the most weight here.

Y Combinator's jobs page reports Founding Technical GTM at $100k–$150k; TheJobsMap's figures put Designer, Product & Web at a flat $100k; and board data shows a Software Engineering Intern (fall co-op) at $3k–$6k monthly ($36k–$72k annualized). Chief of Staff, Software Engineer Full-Stack, and Software Engineer AI list no salary on the board. Alion.io, which tracks a wider set of postings, puts the company median at $100k with a typical range of $72k–$150k and flags Founding Technical GTM as the highest-paying role at $150k. It also estimates bands for roles not currently on the board: Product Engineer $106k–$198k, Senior Software Engineer Frontend $123k–$230k, Software Engineer Full-Stack $107k–$200k, and Software Engineer AI $108k–$202k. Those estimates are modeled, not posted, and should be read as directional.

Role Posted band (board) Alion.io estimate Notes
Founding Technical GTM $100k–$150k / yr $150k top Alameda, CA / Remote SF
Designer, Product & Web $100k / yr $100k / yr Alameda, CA / Remote IN
Software Engineering Intern (fall co-op) $3k–$6k / mo $36k–$72k / yr Alameda, CA only
Chief of Staff Not posted — Alameda, CA
Software Engineer, Full-Stack Not posted $107k–$200k / yr Alameda, CA / Remote IN
Software Engineer, AI Not posted $108k–$202k / yr Alameda, CA / Remote IN
Senior Software Engineer, Frontend Not posted $123k–$230k / yr Not on board currently
Product Engineer Not posted $106k–$198k / yr Not on board currently

The Y Combinator jobs page (W24 batch, team size 23) lists wider placeholder ranges, "$1–$200K" for most engineering roles, which are too broad to be useful for negotiation. The board's narrower bands are the actionable ones.

Equity mechanics are not public. Respan raised a $5M venture round in March 2026, its first priced round on record. At 51–200 employees (alion.io estimate; YC says 23), the option pool is likely still being calibrated. Without a published equity page or offer-letter data, candidates should ask directly: total shares authorized, current strike price, post-money valuation at the March close, and whether refresh grants are standard.

Benefits are undocumented in the sources. The YC posting for Chief of Staff lists a $1–$250K range without further detail. None of the standard startup benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, hardware stipend, home-office budget, on-site travel) are confirmed for Respan specifically.

The upshot: cash compensation clusters around $100k median with a $150k ceiling for the most senior commercial role. Engineering bands are wide in the estimates but unposted for the roles actually open. Equity terms are a blank slate; bring your own data and ask for the cap table snapshot.

The hiring process

Respan does not run a standard corporate funnel. The company is a small team, all technical, living and working out of hacker houses in Alameda. The careers page describes seven-day weeks, weekly shipping, direct customer contact, and a default to building over talking.

Entry point: the YC board and a direct line

All open roles live on Respan's Y Combinator company page. The board shows six active listings as of this writing: Founding Technical GTM ($100k–150k), Designer, Product & Web ($100k), Software Engineering Intern, Frontend (fall co-op, $3k–6k/month), those roles. Salary bands across the board, Zero G Talent's board data shows, sit between $49k and $140k with a $100k median. There is no ATS portal. Candidates apply through the YC listing or, if no posted role fits, email [email protected] with the explicit note: "we hire for exceptional people first."

Screening

Respan has published a blog post describing an AI sourcing and screening agent they built, covering parsing, enrichment, matching, ranking, and audit trail. The research does not confirm whether this agent is used on their own hiring pipeline.

What the company signals it values

From the careers page and founder interviews, the operating style selects for:

  • Speed with craft: Respan ships weekly.
  • Customer obsession: The team talks to customers constantly.
  • Ownership without ego: The hacker house culture means no silos.
  • Grind alignment: "We work 7 days a week... and seek those who embrace the grind."

This operating rhythm let a ten-person team grow revenue 8x year-over-year in 2025 while processing production traffic for 100+ AI startups and enterprise teams, TheJobsMap reported.

Remote options exist for some roles (San Francisco, India), but the default and the culture center is Alameda.

Alameda and remote

Respan's job postings on Zero G Talent list Alameda, California as the primary worksite for every open role: Founding Technical GTM, those roles, Designer, and a Frontend co-op. Each posting also carries a remote option, most tagged "Remote (San Francisco, CA, US)" or simply "Remote (IN)." LinkedIn shows the company headquarters as San Francisco, but the live hiring data points to Alameda, a short bridge or ferry ride across the bay, as the physical anchor. Candidates planning around a San Francisco address should expect the team's day-to-day base on the Alameda side.

Remote eligibility is broad. Every salaried role except the Frontend co-op explicitly allows remote work, and the co-op itself is listed as Alameda-only. The "Remote (IN)" tag on several postings suggests the company is set up to employ internationally, not just domestically distributed. For a team of roughly 11–50 people (LinkedIn), that flexibility expands the talent pool well beyond the Bay Area without forcing a fully remote culture.

The Erin, Ontario address that appears in some directories belongs to Respan Products Inc., a medical plastics extruder and injection molder founded in 1981 with 18 employees and ISO 13485 certification. It shares the name but not the business: no AI gateway, no agent observability, no Span models. Candidates should filter it out.

Product velocity is visible in the launch cadence: Respan shipped its router, full-text search over LLM generations, Span-01 (a hyper-parallel reasoning classifier), Span-1 (an evaluation frontier model), and Prompt Simulations within weeks in September–October 2026. The Alameda base acts as a high-bandwidth hub; remote teammates plug into the same infrastructure via the same OpenAI-compatible endpoint every customer uses.

For a hire today: plan on Alameda if you want the daily whiteboard and the lunch-table density where a routing fix becomes a classifier improvement before the afternoon stand-up. Plan on remote if you need geographic flexibility; the tooling, the endpoint, and the on-call rotation are built for it. Either way, the work happens where the traces land.

Who thrives

The job titles themselves are the clearest signal. "Founding Technical GTM" implies the first person to own a motion, not the tenth. "Chief of Staff" at a sub-20-person company means operating as a force multiplier for the founders, context-switching between fundraising, hiring, product strategy, and whatever fire needs putting out that day. The two engineering slots, Full-Stack and AI, sit side by side, which suggests the product requires both traditional application scaffolding and model-layer work. The Designer role combines product and web, meaning the same person owns the dashboard UX and the public-facing site. The internship is frontend-specific and timed to a fall co-op cycle, indicating a deliberate pipeline investment rather than ad-hoc help. Across the board, the common denominator is breadth: Respan hires people who can own a vertical slice end-to-end, not specialists who wait for a ticket.

Glassdoor shows exactly one anonymous review for Respan; Indeed lists reviews under "Respan Products," a name that refers to the separate plastics manufacturer in Erin, Ontario. Neither source offers enough signal to extract cultural patterns for the AI company.

The company's own careers page frames the pitch plainly: "Join the team building the LLM engineering platform. We're hiring engineers, researchers, and builders." No perks list, no values manifesto, no mention of work-life balance or inclusion statements. That silence is itself data; the pitch leads with the technical problem, not the culture deck.

The location footprint reinforces the profile. Alameda sits across the bay from San Francisco, cheaper than the city but still in the orbit of the AI talent density. Remote eligibility for the GTM, Designer, and both engineering roles means the team is distributed by design, not exception. That setup rewards asynchronous communication, written decision logs, and self-directed prioritization.

Respan's origin story is documented in a founder interview with Andy Li (UIUC mechanical engineering and economics, former Apple product design engineer on AirPods 4) co-founded the company after building Simility (acquired by PayPal). The team entered YC W24 as Keywords AI, pivoted from dynamic LLM routing to observability and evaluations after customer conversations revealed the deeper pain point, rebranded to Respan, and raised a $5M seed round led by Gradient in March 2026.

A customer example: Retell AI, which runs millions of LLM calls across thousands of concurrent conversations. Their CTO said Respan "gave us the debugging layer to resolve production issues 10x faster" at scale.

The people who thrive in this environment treat ambiguity as a design parameter. They ship without a spec, debug production models they didn't train, write the onboarding doc because no one else will, and do it knowing the company might pivot next quarter. If that sounds like a cost, you're not the target. If it sounds like the job, you're already qualified.
