Job Description

Build the future of AI agents

stagewise is building the open-source infrastructure layer for sovereign AI agents. We enable organizations to create, orchestrate, and operate AI agents across their entire business while maintaining full control over their models, data, and workflows.

Backed by Y Combinator, we're building the foundation for a future where AI agents become a core part of how companies build software, automate operations, and get work done.

What You'll Do

You'll work on the stagewise IDE, our open-source platform for managing coding agents in the age of agentic software development. Your mission is simple: build the go-to agentic IDE developers will reach for when working with AI.

You'll:

  • Ship features end-to-end across our React, TypeScript, and Node.js stack
  • Own GitHub issues from backlog to production
  • Review, improve, and approve agent-generated pull requests
  • Build stagewise with stagewise
  • Continuously benchmark competing products and identify where we should win
  • Improve performance, reliability, and developer experience
  • Create reusable UX patterns that scale across the product

If you enjoy eliminating unnecessary re-renders, squeezing out performance gains, refining interactions, and turning rough ideas into polished products, you'll probably enjoy this role.

Who We're Looking For

  • Strong TypeScript & React experience
  • Solid Node.js experience
  • Daily user of agentic coding tools
  • Comfortable taking ownership and driving projects independently
  • Understands what makes products feel great
  • Excellent English skills
  • Basic German skills

React and TypeScript expertise are not optional. You should be comfortable building and maintaining production-grade applications.

If your GitHub profile doesn't represent some of your proudest work, this role is probably not for you.

Bonus points if you:

  • Contribute to open source
  • Have built developer tools before
  • Have strong opinions about AI-assisted software development
  • Compare products and tools for fun

Why stagewise?

We believe the best people do their best work when they're trusted with real responsibility. You'll work directly with the founders, help shape our product roadmap, and have the freedom to pursue ideas you believe will move the company forward.

We're looking for people who are excited about what we're building and want to contribute to something very ambitious. If you want to help revolutionize the world with AI, you'll fit right in.

Also, the stagewise IDE is open source, and all of your contributions will be visible to the community.

What We Offer

  • 20 hours/week during the semester
  • 40 hours/week during semester breaks
  • High ownership and autonomy from day one
  • Direct collaboration with the founders
  • Opportunity for long-term employment
  • Office directly at Bielefeld Hauptbahnhof
  • MacBook, high-quality monitor, air-conditioned office
  • Unlimited coffee and flexible working hours

Interview Process

Tell us your story, a product you genuinely enjoy using (and why), why you're the perfect fit, and what makes you unique. We want our team to consist of extraordinary people, and your application should reflect that.

Afterward, we'll kick things off with a short 15-minute video call, followed by a 30-minute meeting at our office. After a trial day where you can meet the team and learn more about the product, we'll get started if both sides feel it's a great fit.

About stagewise

stagewise builds an open-source frontend coding agent for real codebases. We enable backend devs, designers and product managers to build pretty and functional web apps in a simple and visually guided manner - no matter the used tech stack. stagewise lives right inside your browser, makes changes in your local codebase and is compatible with all kinds of frameworks and setups - allowing it to be retrofitted into any existing project. Our agent enables you to show and tell what you want to change - all while using your app on localhost and without having to switch to external tools. Making changes is as easy as selecting elements, giving a simple prompt like “make it green and put it in the top right corner”, and immediately seeing the result. We're two founders from Germany who met while working at a B2B SaaS startup. With Glenn's background in building dev tools for enterpries (Rheinmetall, Miele), as well as Julians experience in building web apps used by thousands (saasmetrix, strukto.io), we have the unique blend of experience and product sense needed to build this. After making our initial launch with the open-sourced toolbar that puts your favorite coding agent right inside your browser and going viral with it, we’re now launching a high-speed coding agent dedicated to frontend development - taking our product and the experience of our users to the next level. Our vision is to replace frontend devs completely, by gradually enabling both the backend devs, but also less technical designers and product managers to create well-designed applications. We start with developers who lack design experience, but our ultimate goal is to change how products are built.
