Job Description

Remote · Flexible Part-Time Contract

About Sonia Care

Sonia Care is an online therapy service delivered by licensed clinicians through an affiliated California professional entity and supported by Sonia Health’s technology.

Sonia AI is a separate mental health companion designed to support reflection, skills practice, and journaling between appointments. It is built in collaboration with researchers, psychologists, and licensed mental health professionals and draws on evidence-based behavioral principles.

In a randomized controlled trial with approximately 400 participants, people using Sonia’s AI reported improvements in mood and reductions in stress.

Sonia Care combines licensed human therapy with optional between-appointment support from Sonia AI. Members initially receive a 60-minute intake and two 45-minute therapy sessions per month, generally every other week, along with access to the Sonia app. The clinician retains independent clinical judgment and is responsible for the therapy they provide. Sonia AI does not diagnose, determine level of care, replace the clinician, or operate as a crisis service.

We are looking for thoughtful California clinicians who provide excellent teletherapy and want to help establish a responsible model of AI-supported care.

What you will do

  • Conduct remote intake assessments and follow-up therapy sessions with adults (18+) physically located in California.
  • Determine whether Sonia Care remains clinically appropriate throughout the care relationship.
  • Establish and update treatment goals using your independent professional judgment.
  • Review concise Sonia interval summaries before appointments when available and correct material inaccuracies.
  • Complete timely, clinically appropriate documentation after each visit.
  • Assess and respond to safety concerns, including escalation, referral, transfer, or discharge when a different level of care is needed.
  • Follow applicable California licensure, telehealth, consent, privacy, mandated-reporting, and professional standards.
  • Participate in paid platform and workflow onboarding before receiving clients.
  • Optionally share feedback about clinical workflow and product usability, separately from direct clinical care.

Clinicians are not expected to monitor Sonia continuously, routinely review full Sonia transcripts, or provide after-hours crisis coverage.

What we provide

  • Client referrals: Focus on care rather than client acquisition.
  • Flexible participation: Start with an agreed caseload and availability.
  • Administrative support: Sonia coordinates the technology, member experience, and core operational workflows.
  • Purpose-built technology: Tools designed to support HIPAA-compliant clinical workflows.
  • Clinical autonomy: The licensed clinician’s judgment governs the care they provide.
  • Paid onboarding: Required platform and workflow training is compensated.
  • An early role: Help shape a thoughtful human-plus-AI care model from an early stage.

Required qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted California license as an LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, or Licensed Psychologist.
  • Authorization to practice independently without clinical supervision.
  • Doctoral-level clinicians: At least one year of independent clinical practice; three or more years strongly preferred.
  • Master’s-level clinicians: At least three years of independent clinical practice.
  • Experience providing individual psychotherapy to adults, including through telehealth.
  • Strong assessment, risk-management, and documentation skills.
  • Professional liability insurance meeting the affiliated practice’s requirements.
  • A private, professional setting for remote sessions.
  • Reliable internet and comfort learning secure digital tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Willingness to complete credentialing, license verification, background screening, and required onboarding.

We are not currently considering associates, interns, trainees, or clinicians who require supervision to practice independently.

Preferred experience

  • Supporting adults with mild-to-moderate anxiety, depressive symptoms, stress, avoidance, low mood, or related functional challenges.
  • CBT, ACT, DBT, behavioral activation, motivational interviewing, or other structured, evidence-informed approaches.
  • Digital mental health or telehealth platforms.
  • Clinical supervision, quality improvement, or early-stage clinical program development.
  • Thoughtful curiosity about AI in mental health care, alongside healthy skepticism and strong professional boundaries.
  • Experience serving diverse and historically underserved communities.
  • Additional languages, especially Spanish.

Initial care model

  • Adults physically located in California at each appointment.
  • A 60-minute initial assessment followed by regular 45-minute sessions.
  • Two therapy sessions per month, generally every other week.
  • Sonia AI available between appointments for reflection and skills practice.
  • Routine outpatient teletherapy only; members needing crisis, psychiatry, specialty, or more intensive care are referred to an appropriate service.
  • Initial launch is self-pay.

Compensation and engagement

This is a flexible, part-time contractor opportunity through the affiliated California professional entity responsible for clinical services. Competitive compensation will be shared before engagement and stated in the written agreement. Required onboarding is paid.

The agreement will also specify documentation expectations, cancellation and no-show terms, insurance requirements, payment timing, and any separately requested non-clinical work. No equity is included.

Application

Please apply through Bookface. We welcome qualified clinicians from all backgrounds and strongly encourage applications from clinicians whose lived experience reflects the communities Sonia Care hopes to serve.
