Video Producer

Compensation
$140,000–$200,000/year

Job Description

PlanetScale is growing rapidly and reinventing the database space. Our database platform offers developers the fastest and most reliable Postgres and Vitess/MySQL databases, enabling businesses to efficiently handle data and workloads of all sizes.

PlanetScale is backed with over $100M in venture financing from top-tier VCs including a16z, Kleiner Perkins, SignalFire, and Insight Venture Partners. And we serve some of the most innovative companies in the world such as Block, Anysphere (Cursor), MyFitnessPal, Etsy, Kick, and thousands more. Our customers entrust us with what is often their most precious digital asset, their data, so the stakes couldn't be higher.

We're looking for a Video Producer to own the hands-on video production at PlanetScale. Video is one of the most effective ways we connect with developers, customers, and the broader technical community, and we want someone who can bring a strong creative point of view and the hands-on ability to bring ideas all the way from concept to final cut.

What's the job to be done?

  • Own PlanetScale's video program across customer stories, product launches, in-person events, executive content, YouTube, shorts, and other formats that help developers understand what we're building and why it matters.
  • Set the creative bar for video, bringing strong instincts around story, pacing, visuals, sound, and detail so every piece feels sharp, intentional, and unmistakably PlanetScale.
  • Find the narrative in technical subject matter. Whether it's a customer's migration story, a database launch, or a conference keynote, you'll shape the raw material into something people actually want to watch.
  • Film on location at customer offices, conferences, events, and our San Francisco office. You'll be comfortable owning camera, lighting, audio, direction, and the practical details needed to get the shot.
  • Edit long-form YouTube videos, launch assets, event recaps, social clips, and shorts with a strong sense of rhythm, structure, and audience.
  • Own post-production from assembly through delivery, including pacing, sound design, color, motion graphics, animation, and final polish.
  • Build and manage a lean production pipeline, including gear, scheduling, shot planning, footage organization, stakeholder reviews, and delivery.
  • Operate as a highly hands-on individual contributor. This is a role for someone who can set the creative direction and then make the thing themselves.
  • Move quickly while protecting quality. Some weeks you'll be on a shoot; others you'll be turning around edits on a tight launch or content schedule.

These attributes best describe you

  • You are a strong and experienced video editor. You understand pacing, structure, sound, and the difference between a video that is assembled and a video that is told.
  • You are a storyteller first. You can take technical material and find the human, product, or business story inside it.
  • You have strong taste and creative judgment. You can point to work you're proud of and explain why the creative choices made it effective.
  • You are equally comfortable behind the camera and in the editor. You don't need a large crew to make something look and sound great.
  • You are highly self-directed and operational. You can take a loose idea, turn it into a plan, get the footage, manage the edit, and ship the final asset.
  • You take input well from leadership and cross-functional partners while still bringing your own creative ideas to the work.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity, speed, and high ownership. PlanetScale moves fast, and you'll be expected to bias toward action without letting quality slip.

What you will need

  • A strong portfolio showing range across polished narrative work, quick-turn edits, social cuts, and/or short-form video. Your portfolio matters more than your resume.
  • Demonstrated experience filming, directing, and editing projects end to end as an individual contributor.
  • Strong editing skills in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, or equivalent.
  • Experience shooting on location, including interviews, with the ability to handle your own lighting and audio.
  • Motion graphics and animation ability, with good judgment for when those tools make the story clearer or the video stronger.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning shoots, managing footage, organizing feedback, and delivering on deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for shoots at events and customer sites.
  • This role requires you to be based in the San Francisco Bay Area. You may work remotely at times, but you will be expected to work from our San Francisco office when needed for filming, production, and other in-person work.

What else will help you be successful

  • Experience in developer tools, infrastructure, databases, or another engineering-focused space.
  • Experience producing content for YouTube, social, or a public creative channel where you developed a strong sense of audience and format.
  • Experience filming and interviewing executives, engineers, customers, or technical subject-matter experts.
  • 3D or advanced animation ability in Blender, After Effects, or similar.
  • Comfort using AI tools across the creative and production workflow, and curiosity about what they make newly possible.
