Job Description
VP of Finance
Why Patch, why now
Patch exists to rebalance the planet by making environmental commodities easier to understand, trust, and buy at scale. We route hundreds of millions of dollars through carbon, sustainable aviation fuel, renewable energy, and renewable natural gas. These are scaling markets with settlement and money moving across roughly ten currencies, which means the finance function here is part of the product, not a back office that reports on one.
We are an AI-native services firm. Our embedded climate strategists deliver outcomes for enterprise customers, our platform makes each strategist dramatically more productive and each new market cheaper to enter, and every engagement generates structured data that makes the next engagement faster.
We have raised $85M to date across offices in San Francisco, London & Singapore. The next chapter is a private credit and debt facility to finance inventory and working capital, an acquisition program across adjacent services and data businesses, and the equity raise that funds both. This is the seat that runs all three.
About the role
You will own finance and legal end to end and act as the closest operating partner to the CEO & Founder. The scope covers FP&A, treasury, and financial operations across multiple entities and currencies. It covers our legal and regulatory posture across the US, UK, and EU, including commercial contracting, corporate governance, and the outside counsel relationships that support both.
Three reasons this role is worth your next five years.
The problem is hard. You are working across multiple currencies and entities with a mix of software revenue, services revenue, and commodity transactions that settle physically. The technical finance work rivals the best desks in the market, and there is no playbook to copy.
AI changes what one finance team can do. You get to design the function from scratch, native to how AI actually works, and operate at the depth of a team three times the size. If you have wanted to build a modern finance org rather than inherit one, this is that.
We sit at the intersection of two capital cycles. The energy transition is one of the major secular shifts behind the AI capex buildout. Every hyperscaler datacenter is a new energy and environmental commodity buyer, and the market underneath them is still being wired together. Patch intends to operate that infrastructure.
What you'll do
Own financial operations. FP&A, treasury, cash and FX management, revenue recognition, close, audit, and controls across multiple entities and roughly ten currencies. Build the model that the board, our lenders, and I all actually use.
Own legal and regulatory. Commercial contracting, corporate governance and entity management, and our regulatory posture across the US, UK, and EU as environmental commodity markets get formalized. Manage outside counsel and decide what we bring in-house and when.
Lead M&A. Source, diligence, structure, and integrate acquisitions of adjacent services and data businesses as deal lead with me and the board. Own the integration plan, not just the signing.
Own the board relationship on finance. Build the board materials, run the audit and comp discussions, and be a credible independent voice to directors rather than a narrator of my slides.
What success looks like
First 90 days: Own the model and the close. Establish a monthly reporting rhythm that the leadership team and board trust. Get to a clear-eyed view of unit economics by market and by revenue type. Identify the three things in financial operations that will break first at our next stage.
6-12 months: Close the debt facility. Run the equity raise process end to end. Lead at least one acquisition from first conversation through integration. Be the person the board calls directly when they have a question about the business.
What we're looking for
Banking foundation. Three to seven years in investment banking, ideally with real M&A or leveraged finance reps. You can build a model from a blank sheet and defend every assumption in it.
Operating depth. Seven to ten years operating in venture-backed companies between Series A and Series C. You have lived through the transition from spreadsheet finance to systems finance, and you know which controls matter at which stage.
Capital markets range. You have raised both equity and debt. Private credit, asset-backed, or working capital facility experience is a significant advantage given what we are financing.
Comfort owning legal. You have carried the legal function alongside finance, managed outside counsel, and handled commercial contracting and governance without needing a GC next to you.
Mission orientation. You care about climate, or you are excited by commodities, trade finance, environmental markets, or the energy transition. This work is technical and specific, and the people who do it well find the subject matter interesting on its own terms.
AI-native workflow. You already use AI tools daily in analysis, diligence, and drafting. This is how the function will be built, so it cannot be aspirational for you.
