Build the applications that let AI see, decide, and act across the physical economy.

About Oway

Oway is an industrial automation and research company building IOI, the Internet of Industrials: a standardized protocol that lets industrial systems communicate their physical state and capabilities to software, AI agents, and one another.

The internet gave computers a common language. The physical economy still doesn't have one. Factories, fleets, warehouses, and soon robots run on closed systems that can't see or command each other, so most coordination still happens by phone, email, and spreadsheet.

Our thesis is that logistics is the foundational language of industry. Nearly every physical business can be described with the same primitives: what exists, where it is, where it needs to go, capacity, time, cost, constraints, storage, and transformation. IOI translates those states, wherever they live today (ERPs, TMSs, WMSs, sensors, vehicles, factory floors), into one permissioned, machine-readable context and command layer.

Every company on IOI runs its own node. Nodes are secure, customer-owned, and private by default, and they connect to other nodes, autonomous systems, and hardware only with the owner's permission. Each node gives a company a searchable, AI-ready picture of its physical operations and a way to act on it.

We prove the protocol by running real applications on it. Juno, our AI agent, reasons over the network to price, coordinate, and execute work autonomously, and Oway Rideshare, the first service built on IOI, moves freight on trucks already traveling the right direction. More than 10,000 vehicles run on IOI today, and Fortune 500 companies and national logistics networks are connecting their operations to it. Trucks are the beginning. The same foundation lets factories coordinate production, robots discover and execute tasks, and autonomous fleets respond to demand.

We want to help American industry build more, move faster, and compete globally. We're backed by YC, General Catalyst, and leading investors in AI, industrials, and automation.

About the Founder

Phillip, Oway's founder, co-founded Isotrex, a multinational defense manufacturer, with his brother at 16. He built its supply chain and production end to end, became CEO in 2019, and scaled it to roughly $100M in annual revenue and more than 4,000 vehicles built. Running factories showed him that the machines, systems, and companies of the physical economy have no common way to understand each other. He wrote "The Physical Economy Has No Index" and started Oway to build that common language.

About This Role

IOI is only as valuable as what runs on it. You'll build those applications end to end: Juno's reasoning and execution workflows, Oway Rideshare, IOI Search over a company's operations, and the consoles operators use to set up nodes, grant permissions, and supervise autonomous work. You'll own features from data model to interface, on top of live physical systems.

You'll work closely with Phillip, our engineering leads, and the teams who deploy IOI with customers.

Your First 90 Days

  • By day 30: ship a production feature in an IOI application, such as a new Juno capability or an IOI Search view over a customer's live operations.
  • By day 60: own an application surface end to end, from the IOI data it reads to the interface operators use.
  • By day 90: own a system that turns a new IOI primitive into an application customers rely on every day.

What You'll Do

  • Build applications on IOI. Ship Juno, Rideshare, IOI Search, and the services behind them on top of the protocol.
  • Put agents to work. Build agent workflows that reason over node data, call tools, and execute actions with the right guardrails and human oversight.
  • Design the operator experience. Build consoles for node setup, permissions, monitoring, and supervising autonomous work.
  • Connect industry data. Build APIs and integrations with enterprise systems and industry networks such as SMC3 and project44.
  • Own features end to end. Take ideas from design and architecture through implementation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Build for the real world. Handle late, partial, and conflicting data in software that moves real goods.

Skills You'll Need

  • Java and Spring Boot for production services.
  • TypeScript and React for data-heavy, real-time interfaces, including state management and performance tuning.
  • REST API design, versioning, and integration with third-party APIs.
  • MongoDB data modeling, plus solid SQL.
  • LLM integration in production: tool calling, structured outputs, retrieval, and evaluation.
  • Event-driven and asynchronous processing (queues, workers, scheduled jobs).
  • Testing, CI/CD, and observability for services you own in production.
  • Cloud deployment on Azure or a comparable platform.

Nice to have: optimization, matching, or pricing systems; maps and geospatial interfaces (Mapbox, deck.gl); WebSockets and live data streams; agent frameworks and MCP; logistics, manufacturing, or IoT domain experience.

Who You Are

  • 4+ years building production software, with meaningful ownership across backend or full-stack systems.
  • You've shipped products where reliability mattered to real operations or real money.
  • You care about both the architecture and the person using what you build.
  • You can take an ambiguous problem, make sound technical decisions, and ship.
  • You enjoy working directly with a small team across engineering, sales, and operations.

Why Oway

Every application you ship proves what a common language for industry can do. A better agent workflow lets a company automate decisions it used to make by phone. A better console lets an operator trust autonomous work. Your code runs against real fleets, warehouses, and enterprise operations from your first week.

Benefits

On top of our compensation listed, this full-time position includes health, dental, and vision benefits.

Interview Process

About the Interview

We move fast and design each step to show off what you're best at.

  1. Meet Phillip, Oway's founder.
  2. Meet our engineering leads, usually one call with one or two people.
  3. A technical evaluation, with details shared after step two.

We may add a step if it helps us see your strengths more clearly.

Oway was built by unconventional thinkers. We value diverse backgrounds, independent judgment, and creative problem-solving. If this mission excites you and you've built things you're proud of, apply even if you don't check every box.

About Oway

Oway is a rideshare freight platform that uses AI to automatically coordinate and sell unused space in trucks to businesses at up to a 50% discount compared to traditional LTL freight shipping. It's a $100B problem in the US alone, with every year up to 50% of all the truck space in the country going empty or unused despite massive supply chain shortages. The American logistics industry is extremely fragmented with little automated coordination between carriers.
