Applied Physics | Data Science internship: particle contamination analysis

Job Description

Introduction

The Control and Measurement Engineering team in Veldhoven focuses on monitoring and understanding contamination in ASML cleanrooms. You will support efforts to improve how particle behavior is measured and controlled during machine assembly. This internship addresses a key challenge: understanding how airborne particles and particle fallout relate to surface cleanliness. Your work will help improve clean manufacturing conditions and system performance. You will gain hands-on experience in a high-tech environment while combining data analysis with physical insight.

Your assignment

In this internship, you will investigate how different particle measurements relate under varying production conditions. You will work with existing datasets and collaborate with engineers to translate insights into practical improvements. You will directly contribute to improving clean manufacturing processes through data-driven recommendations. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Analyze datasets on airborne particles, particle fallout, and surface contamination

  • Identify correlations between different contamination measurement methods

  • Investigate influencing factors such as environment, process conditions, and locations

  • Conduct interviews with engineers and specialists to gather insights

  • Perform a literature study on cleanroom standards and particle behavior

  • Design and execute a structured measurement plan

  • Present findings and translate results into practical recommendations

This is a bachelor’s or master’s (thesis) internship for a minimum of 5 months, with a minimum of 32 hours per week (3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is projected at the end of August 2026.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in data science, applied physics, industrial engineering, or a related field

  • Have strong analytical skills and experience working with data

  • Can structure complex information and draw clear conclusions

  • Work independently while collaborating effectively in a technical team, and ideally have an affinity with physics or particle behavior

  • Communicate clearly in English (C1), both written and verbal

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
